Identities story:
A sprawling training ground filled with recruits, each vying for the honor of joining the Zwei Association. Amidst the crowd, a young child finds himself among the hopeful, nervous but determined.
Don Quixote: "Ah! Fair young squire, dost thou tremble not from fear, but from anticipation of glory? The call to defend awaiteth us anon!"
Jaune Arc: "Uh… yeah, sure. Let's go with that."
Narrator: Jaune Arc, an aspiring protector, stood amidst a sea of aspiring Fixers, clutching his shield and his workshop sword handed down from his grandfather tightly. The Zwei Association's entrance exam was renowned for its rigor, testing not just skill but the resolve to protect others under dire circumstances.
The examinees were briefed: their task was to guard a client—a mock simulation provided by the Association—from a variety of "threats" that could range from staged attacks to unexpected tests of morality.
Don Quixote: "Behold, mine valiant ally! Yon figure upon the bench is our charge! Let us gird ourselves with honor and shield their virtue!"
Jaune Arc: "…It's just a practice dummy, right?"
Narrator: The simulated "client" was a meek, frightened figure sitting on a bench in the middle of the examination arena. Though it was an actor pretending to be a client, it represented what every Zwei Fixer might face: a vulnerable figure relying on their guardian for survival.
Jaune found himself paired with the enthusiastic fixer named Don Quixote, whose theatrical antics both inspired and bewildered him.
Don Quixote: "Hark! The fell fiends approacheth! Ready thy blade, noble Jaune, for our trial hath begun!"
Jaune Arc: "Wait, already? But we just started—"
Narrator: The attack began abruptly, a group of simulated attackers rushing toward the duo and their client. Jaune hesitated, his shield raised, but his movements betrayed his lack of confidence.
Don Quixote: "Fie upon thy hesitation! To falter is to court ruin! Strike boldly, mine friend!"
Jaune Arc: "I'm trying, okay?! This is harder than it looks!"
Though his blows were clumsy, Jaune's determination began to shine through. For every stumble, he recovered. For every failed block, he adjusted his stance.
Narrator: As the simulated enemies were dispatched, a new challenge arose. The "client," seemingly frightened by the chaos, attempted to flee the area.
Don Quixote: "Lo, mine companion! Our ward strayeth from the path of safety! Shall we not reclaim them with due haste?"
Jaune Arc: "Wait, is this part of the test? They're not supposed to just leave, are they?"
Narrator: Regardless of the test's intent, Jaune knew one thing: the role of the Zwei was to ensure the client's safety at all costs.
Jaune Arc: "Come on, we can't let them get caught up in another attack. Let's go!"
Rushing after the simulated client, Jaune and Don Quixote found themselves facing an even more daunting scenario: real attackers who had somehow infiltrated the test site.
Don Quixote: "By mine honor! These villains are of true flesh and blood! Rejoice, companion, for we are now embroiled in a righteous crusade!"
Jaune Arc: "Wait, real attackers? Isn't someone going to stop this?"
Narrator: Panic flickered in Jaune's eyes. These weren't simulations anymore—these were real enemies with the intent to harm. Fear gripped him, threatening to root him in place.
Don Quixote: "Cowardice becometh thee not, squire! The Zwei creed demandeth valor, not retreat!"
Narrator: Don Quixote's words resonated deeply. In that moment, Jaune remembered the oath he had taken at the start of the test:
"To shield the vulnerable, to stand firm against the tide of chaos, and to embody the unyielding defense that defines the Zwei."
Jaune Arc: "…That's right. We're the Zwei. Our clients' shield."
Narrator: Resolve surged through Jaune as he raised his shield high. His movements were no longer clumsy but deliberate, every step calculated to protect the client and hold the line.
Don Quixote: "Aye, noble Jaune! Thou art reborn as a true sentinel! Together, we art an impenetrable bulwark against the forces of ruin!"
