Chapter 824: CH204 (818), Tenacious Dragon(s)

I was not too surprised to see Kingdra throw off enough of the oppression caused by Ryujin/Gyarados' ability and talent combination to attempt a second Rain Dance. Sadly for them, that attempt fell through due to the Torment that Ryujin followed up with before starting a dance of his own. "Yawn," we heard Ryujin order a few moments into my Ryujin's Dragon Dance, and since Ryujin had no sound-based moves that could counter Kingdra's Yawn, I went another route to prevent my water dragon from being lulled to sleep.

"Outrage," I ordered to make use of the adrenaline and aggression boost Outrage induced to get rid of the sleepiness that Yawn caused. 'Close in and try to wrap Kingdra up if you can,' I added telepathically as Ryujin's movement went from controlled dance-like to wild and unrestrained while he rushed toward Kingdra. Kingdra remained calm as my giant Gyarados came closer, and as soon as Ryujin said "Rain", it began to initiate a Rain Dance. My Ryujin could not interfere since he was still in his Outrage rush toward Kingdra, and the rain began to fall mere moments before Ryujin reached Kingdra.

Still, Swift Swim or not, there was no way for Kingdra to dodge Ryujin at this distance. "Whirpool," Ryujin commanded at the same time as my Ryujin in his Outrage mode slammed head-first into Kingdra, forcing him back a bit. Kingdra began to create a Whirlpool at incredible speed, though the forming Whirlpool did not stop the draconic-energy-clad tail that headed for Kingdra as Ryujin twirled to slap it. Admittedly, it was impressive that Kingdra was able to continue the Whirlpool even as Ryujin's tail smacked it and sent it sliding. Yet, Kingdra managed to do so, so the Whirlpool kept rapidly getting bigger and bigger, even as Ryujin rushed after Kingdra.

Within just a few seconds the Whirlpool had grown to a diameter of ten meters, forcing Ryujin to enter the water as he tried to rush Kingdra, slowing him down enormously as he tried to move against the current; The Whirlpool in the meantime continued to grow. Well, at least that was what Ryujin did before I told him to simply let go and ride the current, taking advantage of the Whirlpool until it brought him closer to Kingdra's side before breaking out of the current.

"Deep Sea," Ryujin ordered as soon as my Ryujin let himself get carried by the current. Kingdra stopped expanding the Whirlpool when she said that, and jumped into the Whirlpool that had by now grown to cover more than a third of the battlefield and attained a height of more than 10 meters. I was happy that the trainer areas were secured by psychic shields, because as soon as Kingdra let go of the Whirlpool to jump into it, the water began to spread out to the rest of the battlefield due to its momentum, and it still spun around for the same reason.

The rain helped the Whirlpool temporarily turn the battlefield into a water field, though that did not affect Ryujin much. The fact that the water was turning black starting from the point Kingdra jumped in was much more worrisome. Kingdra were known to live in the deep sea and hang out in/around whirlpools, so it was perfectly fine fighting like this. Ryujin, on the other hand, would have a much harder time fighting if he had to handle the current and total darkness, though it would mostly be the lack of sight that would put him at a disadvantage.

Hence, it was my responsibility to step in since I could still follow Kingdra even though I couldn't see him anymore. I was able to feel his position through his life signal and passed his position to Ryujin. Ryujin saw my Ryujin plunge into the black area where Kingdra was and smiled, unaware that her dragon was not at as much of an advantage as she was thinking, though that did not stop her from making her next move.

"Take it down," she ordered, handing the reins to her Kingdra since the current situation left her unable to see anything as well. There was a cyan-blue light, that was probably from a Dragon Pulse, coming from where I could feel Kingdra heading in the direction I knew Ryujin was swimming towards Kingdra. By now, Outrage had run out, so Ryujin could block the Dragon Pulse with one of his own since his mastery over Outrage meant that he did not have to deal with any post-Outrage confusion. Still, after briefly considering the distance I could feel between the two, I made a different choice.

'Dragon Rush. Push through and punt that overgrown seahorse right out of the water,' I ordered, relying on Ryujin's boosted strength and Dragon Rush's higher power. Following that command, everyone was able to see a purplish-blue light appear in the black water and rush right into the cyan-blue light before it began pushing through it. Ryujin managed to break through the Dragon Pulse, and even though Kingdra broke off its attack to try to dodge him, it reacted too late. I felt the two life signs collide, showing that Ryujin's Dragon Rush hit, but unlike what I was hoping, no Kingdra flew out of the water.

There were a lot of ripples and a water spout, but no Kingdra, which indicated that Dragon Rush had probably lost too much steam to break through the Dragon Pulse. I kept Ryujin up to date and he rushed straight back after Kingdra, and the two began to exchange moves/attacks. All everyone else was seeing were ripples in the water as they moved about, along with the occasional water spouts and light when they or their moves clashed. I kept an eye on the water, or more specifically the water levels even while I assisted Ryujin, and from what I could see, it would take another 5 minutes for the water level to fall below 1.5 meters if the rain did not stop before that.

At that point, the water would be shallow enough to reveal Ryujin and Kingdra even in the black water, though I was not sure if Ryujin would be willing to wait that long since I was pretty sure that she must have noticed by now that things were not going like she had wanted. Honestly, normally their black water strategy would have been a good idea, but it worked against them in this case since she was unable to steer the battle while we could still work together thanks to my particular set of skills. That was not even the worst of it as far as their plan went.

What she could not know was that my Ryujin was getting progressively better at fighting blind thanks to the effect of Alpha Predator to the extent that he needed to rely less and less on my guidance. If Ryujin truly waited until the water levels lowered, her Kingdra was likely going to suffer quite a bit, especially after I telepathically urged Ryujin to go all out without considering anything else outside of taking that Kingdra down. Once I said that the churning of the water became more intense because Ryujin started to adopt a near-desperate fighting style where he tanked attacks, tolerating getting hurt as long as he could hurt Kingdra even more in exchange.

It was a give up 800 soldiers to take down 1000 kind of approach that I would usually not allow him to take, but considering that he was facing a Stage 6 Kingdra, he would already have done a brilliant job taking it down, so there was no need to try to balance things just for him to face Ryujin's next Pokemon/dragon. There was simply no need for him to soften that one up for Osiris/Skellibra. In fact, I was pretty sure that Osiris would appreciate it more if he got to face a fresh opponent. Anyway, as I had expected Ryujin chose to act long before the water level fell.

"King, surface," she ordered roughly two minutes later, and her Kingdra burst out of the water with my Ryujin hot on his tail. There were gasps and exclamations of surprise/disbelief after the two dragons surfaced due to the state they were in. Due to Ryujin's brutal/reckless fighting, both dragons were full of wounds and everyone could see blood flowing out of those before it got washed away by water or flung off through their movements, though fresh blood quickly spilled out again.

I saw Ryujin openly frown at the state of her Kingdra, and even I couldn't help but furrow my brows a bit after seeing Ryujin's current state even though I had expected them to look like since I knew what had been happening down below. I was sure she would have tried to use the black water to vanish so that Kingdra could heal using Rest if it had not become obvious that we could find her Kingdra even if we shouldn't be able to see it, and Kingdra couldn't learn any other recovery moves if I did not remember it wrong.

Either way, as things stood risking a move like Rest was not an option, so I was not surprised when her next order was for Kingdra to freeze the water between it and my Ryujin before opening up some distance relying on its speed. She then had her Kingdra snipe at Ryujin from a distance while maintaining the distance between them as much as possible. Their evasive strategy forced us/Ryujin to retaliate using long-range moves as well since Kingdra kept retreating whenever Ryujin tried to close in on him. As it usually happened to be with long-range exchanges, a lot of the attacks from each side ended up getting blocked by the opponent or outright dodged with only a small number successfully hitting home, though it was hard to miss that Kingdra had the advantage during their long-range battle.

Unfortunately, Ryujin and her Kingdra forced the issue and maintained the exchange for nearly 5 minutes before we were finally able to shatter the forced balance and cause a direct confrontation. Our chance came when the rain began to let up. Knowing that Kingdra would lose its speed advantage once the rain was gone, Ryujin tried to let it initiate another Rain Dance, but we had no plans to let that happen, so my Ryujin went all out to interrupt Kingdra before using Torment to stop it from spamming the move.

We kept up the pressure and once the rain had stopped, Ryujin began to close in on Kingdra while still pressuring Kingdra to prevent it from starting a new round of rain. In fact, we surprised the other side by setting up a Sunny Day just to force them to successfully use Rain Dace twice before they could reactivate Swift Swim. Predictably, we gave them no time to do so, and after a nearly minute-and-a-half-long chase, Ryujin managed to Dragon Rush Kingdra.

Once we managed to close in, Ryujin clung to Kingdra like chewd gum stuck to a shoe, and it didn't take long for the other site to realize that at this point they could no longer afford to insist on trying to open up the distance between them. The moment that realization took place, the battle turned into a full-blown melee/brawl with Kingdra sneaking in the occasional energy beam. Ryujin fought like possessed and I could feel that his namesake was begrudgingly impressed with him since everyone could see that he was wearing Kingdra down, though it was equally clear that he was getting worn down in exchange.

It ultimately came down to whether Kingdra's higher stage would allow it to outlast Ryujin or not, and my draconic Gyarados stubbornly clung to his consciousness to the point that he began to continue fighting almost entirely relying on his instincts, which were near impeccable thanks to Alpha Predator. Both sides showed impressive endurance, refusing to fall down despite the state they were in, which I was sure was no longer minor friendly with all the wounds and blood.

It was only about 5 minutes later that one side finally caved, and it was thanks to stubbornness and Alpha Predator that it was Kingdra who fell first, though the referee had scarcely begun declaring Kingdra unable to battle before Ryujin, having achieved his goal, fell over as well.
