Chapter 155: Peaceful Night
The conversation around the campfire slowly progressed at a leisurely pace, flowing without tension or awkwardness.
El and Kayo were still debating the same thing, like a pair of old friends who never ran out of topics.
However, in between the debates, El quietly observed the atmosphere among his Adjuvant members. Everyone seemed more relaxed, much different from the previous tense atmosphere.
In another corner, Enju and Yuzuki were busy teasing Midori. With the typical curiosity of children, they tried to pull Midori's pants, wanting to confirm if she had a tail, given her clearly visible cat ears.
Midori, of course, tried to resist with a bright red face, strongly protesting their actions.
Not far from them, Tamaki and Shoma were engaged in a serious discussion. The two were discussing their respective fighting styles, which happened to both rely on boxing.
Although Tamaki uses a chainsaw kenucle as a tool, while Shoma focuses more on pure strength, the two find similarities that make their discussion even more interesting.
Meanwhile, on the far side of the camp, Kisara was seen scolding Satomi in a sharp tone.
Although their conversation was not very loud, it was quite clear that they were discussing the incident in the hall earlier.
Perhaps Satomi had gotten into an argument with Gadou Nagamasa, given her tendency to be vocal and assertive in voicing her opinions.
El watched them briefly before refocusing on the debate with Kayo. Hr knew Satomi was the main character of this world, a figure who was involved in a major conflict to develop himself.
Unlike El, who was just a survivor from another world, such debates and conflicts were not something that caught his attention.
After all, El did not know what exactly was the topic of debate between Satomi and Gadou.
El had escaped from the hall early, and although curiosity had crossed her mind, she quickly dismissed it. To her, such things were just small details that she didn't need to care about.
In the midst of a heated argument with Kayo, El suddenly caught a familiar scent that she could hardly recognize. The scent was sweet and warm, giving rise to a slight sense of dejavu that made her pause for a moment.
That memory brought his back to the moment when Kirai spoke to her, giving off a similar scent. However, that scent, though warm, felt hollow, unable to fill the deep emptiness in El's heart.
"This scent..." he muttered softly, his eyes now fixed on the place where Satomi and Kisara were. "Just like the scent Kirai once gave off."
"Huh? What did you say?" Kayo asked in an annoyed tone, feeling ignored in the middle of an argument.
However, Kayo immediately noticed the direction of El's gaze, curious about what she was seeing.
Their gaze fell on Satomi and Kisara who were a little away from the campfire circle. The two couples looked at each other with meaningful gazes.
Kisara, with cheeks as red as ripe tomatoes, looked a little nervous but happy, while Satomi looked awkward, but tried to maintain her composure.
Slowly but surely, they brought their faces closer to each other, the atmosphere between them feeling so intimate.
Not far from them, Enju, who had been watching since the beginning, showed an exasperated expression. Her eyes were full of dislike, especially when she saw Satomi so close to Kisara.
Tina, who was sitting next to Enju, looked no less upset. Without saying much, the two girls got up from their seats and walked over to the couple.
Meanwhile, the rest of the Adjuvant, despite noticing the romantic atmosphere, chose to stay where they were. They seemed to want to watch what would happen next, but with no intention of interfering.
Only El and Kayo seemed indifferent, showing no interest in the little drama.
As Satomi and Kisara's lips drew closer, Enju and Tina suddenly stopped right in front of them.
In a stern tone, they cleared their throats loudly, their voices echoing in the quiet night. "Akhem!"
The sound of their clearing their throats broke the romantic moment, making Satomi and Kisara immediately move their faces away while blushing.
The once sweet atmosphere turned awkward, especially with the displeased gazes of Enju and Tina who looked like two strict supervisors.
When Enju and Tina's deafening voice echoed, the atmosphere between Satomi and Kisara instantly changed.
Kisara's face, which had previously only been flushed, now looked like a ripe tomato, while Satomi immediately stiffened like a statue. The two of them pushed their faces away from each other in a hurried motion.
"Ah, it's... it's not what you think!" Satomi tried to make excuses while scratching the back of her head awkwardly.
However, Kisara gaze shifted everywhere, avoiding Enju and Tina's gaze.
Enju, with her arms folded in front of her chest, looked at Satomi with a narrowed gaze. "Rentaro, so you'd rather spend time with Kisara than me, huh?" she said in a sarcastic tone.
Tina, who was usually calmer, let out a short breath and looked at Satomi coldly. "Oni-san, I thought you were focused on the mission, not on... this," she said while glancing at Kisara with a flat look, making the girl sink even deeper into her embarrassment.
Kisara tried to defend himself, though his voice trembled slightly. "I... I just wanted to tell you something important!" he said as he lowered his head, trying to avoid everyone's gaze.
In the distance, Shoma chuckled at the chaos. Shoma nudged Tamaki's shoulder. "Satomi really hasn't changed, huh? Always stuck in situations like this."
Tamaki, on the other hand, looked so angry and jealous. "What are you going to do to my Goddess!"
Meanwhile, Kayo was looking at El with some confusion. "Are they always like this?" she asked while pointing in the direction of the commotion.
El, who kept her eyes on the campfire in front of his, just shrugged. "It's just embarrassing monkey love," she replied coldly, without showing the slightest interest in what was happening.
Returning to Satomi, the situation became even more chaotic when Enju tugged at her collar with an annoyed expression. "Rentaro, I want your attention too! Don't just care about Kisara!
"Right," Tina added in a stern tone, while pulling Satomi's arm towards her.
"Hey! Let go of me! This is a misunderstanding!" Satomi yelled in panic, but that only made everyone laugh, including Midori, Yuzuki, and Tamaki.
This lighthearted chaos eventually broke the ice, bringing laughter that made the whole group forget the awkwardness and tension that had previously enveloped them.
...
Time flew by and the clock on Kisara's hand had already struck 00:00.
Tonight was a reminder that the deadline was approaching with only two days left before the monolith collapsed.
An invisible tension hung in the air, even though everyone was now asleep in their tents.
The slowly fading embers of the campfire left a faint red glow, as if whispering to the quiet night.
The sounds of the night are clearly audible; the chirping of insects and the breeze rustling the leaves create a silent harmony of nature.
The tents stood neatly in a circle, like small fortresses protecting their occupants from the darkness of the night.
Inside, Promoters and Initiators share the same space, keeping each other warm and safe.
El slept in a corner of the tent with Kayo, who was curled up small on the other side.
Kayo's face looked calm, though her breathing was a little heavy, while even though El was fast asleep, she still caught the scent of her surroundings.
Not far from them, Satomi and Enju shared the same space. Enju, in her sleep, hugged her little doll tightly, while Satomi lay on his back, his hands slightly protecting the sides of the tent.
In another tent, Kisara slept next to Tina. Tina's face remained cold even in sleep, while Kisara occasionally mumbled softly, perhaps dreaming.
Shoma was seen sleeping on his back, while Midori was curled up close to him, her cat ears twitching slightly, as if hearing the sounds of the night that even humans couldn't catch.
Meanwhile, Tamaki and Yuzuki were sleeping side by side. Tamaki looked asleep with her arms crossed over her chest, while Yuzuki lay in a very unusual sleeping position.
The night continued, letting the group enjoy a final rest before tomorrow brought new challenges.
Even in the stillness of the night, the tension of the approaching threat was still felt, but for now, everyone fell asleep in the protection of the night's silence.
