Chapter 114: Bullying
Passing through the dense wall of mist, John and Daisy landed in the Dragon's Nest, a secluded Island. The air vibrated faintly with the energy of countless dragon-type Pokemon, and the distant roar of waves crashing against jagged rocks added a symphonic intensity to the atmosphere.
John squinted, scanning the rocky expanse for the Shiny Axew he had spotted during his last visit. Back then, the tiny dragon had perched near the coastline. Surely its lair wouldn't be far. Yet as he searched, unease crept over him. The terrain looked alien now, reshaped by time and tides.
Daisy released a sigh that sounded suspiciously like impatience. "Goodra, we're counting on you," she said, releasing her Pokemon in a flash of silver light.
Goodra emerged with an enthusiastic "Good!"—a slimy yet oddly adorable dragon radiating charm. It turned to Daisy, eyes filled with unwavering trust, awaiting its instructions.
"Take us to the Haxorus clan," Daisy commanded, her tone steady and assured.
John couldn't suppress a pang of envy as Goodra began to lead the way, confidently navigating the rugged path. A pseudo-legendary guide? That explained why Daisy always seemed three steps ahead.
Daisy caught his expression and smirked. "What's the matter? Surprised? I wasn't going to wander the Dragon's Nest blind. Goodra knows this place inside and out—she grew up here. Without her, we'd be chasing our tails."
John glanced down at the Pokeball containing Gabite on his belt. Regret washed over him. He hadn't even considered asking his own dragon for help. "Waste of potential," he muttered under his breath.
The rocky coastline soon gave way to uneven terrain. The Dragon's Nest was as much a social construct as a physical one—a hierarchy etched into its geography. The mightiest dragons held territory at the heart of the island: clans of Goodra, Dragonite, and Garchomp, each led by a Dragon King. The Haxorus clan, while formidable, claimed land closer to the perimeter, unable to rival the dominance of the pseudo-legendaries.
After a brisk hike, they reached the Haxorus territory. A massive cave loomed ahead, its dark entrance flanked by smaller crevices. Axew and Fraxure darted between them, their movements quick and purposeful. Deeper within the shadows, several Haxorus lounged, their powerful forms partially hidden but undeniably intimidating.
John's eyes caught a glimmer of light. There it was—the Shiny Axew. Its shimmering scales gleamed faintly as it nestled beside its mother, exuding an aura of rare beauty.
He took a step forward, but the cavern's atmosphere shifted instantly. Every Haxorus snapped to attention, their piercing gazes locking onto him. Muscles coiled, they stood ready, though they refrained from attacking outright. The fragile truce between humans and dragons held firm, but tension crackled like static.
John froze. "Uh… so, what's the plan?" he asked, throwing Daisy a nervous glance.
Daisy's smirk widened. "Goodra will negotiate. If Axew's mother agrees, you're golden. If not… well, better luck next time."
John swallowed hard. "Fantastic."
Daisy crouched beside Goodra, murmuring softly. The dragon nodded and waddled toward the towering Haxorus, exuding calm authority. Though the two species were distinct, their shared dragon heritage created a bridge of mutual respect. Goodra rumbled softly, gesturing with her stubby arms in what appeared to be a dragon-style negotiation.
After a tense exchange, Goodra returned, and the Shiny Axew's mother stepped forward. She extended her claws toward John, her expression fierce but composed.
"This is…?" John began, trailing off.
"A challenge," Daisy explained, her grin mischievous. "If you want her child, you'll have to prove you're strong enough to protect it. Beat her in battle, and she'll let you take Axew. Lose, and you're out of luck."
John sighed, equal parts relieved and anxious. At least he had a chance. He stepped forward, gripping a Pokeball with steady determination. The metallic weight in his hand was oddly reassuring.
"Alright," he said, voice firm. "Let's do this."
The Pokeball burst open, releasing Gardevoir. Her elegant form shimmered in the dim light, her flowing gown and piercing gaze radiating serene confidence. The air around her seemed to hum with latent energy.
"Gardevoir, we're up. Let's show them what we've got."
Haxorus wasted no time. With a guttural roar, she charged, her claws glowing green as she unleashed Dragon Claw.
"Dazzling Gleam!" John shouted.
Gardevoir brought her hands to her chest, forming a sphere of pink light before hurling it forward. The energy exploded midair, illuminating the cavern in a dazzling burst of Fairy-type power. Haxorus staggered but quickly shook it off, her eyes burning with renewed fury.
"Watch out!" Daisy called as Haxorus roared again, her body now engulfed in crackling green flames. She had entered Outrage, her berserk power doubling as she charged.
John remained calm. "Moonblast," he ordered.
Gardevoir raised her hands skyward, summoning an ethereal orb of silvery energy. It descended like a comet, striking Haxorus head-on and halting her advance. Even so, the dragon refused to fall, her bloodied scales glinting as she prepared for another attack.
"Finish it!" John commanded, his confidence surging. "Another Moonblast!"
Gardevoir unleashed a barrage of glowing spheres, each one raining down with celestial precision. Haxorus roared defiantly, but the relentless assault was too much. She collapsed to one knee, her fiery rage extinguished.
The battle was over.
