Standing Next To You

Chapter 14: 'Fei Chuan'

Such taunting happened many times ever since these young teenagers showed up. These children were keener than the others and understood in their few visits that the young master seemed to not like Bei Sangyun.

They initially wanted to get closer to Bei Sangyun because, despite Bei Sangyun's young age, she managed to get invited to the playroom by Grandma Pei.

However, after playing with the young master a few times, they realized that Bei Sangyun was not doing anything at all.

Every time they played, the young master would not look for Bei Sangyun nor speak to her, and likewise, Bei Sangyun did not take the initiative to approach him. The two children remained in their position and did not meddle in each other's business.

They seemed to agree tacitly to ignore each other's existence.

This group of teenagers was confused and asked the young master once about his relationship with Bei Sangyun. They wanted to know if they were friends or what.

The young master did not raise his head as he answered while reading, "She is not my friend."

It was just a simple answer with no malicious intention or hidden meaning. Yet, this simple sentence gave the children the idea that the young master disliked Bei Sangyun.

So to get the young master's good side, they bully Bei Sangyun at every chance they could get. Of course, the only thing they could do right now was mock Bei Sangyun or disturbed her playing.

The young master who was getting ready to play another round halted. He glanced at the boy who spoke. His clear eyes had a hint of annoyance.

"Why are you must compare her to me? I am different than most children of my age. There's no need to compare at all."

The young master wanted to say that if Cheng Li can't even beat him, it was understandable that Bei Sangyun can't beat him as well. In other words, it was perfectly normal to not understand chess and not join in the game. Bei Sangyun was young and it was normal that children at her age do nothing at all.

However, the young master's words came out as bragging to everyone's ears.

Bei Sangyun bit her lips and pretended to continue reading. Inside, she was annoyed at this young master who thought that he was so special.

Just because he was being praised by the older children doesn't mean that he was really good!

"You are right young master. There is really no need to compare at all. I bet Bei Sangyun is pretending that she knows how to read. Look, she even picked up a complicated book and pretend to play smart."

Bei Sangyun was getting angry now. It was hard for her to pretend that she did not hear their mocking.

It was fine if she was teased when the young master was not around. But for some reason, she did not want to get embarrassed in front of the young master. Especially, when it wasn't true at all.

Bei Sangyun closed the book with a thud. There was a scribble of 'Fei Chuan's' name on the front page of the book. She glared at the boy who spoke, "I am not pretending. I know what book I am reading."

As she said this, she subtly glanced at the young master.

The young master just calmly looked at her. Their gaze met.

That look seemed to be telling him that she was not a fool and that she really understood what she was reading.

"Then what is the book about?" The young master who seemed uninterested in anything suddenly blurted a question.

"It's about the rules and mechanism of the game of chess." Bei Sangyun said proudly with her chest forward.

She had been reading this book for a week now.

At first, she only got interested in the book because it had a board of chess displayed on it as a cover. The last time that Cheng Li and the young master played, she watched from afar but did not understand the game.

It was so complicated that Bei Sangyun was having difficulty keeping it up. She wanted to ask how to play the game but looking at the indifferent face of the young master, she pushed down her curiosity.

So when she saw the book among the children's books, she opened it with curiosity. When she saw a childish stroke of 'Fei Chuan' on the first page, she immediately understood that this book had been read by the young master.

Since day one of being invited to this villa to play, Bei Sangyun did not play with the young master and the other children because she felt she was unwelcome.

So she just read the children's book at the corner. She did not own any books and the kindergarten only had picture books that she had read many times.

The children's books in this villa had more words and drawings that were entirely different than the kindergarten books. They were all interesting and new.

It was the first time Bei Sangun found reading engaging so it piqued her interest. She learned a lot from these children's books and she felt that she was getting smarter.

They were many words that she did not understand but their meanings were written at the bottom of the page. There was also instruction to use an encyclopedia if she did not understand the words.

Thankfully, Bei Sangyun found the encyclopedia lying on top of the children's books.

Bei Sangyun had no idea at all that these children's books were not normal children's books. These books were dedicated to gifted children who had high IQs.

Bei Sangyun who had a new hobby of reading found that in every book she read, there was a scribble of a name on the front page.

'Fei Chuan'

Bei Sangyun did not know the young master's name since everyone called him the 'young master' including Grandma Pei.

But after knowing the young master's name, Bei Sangyun was once again reminded that this arrogant beautiful boy was just a child like her. Her fear and timidity when facing him reduced a lot. She was not intimated by him anymore.

It was strange but she felt that she was a bit closer to him in some sense. Also, a spirit of competitiveness rose in her.
