Chapter 7: Chapter 7: Takagi Mansion
Early the next day, the group, now consisting of only 12 members, crammed into Shizuka's friend's Hummer and headed towards the bridge, looking for another vehicle they could use.
Perhaps because of the zombie horde from last night, they ended up encountering several groups of zombies, the smallest with at least 10 and the largest with almost 50, forcing them to change direction more than once.
Without them realizing it, these groups of zombies were guided to an elevated position, giving them a clear view of what was happening on the bridge closest to Shizuka's friend's house. Since it was blocked, they had to redirect themselves to the Onbetsu Bridge. Which didn't look any better with the large number of people present there.
With his eyes glowing an imperceptible purple, Tsunoda proposed that they use the Hummer to pass through a specific point of the river, where it was shallower. Gaining the support of the group, they headed to the aforementioned point, which was close to where they had camped last night.
Arriving near the point where they were crossing the river, Shizuka braked abruptly, having seen Renji on the riverbank preparing to swim across.
Jumping out of the car, Rei ran towards her, with the others right behind. Seeing Rei hugging him made Takeshi furious, but given what had happened last night, he did something rare: he held back his impulse and simply said that they should be quick to cross the river.
Agreeing with her opinion, Renji first counted the number of people there and saw that it would be impossible for everyone to cross at once. He played it safe, putting only 4 people in at a time, excluding Shizuka, who was the group's driver.
Dividing the groups so that the first and last had the strongest fighters, they began the crossing. And luckily, during the entire journey there and back, there were no incidents. On the other side of the river, the group found a motorcycle shop, to their relief.
Having 13 people in the same car is complicated, to say the least especially when you have several teenagers of both genders in such a cramped environment.
After those who knew how to drive had chosen their motorcycles, Renji chose a red Kawasaki Ninja, Rei asked to go with him, with the excuse that it would be safer that way. Having no reason to refuse, he accepted, leaving Takeshi fuming with rage, which soon dissipated when Saeko asked him to take her on his motorcycle.
Advancing quickly along the path, they came across a fire engine on the other side of a wire blockade on the road, pushing the zombies away so that a truck could pass through the barrier.
Drawn by the noise the group made upon arrival, a large portion of the zombies headed their way. Seeing them approach, Renji ordered the group to use the rest of their ammo to thin out the zombie horde.
Despite the zombies being close together, many shots missed their heads. The only ones with a high success rate were Kohta, who'd trained in America, and Renji, who'd somehow absorbed the shooting skills of a dying cop who'd committed suicide with 37 stab wounds.
Thanks to this skill, Renji was only slightly behind Kohta, his body still adjusting to firearms. But with more practice, that gap would soon close.
Meanwhile, as they fired at the zombies, the group led by Saya's parents attacked from the other side, recognizing the school uniform their daughter wore or, rather, had worn.
When their ammo ran out, they resorted to hand-to-hand combat, with Shizuca and Saya's mom using their vehicles, a Hummer and a fire truck, to crush countless zombies.
With the small horde eliminated, Saya recognized her mom exiting the fire truck, ran to her, and jumped into her arms, crying. She only calmed down after a few minutes.
Invited by Saya's parents, the group followed them to the mansion as Saya's dad radioed for a cleanup crew. Leaving so many bodies on the road wasn't a good idea.
Having anticipated a scenario with many casualties, they'd used an excavator to dig a large pit for cremating the dead.
After things calmed down at the Takagi mansion, a meeting was held to decide the group's next steps. Saya's parents, who were the shelter's leaders, were present.
"Thank you so much for bringing our daughter home. But to be honest, what are your plans next?"
"Mr. Takagi, after discussing it, we decided to ask if we could use your mansion as a strategic base to rescue our families scattered around the city.
And honestly, you should do the same. The way things are going, the government will soon collapse, and we'll need many people to ensure our future.
Without anyone to maintain essential services, especially nuclear power plants, the world will go to hell in a handbasket. We need to ensure as many people survive as possible and that they obey us."
"You're right, but our top priority is reaching one of the power plants where the JSDF commander has stationed his troops. So unless something very serious happens, essential services won't be affected.
We'll leave in a few days, so if you're going to rescue your families, do it soon. We don't have the luxury of waiting too long."
"What you should do is send a representative with a few people. Honestly, as long as you stay calm, dealing with these zombies is pretty easy. Although they're strong, they're slow and dumb.
Put me in command of a tank platoon, and I'll clear out the city in a few days. So far, we've confirmed that zombies are attracted to sound, so dealing with them is easy. If we use motorcycles with sound systems, we can direct them wherever we want, making them easy targets.
So we don't need to act so quickly. The most dangerous period is now, and that's because of humans. Zombies are our least concern.
But I'm not going to try to change your mind. I believe the rescue won't take long, and honestly, living there or here is the same. However, if we're going there, it's a good idea to adapt our vehicles, especially those in the front.
