Chapter 10: Chapter - 10: The Cold Path
After the house had vanished without a trace, the group stood in bewildered silence, their gazes locked onto the vacant patch of earth where it had once loomed. Sunlight cascaded around them, casting a warm, golden glow over the scene, yet an invisible weight held them motionless, suspended in a moment of disbelief.
"This has to be just some elaborate game," Evern finally asserted, his voice steady yet laced with an undercurrent of doubt. "We need to find a way to move forward and leave this—all of this—behind us."
With a shared, hesitant resolve, they began to tread cautiously, the sharp crunch of frost under their boots echoing in the stillness. As they journeyed further into the unfamiliar terrain, they were greeted by a breathtaking yet chilling landscape, dominated by towering mountains that stood like mighty guardians against the pristine blue sky. The ice-capped peaks, their magnificent heights reminiscent of the Himalayas, loomed over them, their sheer grandeur momentarily stealing away their speech.
"Guys," Leo called out, squinting against the glaring sunlight bouncing off the glimmering snow, "how are we even supposed to keep going? It's absolutely freezing out here..." His breath materialized in puffed clouds, dissipating quickly into the frigid air.
"Seriously, I'm with you!" Amera chimed in, wrapping her arms around herself in a futile attempt to generate warmth. "This cold is unbearable!"
"Hold on a second," Andy interjected, his eyes narrowing as he squinted into the distance. A sense of curiosity ignited within him as he pointed ahead. "Do you see that over there?"
"Is it that…?" Leo began, his voice trailing off with a mix of disbelief and hope rising in his chest.
"Which we want!!" Amera exclaimed enthusiastically, her eyes sparkling with renewed optimism.
"Winter suits!!!!" Evern let out a delighted shout, his voice echoing with excitement as they all turned their attention to a colorful pile of winter gear, half-buried beneath the soft, powdery snow.
Without waiting another moment, they dashed toward the vibrant suits, their hearts thundering in their chests. Once they reached the encumbered pile, they quickly donned the heavy garments, the thick fabric embracing them like a long-lost friend, offering warmth against the bitter cold.
"It's amazing how cozy this feels," Andy beamed, a grin spreading across his face as the suit enveloped him in warmth. He stretched his arms, delighting in the newfound security the fabric provided.
A chorus of agreement filled the air as smiles broke through the earlier tension, their spirits lifting with the protective warmth that enveloped them.
With a rekindled sense of purpose, they set off across the frozen expanse once more. However, their renewed progression was suddenly halted as, just ahead, a massive shadow unfurled across the icy surface, looming ominously. As the shape began to resolve into a more defined form, a thread of unease wove through their ranks; they all shared a dawning realization that something—no, someone—was out there, shrouded in the desolate wilderness, and it was far more formidable than anything they had expected...
