And yet here I was, fallen to this point, entrapped in the hands of that damn Captain Lu.
Fuck, just nothing at all!
Wen Xian was pissed off for quite a while, her temples throbbing, until she rummaged through the bedside drawer and found a cheap cigarette and a gear lighter, which finally calmed her down a bit.
Now her wounds started to throb with pain, her head buzzing, but she didn’t care.
She flicked the lighter’s wheel a couple of times, sparks flew, the dim light of the flame sprang to life, and she then bent down and lit the cigarette clenched in her mouth.
Inside the jurisdiction office.
Painted white walls were adorned with photographs of the Sichuan-Tibet Line.
Vast golden mountain peaks, endless prairies with gazelles, antelopes, and protected species of cranes.
The unending roads, and the lakes varied in color, deep and mysterious salt lakes.
This season the wind was a bit strong, causing some windows to let in drafts, but they had all been sealed with plastic sheets, bulging slightly.
It was almost time for dinner, and the aroma of food wafted from the canteen.
Sang Nian and the Tibetan lad Zha Xi managed to charm a large meat bun from the canteen ‘mama’ by acting cute.
Nibbling on it, they headed towards uncle Li in the mailroom.
Mailroom uncle Li was there cracking sunflower seeds, glued to the television drama.
“Anian, I heard you and the boss brought back a woman in distress this morning?” Zha Xi asked in his awkward Mandarin.
Still with a mouthful of the hot meat bun, Sang Nian waved a hand and mumbled:
“Don’t even mention it, that woman was fierce, ran like a wild yak, speeding like that it’s easy to get into an accident.”
Despite stating the facts, he deliberately left out that the fearsome and arrogant beautiful woman had fallen into a ditch because of them.
The two joined uncle Li to watch the small television, which was broadcasting a palace drama.
At that moment, it seemed the concubines in the palace were in the midst of a fierce battle, and uncle Li got so excited at one point that he slapped his thigh!
Sang Nian’s eye twitched slightly as he glanced at the television screen and continued to munch his bun:
“…But she’s suspected of entering a restricted area, just as a bunch of criminals who were caught photographing near a nuclear test site have escaped, they are being pursued, and she’s not cooperating with the work, in a while the boss will hand her over, hand her—”
Suddenly seeing something, Sang Nian froze, his eyes widened, and he couldn’t utter the words that were on his lips.
The Tibetan lad Zha Xi watched as the bun that Sang Nian had just taken a bite of fell from his mouth: “…”
He scratched the back of his head, staring bewilderedly at the television, then at Sang Nian, slightly confused, “What’s wrong, why are you stuttering, where are they planning to hand her over to?”
“She, she, she—”
This time it was Sang Nian who was wide-eyed, pointing at the television screen, trembling, “That, that woman, she, she—”
“Huh? Isn’t that Wen Xian, haha, you were just telling me how much you liked her before, what’s wrong, can’t recognize her after she got dressed up for a period drama?!”
Zha Xi also liked Wen Xian, a red-hot celebrity from the entertainment circle, stunningly beautiful, sometimes tender and sometimes seductive, so enchanting.
Just then, the door was suddenly pushed open.
A gust of cold air rushed in, making Sang Nian shiver all over.
Seeing who entered, he jumped up, his bun still uneaten, and rushed over to grab Lu Xiao’s arm, his voice panic-stricken, “Boss, Boss, it’s, it’s not good!!”
The outside was cool, carrying the crispness of early autumn not yet far gone.
Lu Xiao looked at Sang Nian rushing over and grabbing him, frowning, “What are you doing, what’s not good? Get ready, the law enforcement team is arriving soon.”
