Chapter 24: Chapter 22: The Trials of Memory
Kael's vision blurred, the ruins fading away to be replaced by a scene from his childhood. He was back in his village, standing in the training yard with his father. The air was warm, the sun shining down on them, but the weight of the moment was suffocating.
"You're not trying hard enough, Kael," his father said, his tone stern. "If you can't control your power, it will control you."
Kael clenched his fists, the sting of his father's words cutting deep. He had always struggled to meet his father's expectations, always fallen short. The memory was so vivid, so real, that it felt as if he had truly stepped back in time.
But this wasn't just a memory. It was a trial, and Kael knew it. The Heart pulsed in his chest, a reminder that he was no longer the boy his father had scolded. He was stronger now, more capable. He had faced monsters and survived. He would not let a memory break him.
"I'm not that boy anymore," Kael said, his voice steady. "I've grown. I've learned."
The scene shifted, the training yard dissolving into darkness. Kael found himself in a different memory, one he had tried desperately to forget. He was standing in the ruins of his home, the air thick with smoke and the stench of death. His mother's lifeless body lay before him, her eyes staring up at the sky.
"No," Kael whispered, his heart aching. "Not again."
But this time, he didn't fall to his knees. This time, he stood tall, his resolve unshaken. "I couldn't save her then," he said, his voice firm. "But I can save others now. I won't let her death be in vain."
The darkness receded, the memory fading away. Kael stood in the center of the Mirestone once more, his breathing heavy but his spirit unbroken.
"You passed," a voice said, echoing through the ruins. "But the trials are not over."
Kael glanced at Varyn, who had been watching from the shadows. His companion's expression was unreadable, but there was a glimmer of pride in his eyes.
"You did well," Varyn said. "But this is just the beginning."
Kael nodded, his determination renewed. Whatever the Mirestone threw at him next, he would face it head-on. He was ready.
