Chapter 10: Battles [1]
…(1 month later)
Barry watched the others who were in the hall with him. This was a room specially designed for them when they finally graduated from professor Oak's classes. The Indigo League was starting up and everyone was more than ready for the trials that presented itself.
Surprisingly, all of them had graduated. Including Ash… Professor Oak had informed them several times that they shouldn't be surprised when they would be called out of their comfort zones to do some research on unknown islands for him.
Now, what awaited them wasn't much, the pressure on them was also non-existent. There was no way anyone would fail the exams as it was basically based more on the fact that the youths had challenged each other to a Pokémon battle as soon as they were done.
Professor Oak was the referee of the matches that would take place and made sure to assess the matches that were going to take place. All the Pokémon were still in their pre-evolved form so there wouldn't be any one-sided beat down…
1st Match Blue VS Clinton
2nd Match Red VS Gary
3rd Match Leaf VS Ash
Since they were 7 professor Oak decided to postpone the match Barry would have to the 2nd matches. He was lucky to be seeded…
1st Match Begin!
"Blue and Clinton you may begin your match." The professor called out.
The other youths stood and watched the match that would take place on the grassy terrain in a secluded part of route 1.
"Squirtle!"
"Eevee!"
They both called out their Pokémon's name as they sent it out of the Pokéballs.
"Squirtle, start up with bubble!" Blue commanded as soon as the match started.
"Eevee, use quick attack to close in the distance!" Clinton commanded.
Squirtle launched a large amount of bubbles from its mouth and surprisingly, the bubble instead of going forward acted like a kind of shield as it formed a kind of armor around the water-type.
Eevee glowed with normal type energy as it propelled itself towards the Squirtle and closed the distance between the Pokémon.
"Eevee now bite!"
"Squirtle use withdraw!"
Squirtle retracted its body into its shell as the fangs of Eevee latched onto the shell.
Clinton seeing the uselessness of the attack decided to gain a bit of distance.
"Eevee throw the shell away and prepare for a quick attack as soon as it comes out." Clinton commanded.
He seemed to be losing the battle from the display being showed, however he wasn't going to allow himself be fazed.
As soon as Eevee threw the shell Blue calmly commanded:
"Squirtle use your withdraw attack!"
Withdraw was a defensive move that allowed the Pokémon to retreat into its shell to hide from attacks. It was not called an attack for a reason.
Almost immediately his Squirtle hit a tree and propelled itself back for Eevee. The attack caught Clinton off guard and he had no chance to react as Squirtle quickly hit the Eevee within the confines of its shell.
"Blue is using the momentum of Eevees throw to turn the defensive move into an attack…" Barry said to himself.
The attack hit Eevee squarely in the chest as it was propelled backwards.
"Follow up with tackle!" Blue expertly commanded.
The Squirtle looked like it lived up to its evolution's name as it pursued after the Eevee. Squirtle rammed into Eevee again propelling it backwards.
"Now Water Gun!" Blue said certain that it would finish the rare normal type Pokémon.
Eevee hit a surrounding tree before an attack from Squirtle: an expertly aimed water gun, crashed into it inflicting damage unto it.
Eevee didn't get up after that, it was utterly defeated. Blue had not only shown his use of tactics, but he also showed his efficiency by finishing the battle in 2 minutes.
And this Eevee was one that was supposed to have been trained under Professor Oak's supervision! It seemed as if this boy was going to work under prof. Oak for a very, very long time.
"This match has ended with Blue's win. The next battle between Red and Gary will commence as soon as Blue and Clinton are off the field!" Professor Oak did the work of a referee better than what an actual referee would.
He seemed to have a little experience in that field.
Blue and Clinton walked off the field to be replaced by Red and Gary. The both of them excited about their first Pokémon battle, the look in Red's eyes gave away that he was confident in beating the bratty grandson of Professor Oak.
Gary seemed to be more confident in his ability to win than to pay any more attention to anyone who wasn't him. He was aware of Red's typing so expected a very quick victory against his opponent.
The fact that Red had a Charmander was deep in Gary's mind that it seemed to be like he thought he could imitate his cousin's strategy.
"Begin!"
"Charmander, let's go!" Red shouted as he threw a Pokéball into the sky. The lizard Pokémon burst out, its tail emanating with flames.
"Squirtle."
"Charmander start up with ember!" Red commanded quickly.
"Squirtle, get in close and use bite!" Gary followed.
Charmander opened its mouth before unleashing small embers, but instead of aiming for Squirtle it was aimed for the ground around Charmander.
Squirtle stopped in its tracks as soon as it reached the mini-fire spin that surrounded Charmander.
"Charmander, advance forward!" Red ordered.
Regardless of the fact that Squirtle was a water Pokémon it would still be affected by the fire. Gary decided it would be best to avoid any damage.
"Use water gun to clear out the water." Gary said calmly.
Squirtle gathered energy and released it, using water gun to clear out the wild fire that CHarmander started. But, Charmander was already there and before Squirtle had the chance to change targets Charmander had launched a scratch attack.
The attack landed on Squirtle face and left a mark there.
"Charmander, follow up with bite!" Red commanded.
Charmander bared its teeth for a split-second, gathering dark-type energy before unleashing it by latching on to Squirtle's face.
This Charmander seemed to have a problem with Squirtle as it forced its teeth deeper into Squirtle.
It was up to Gary if he wanted Squirtle to continue suffering or if he would give up now.
"Squirtle, use bubble, try to gain some distance from Charmander!" Desperation was laced into Gary's voice, he was anxious and scared of losing his first Pokémon battle.
Squirtle managed to gather some energy and released a bubble towards Red's Charmander. The bubble managed to stun the Charmander momentarily, using this opportunity Squirtle struggled out of Charmader's teeth and created some distance between the two Pokémon.
Red looked calm as though he expected this turn of events to happen: "Charmander, now flamethrower!"
A move that was known mostly to Charmeleons nearing their evolution into a Charizard.
"Squirtle, use withdraw!" Ordering the Pokémon to use the defensive move than try to dodge the flamethrower.
Afterall, Charmander could move its mouth faster than Squirtle could run so it would be a pointless effort.
Squirtle retreated into the confines of its shell as the flamethrower hit. It seemed like Squirtle's shell was being roasted because the shell turned from the usual brown to slightly more red.
As soon as Squirtle felt that the continuous wave of fire was over it came out of its shell.
Gary recognizing that there was a chance that Squirtle could faint from the large amount of heat Gary decided to douse he Pokémon in water.
"Shoot water gun upwards on yourself!" Gary commanded urgently.
Squirtle shot the torrent of water into the sky and it went down and was doused with its own water.
Surprisingly, as soon as that happened Squirtle's body seemed to harden and it seemed to find it harder to move!
"Charmander finish it off with your metal claw attack!" Charmander rushed towards the Squirtle with claws radiating steel type energy as it claws turned to a more silver color.
With a sense of finality in its moves it attacked Squirtle with a final strike on its body. Ignoring its former bullseye.
With that last move Squirtle fell to the ground with swirls indicating its blatant defeat. It was surprisingly how Squirtle lost to Charmander despite their typings.
"The match is over with Red and Charmander as the winners!" Prof. Oak declared.
