As the battle continued, Alakazam launched another Psychic attack. The move struck Kirlia, lifting it into the air.
However, Kirlia resisted with its own psychic power, breaking free from the grip after a brief struggle.
"Kirlia, use Magical Leaf!" Kai commanded.
The shimmering green leaves shot toward Alakazam, but as before, it deftly avoided the attack by teleporting.
This time, however, Kai was prepared. With a silent command, Kirlia, understanding his intent, unleashed a Psychic attack the moment Alakazam reappeared.
Caught off guard, Alakazam faltered. Though it managed to shake off the attack, the damage was evident.
The battle was evenly matched so far.
Sabrina observed calmly, "Even without psychic abilities, you can communicate with your Pokémon effectively. That's impressive. It seems your Kirlia is well-trained."
"You and your Alakazam are formidable!" Kai responded sincerely. "In terms of sheer psychic strength, my Kirlia doesn't measure up."
A faint smile touched Sabrina's lips, though her expression remained stoic.
Being praised by another trainer wasn't something she often encountered, but she didn't allow it to affect her focus. Her next move came with no mercy.
Alakazam's eyes glowed red, unleashing a pulse of Psychic energy a Dazzling Gleam. The attack rippled toward Kirlia, with a chance to confuse it.
"Kirlia, use Teleport!" Kai called out.
Kirlia vanished, narrowly avoiding the attack. Kai's mind raced.
Psychic moves alone wouldn't determine the outcome of this battle. He needed a strategy.
After a brief pause, inspiration struck. "Kirlia, use Psychic!" he shouted.
Sabrina's voice carried a note of scepticism. "Are you sure about that? You admitted yourself that Kirlia's psychic strength is no match for Alakazam."
She communicated telepathically with her Pokémon, commanding it to counter with Psychic as well.
But as Alakazam concentrated its power, the incoming attack wasn't Psychic it was another Magical Leaf!
"What?" Sabrina's composure broke slightly.
Even Alakazam faltered, surprised by the switch. The enchanted leaves clashed with its Psychic barrier, breaking through and striking it.
Being neutral to Grass-type moves, the damage left Alakazam visibly shaken.
Feeling surprised, Kai exclaimed, "Kirlia, why didn't you follow my command?"
Sabrina narrowed her eyes, clearly unimpressed. "You tricked us."
Kai coughed, hiding a grin. "Tactical deception. That's what I call it."
Sabrina's expression remained neutral, but she silently vowed not to fall for such tactics again.
She commanded Alakazam to use Recover. A golden glow enveloped the Pokémon as its wounds began to heal.
"Kirlia, don't let it finish! Use Psychic!" Kai ordered.
"Ki-irlll-ia"
Kirlia raised its arms, sending another wave of psychic energy toward Alakazam.
The attack interrupted the healing process, knocking the spoon from its hand.
Kai seized the opportunity. "Now! Use Magical Leaf!"
The spinning leaves formed a small cyclone, bombarding Alakazam. Without its spoon, teleportation was delayed, leaving it vulnerable. The attack ended with Alakazam kneeling, visibly weakened.
"Finish it! Use Disarming Voice!" Kai called.
Kirlia unleashed a melodious cry, sending pink soundwaves toward Alakazam.
The Fairy-type attack struck true, and Alakazam wavered before collapsing, unable to continue.
Sabrina's father raised his hand. "Alakazam is unable to battle. Kirlia is the winner!"
Sabrina recalled her Pokémon and approached Kai. Despite the loss, her face remained impassive as she handed him a badge. "You've earned this."
The badge floated into Kai's hand, a Golden Badge shaped like a radiant, circular emblem.
Kai placed it in his badge case, beaming. "Four badges down. Just four more to go until the Indigo League!"
With a parting wave, Kai left the gym, heading to the Pokémon Center to heal his team.
However, on the way, a spark caught his attention. Looking up, he noticed smoke and flashes of light emanating from the tenth floor of a skyscraper nearby.
"Is that... the Silph Tower?" he murmured, reading the building's name. A sense of unease crept in as he realized something unusual was happening there.
