Chapter 83: Chapter 83: The Sun Moon Imperial Soul Engineering Academy
The sun blazed in a clear sky, its golden rays cascading down with scorching heat. Even the towering trees lining the roadside appeared to wilt slightly under the oppressive temperature.
"Brother Yan Xiao, we're still quite far from Mingdu, the capital of the Sun Moon Empire. We'll need to fly the rest of the way. This here is a Flying Soul Tool. By injecting soul power into it, you can take to the skies. Try it on." Ma Rulong flipped his palm, and a pair of black metallic wings appeared in his hand. He handed them over to Xiao Yan.
On the Douluo Continent, flying was a privilege reserved for those with flying-type martial souls or those who had reached the seven-ring stage and above. Even then, flight was usually brief, and sustained aerial travel required the strength of a Titled Douluo.
However, the advent of soul tool technology changed this. The Flying Soul Tool, though expensive, allowed low-level soul masters to soar through the skies. Its operation was straightforward: inject soul power to activate a jet-like propulsion system, which pushed the user off the ground. Once airborne, the wings would catch air currents, converting downward thrust into forward momentum for sustained flight.
Xiao Yan donned the flying soul tool and channeled his soul power. Immediately, the wings emitted twin streams of white light, lifting him steadily off the ground and into the sky.
In his mind, Tianmeng Iceworm's voice echoed. "Humans dominate the continent, not us soul beasts, because of their creativity. I've seen even more advanced soul tools back in the Star Dou Forest. Those things were terrifying—powerful enough to scare away even 100,000-year-old soul beasts."
Simultaneously, Yao Lao's voice joined in, tinged with curiosity. "This contraption reminds me of the Flying Techniques back on the Dou Qi Continent, though this lacks the flexibility of those techniques."
"Flying Techniques?" Xiao Yan muttered. "Teacher, what are those?"
Yao Lao explained, "As the name suggests, Flying Techniques allow one to soar through the sky. They're a mysterious art that extends two small energy meridians from the back, forming wings capable of flight."
"Teacher, do you know this technique?" Xiao Yan asked eagerly.
Yao Lao chuckled. "Nope."
Xiao Yan's excitement deflated. "Then why bring it up?"
"But I can teach you how to create one," Yao Lao continued lazily. "It's quite simple—capture a flying magical beast, or in this world, a flying soul beast, the stronger the better. Extract its wings using a secret method, and refine them into a teachable Flying Technique."
"That easy?" Xiao Yan's eyes brightened.
"Easy?" Yao Lao smirked. "You'd need at least a Dou Wang-level magical beast, or on this continent, a 100,000-year flying soul beast."
Xiao Yan's excitement dissipated. "Teacher, you're making it sound impossible."
"Fine, fine, you brat," Yao Lao grumbled. "When we have time, I'll accompany you to the Star Dou Forest to find a suitable flying soul beast."
---
From the sky, Ma Rulong's voice interrupted Xiao Yan's thoughts. "Brother Yan Xiao, what are you muttering about? We need to pick up the pace if we want to reach Mingdu before nightfall!" With that, his flying soul tool flared brightly, propelling him forward at high speed.
Xiao Yan smiled and increased his speed, the glowing light from his flying soul tool joining the others as they streaked across the horizon like shooting stars.
---
After several hours, a sprawling city appeared below them.
"Yan Xiao, this is Mingdu, the capital of the Sun Moon Empire. I hope you'll grow to like it here," Meng Hongchen said as she flew alongside him. "I dare say, even if you combined the capitals of the Star Luo, Heaven Dou, and Dou Ling Empires, they couldn't compare to Mingdu."
Xiao Yan's Spirit Eyes activated as he surveyed the scene. Below stretched a vast cityscape, with towering buildings reaching for the sky. Many of these structures were over five stories tall, and some even soared to more than ten floors—something he had never seen in Shrek City or Star Luo City.
The streets below were broad and neatly laid out, some main thoroughfares exceeding thirty meters in width. Strange, vehicle-like soul tools traveled along them, reminding Xiao Yan of the modern world he had left behind.
Floating in the air were large airships, their gleaming white hulls gliding gracefully among the clouds. On the ground, lakes shimmered with light as boats traversed their surfaces.
"This city feels like a blend of fantasy and reality," Xiao Yan murmured, marveling at the advanced soul tool technology on display. Then, a question surfaced. "Why doesn't Mingdu have city walls?"
Meng Hongchen laughed softly. "Mingdu doesn't need walls," she replied with quiet confidence, her words brimming with pride.
---
Soon, they descended upon a massive hexagonal structure outlined by glowing lights, its size rivaling that of a mid-sized city. The area was a mix of spacious grounds and towering buildings.
Meng Hongchen pointed ahead. "This is the Sun Moon Imperial Soul Engineering Academy, the pride of the empire and our top academy. The central building is called Mingde Hall, where my grandfather resides."
As they landed on a wide plaza, Meng Hongchen gestured for the others to return to their dormitories, while she led Xiao Yan toward a grand hall. The hall's design was primarily metallic, dominated by muted gold hues that exuded simplicity and strength. Above the entrance hung a plaque inscribed with bold, dark-golden characters: Mingde Hall.
"Grandfather, I'm back!" Meng Hongchen called out, her voice ringing cheerfully as she knocked on the hall's door.
"Come in," a deep voice replied.
Seated within was a stocky man who appeared to be in his forties. Though short, his broad frame radiated power. His reddish-brown hair cascaded down his back, accentuating his thick neck. This was Jing Hongchen, the director of the Sun Moon Imperial Soul Engineering Academy.
Upon seeing Meng Hongchen, his stern demeanor softened. "You've returned safely, my dear. No troubles during your mission?"
Meng Hongchen pouted. "There was danger, but someone saved me." She turned, pointing toward Xiao Yan. "Grandfather, this is Yan Xiao. He rescued me in the Mingdou Forest."
Jing Hongchen's gaze shifted to Xiao Yan, his expression skeptical. "His soul power is under thirty rank. How could he save you? Did you fabricate this story to bring him here?"
"Grandfather!" Meng Hongchen stomped her foot indignantly. "You'll see. Yan Xiao, show him your most useful skill!"
Xiao Yan nodded, activating his Spiritual Detection Sharing. A white soul ring emerged, his golden eyes glowing faintly as he extended his spiritual link toward Jing Hongchen.
Jing Hongchen flinched. A momentary but terrifying aura of a Titled Douluo erupted from his body before he reined it in, allowing Xiao Yan's skill to establish a link.
As the link formed, every detail within a 30-meter radius became vividly clear to Jing Hongchen: the patterns on the soul tools, air currents, and the soul power fluctuations of everyone nearby.
Jing Hongchen's eyes widened in shock. "What… What is this skill?" He could immediately see its immense value in soul tool design and combat scenarios.
Meng Hongchen smirked triumphantly. "Now do you believe me?"
Jing Hongchen's expression turned serious. "Yan Xiao, with such talent, why did you come to the Sun Moon Empire?"
Xiao Yan briefly explained his situation, to which Jing Hongchen responded with an intrigued look.
After a moment of silence, Jing Hongchen leaned forward. "Yan Xiao, how about joining the Sun Moon Imperial Soul Engineering Academy? I promise you a
ccess to the best resources and opportunities, as long as you pledge loyalty to Mingde Hall."
