Starting Today I'll Work As A City Lord

Chapter 228: Chapter 225

Merry Christmas everyone. Enjoy this festival with your family.

The kingdom where Lucas's city is located is called the Kingdom Of Siacan, with a territory size comparable to that of country Chad's size on Earth. Compared to several nearby kingdoms, it is already considered a strong nation.

The capital of the Kingdom Of Siacan is called Starfall City, which is a large city with a population of one hundred thousand, making it the most populous city in the country.

The Whispering River has a tributary that flows through Starfall City; this tributary is also named the Starfall River and extends to within five thousand meters of Starfall City, effectively marking the entrance to the city.

Starfall City, being located in the inland region, is less affected by cold currents, so it only experiences light snowflakes that fall intermittently.

Today, a ship docked, delivering a letter from Joe to Starfall City. After the messenger disembarked, he rushed toward the city, paying a copper coin as the entry fee at the city gate before being allowed inside.

Not just anyone can enter Starfall City; those who cannot afford the entry fee, such as the homeless, are unfortunately left outside.

As a result, there are many thatched huts and wooden houses outside Starfall City, inhabited by impoverished civilians. Since their farmlands are outside the city, they have to travel back and forth every day, paying a copper coin each time they enter. It's nearly impossible for ordinary civilians to afford this.

In fact, this situation is common in many cities, especially densely populated ones like Starfall City. Wealthy nobles and merchants occupy large areas of real estate, leaving only a small portion for the common people, and that is often very expensive.

As a result, most commoners rarely live in the city itself; they only enter when selling grain. Otherwise, they reside outside the city, in what is often referred to as a slum.

Upon entering the royal capital, the messenger was immediately hit by a pungent, foul odor that made him feel suffocated. Having spent a few days in Sedona City, he compared it to the damp and dirty stone floors of the royal capital, which made him feel nauseated.

He understood why his master did not return to the royal capital even for his beloved daughter's birthday; it must be unbearable in such an environment.

Honestly, the messenger found it hard to tolerate. It was like the saying goes, "It is easy to go from frugality to luxury, but hard to go from luxury to frugality." After living a few days in the clean city of Sedona, coming to the filthy streets of the royal capital made it truly difficult to bear.

As he walked back to the Joe residence, he witnessed no less than seven or eight instances of people defecating and urinating in the corners, which he greatly despised.

He was somewhat relieved that he had come to the royal capital in winter; if he had arrived during the scorching summer, the stench in the air might have suffocated him.

"Compared to this, Sedona City is simply a heavenly paradise." The messenger sighed as he arrived at the Joe residence. After announcing his presence, the letter was handed over.

He lingered outside, wanting to catch a glimpse of the young miss, the incredibly beautiful girl, hoping to purify his soul that had been tainted by the royal capital's filth.

Unfortunately, Joe's youngest daughter did not come out; she was busy chatting with her friends.

In the guest room of the Joe household, a girl with blue hair and golden eyes spoke up, "Dahlia, you really don't like my brother? He's quite talented and very courageous."

"No, not at all. He's too foolish," Dahlia replied. "Catherine, you shouldn't say such disgusting things, even if you think them yourself."

Dahlia, the youngest daughter of Joe, was sixteen years old, with fiery red hair and striking azure eyes that sparkled with liveliness.

"Hehehe..." Catherine giggled, covering her mouth, sticking out her tongue, and shrugging her shoulders. "I don't want to, but you should know that my father has cut off my source of gold coins recently. The only thing I can do now is pass messages for that idiot brother of mine to earn a little gold."

"You know your brother is an idiot, yet you still want to push me into that fiery pit? I really need to reconsider my friendships."

Dahlia glanced at her friend, who was making a face, and said with irritation, "That's what you get. If you had just accepted the Fourth Prince's proposal, everything would have been fine."

"Pah! That pig-headed guy wants me to marry him? No way! Not even in his wildest dreams!" Catherine jumped up, practically ready to shout at the sky.

"Catherine, calm down. Your father wouldn't agree to that anyway; it's just for show," Dahlia said, her azure eyes sparkling with intelligence.

"Wow, just as expected from you, Dahlia. You saw right through it," Catherine replied, momentarily stunned, then shrugged. "Cutting off my source of gold coins is just my father's way of throwing a smokescreen; he doesn't think much of that pig."

"Please don't say such things. My family is small and humble; we can't handle this kind of turmoil." Dahlia waved her hand dismissively.

Catherine is the daughter of a grand duke from the Kingdom Of Siacan, while Dahlia was merely the daughter of a merchant from a once-noble but now fallen family.

"Hey, hey… Dahlia, you're only a year younger than me. Why act so mature? If someone didn't know any better, they'd think you were older than me." Catherine rolled her eyes, finding her friend's maturity a bit excessive at times.

"Alas…" Dahlia sighed softly and said, "With my father away from the capital, I'm handling all the affairs myself. If I don't act a little more mature, it's hard to keep the lower-ranking officials in check."

"Uncle Joe is something else. It's been almost three months since he left, and your birthday is coming up soon. He still hasn't returned."

Catherine flicked her long blue hair, a hint of indignation in her voice. "It's just so pitiful to see a young girl like you supporting a household."

"..." Dahlia rolled her eyes, resting her chin on her left hand, and replied slowly, "Maybe my father has discovered another profitable business venture."

"Money, money, money…" Catherine muttered under her breath. "So, Dahlia, what kind of guy do you like?"

"Why the sudden question?" Dahlia was taken aback; the topic had shifted too quickly for her.

"I just want to know. You're one of the five great beauties of the capital. What are your standards for a partner?" Catherine's golden eyes sparkled with curiosity.

"Uh… that ridiculous title!" Dahlia shot a glare at Catherine, annoyed. "So, the illustrious Catherine, what are your standards for a partner?"

"That's unfair! You're dodging the question; I asked first!" Catherine protested.

"At the very least, he should be smarter than me!" Dahlia said calmly.

"Uh… you'll end up alone! You're going to turn into an old lady, with skin that can sag down a whole finger length…" Catherine teased, making a silly face.

"... Are you saying I'm a monster?" Dahlia's eyes twitched slightly.
