Chapter 46: 46. A Promise Is Made
Several minutes later, inside a certain restaurant...
The waiter looked nervously at the man and woman seated at the table. Piled high on the table was a towering stack of empty plates, and yet they kept calling for more food.
Since the man was in a Navy uniform, the restaurant owner, while worried they might eat themselves to death, urged the kitchen to keep bringing out dishes.
Watching the young girl in front of him, who was busily stuffing her mouth with food, occasionally looking up to glare at him, Marsh couldn't help but smile a little.
Considering Ohara had been completely erased by the Buster Call, Marsh understood why Robin despised the Navy so much.
Even though he had just saved her, her gaze was still full of hostility.
But remembering the message he had just received from the system:
[Host successfully rescues Nico Robin. Due to her high World Correction Value, host is awarded 10,000 virtue points.]
Ten thousand points!
That's enough for a tenfold draw!
And thinking of how Robin would grow into a knowledgeable and graceful beauty, Marsh wasn't about to get upset over a few glares.
After another half hour, Robin, half-reclining in her chair with a full stomach, looked at the young Navy officer in front of her, who was grinning slyly.
"I'm full. You can arrest me now."
"Hm?" Marsh raised an eyebrow. "Why would I arrest you?"
"You already know I'm the Devil Ch-" Robin started to say, rolling her eyes, but he interrupted her.
"You're a civilian! Understand? A civilian!" Marsh said firmly, looking her in the eye.
"Why?" Seeing that he didn't appear to be lying, Robin asked, confused.
"Who am I?" Marsh responded with a question of his own.
"Um… a Navy officer?" The question caught her off guard, but she answered on instinct.
"Correct, I'm with the Navy," Marsh nodded. "And what is the Navy?"
Robin didn't answer.
To her, the Navy was synonymous with executioners, butchers, and killers.
"I don't know what you've been through, and I don't care what you've experienced. Perhaps because of a few bad apples in the Navy, you and even your friends and family suffered."
"But please believe that not all Navy officers are like that."
Marsh sighed and continued, "The word Justice on my back might seem laughable to you, but I firmly believe the Navy exists to uphold justice!"
"In my view, you're a civilian girl who's been trafficked. So, why would I arrest you?"
Robin looked up at him in disbelief. The cheerful young officer's image slowly overlapped with that of her good friend, Jaguar D. Saul, and tears silently streamed down her cheeks.
If Marsh had known her thoughts, he probably would've slammed the table and shouted, "I'm this handsome! How do I look like that big red-haired gorilla?!"
But seeing the young girl sobbing at the table, Marsh reached out and gently patted her head.
…
An hour later, at another dock.
Robin stood on a small boat, her gaze hesitant as she looked at Marsh on the shore.
Seeing this, Marsh smiled and said, "Don't worry. We'll meet again someday!"
"Okay!" Robin nodded, her eyes brimming with tears.
"Sigh..." Marsh jumped onto the boat, squatted down to meet her eyes, and said, "Remember what I told you. Whatever you want to become even if it's a pirate stick to what you believe in!"
"But… but why do I have to go to Alabasta? It's so far! I'm afraid that if I go, I might never see you again!"
Unable to hold back any longer, Robin dropped her oar and clung to Marsh, crying.
After so much hardship, she'd thought she'd finally found someone to rely on, only to face separation again.
Marsh gave a wry smile, if she didn't go to Alabasta, how would she eventually meet Crocodile?
And without that, how would she ever meet Luffy?
But, of course, he couldn't tell her any of that.
"Don't you want to become an archaeologist? There's something of interest to you in Alabasta." Marsh said gently, patting her head.
Robin looked up at him with wide eyes. "So you do know who I am!"
"Uh…" Marsh scratched the back of his head awkwardly. Oops, he'd let it slip.
"But that doesn't matter now. Promise me! When I grow up, you'll come find me!" Robin held his hand tightly, as if she wouldn't let go until he agreed.
"Alright. I promise you, when you've grown up, no matter where you are, I'll come find you." Marsh replied warmly, linking his pinky with hers. "It's a promise!"
"Okay!"
Back on shore, Marsh watched Robin rowing away, putting all her strength into the oars, and let out a long sigh.
Now, it was time to head to training camp!
