Chapter 665: Is chaos better than order? (part 20)
Not even a couple of seconds after Aster and those two had left, a brown flash arrived at the now empty battlefield, it was a tall girl with long dark brown hair and light brown eyes, it was the potential new princess, Fawn who had just finally finished a fierce fight against two captain and two vice-captain level enemies.
Out of whom she was able to kill three, which would explain the though faint still noticeable blood drops that stained her previously pure white and brown attire.
In case you wonder the one who escaped was one of the captains and it didn't happen because she was too weak, but because her vice-captain who should have been protecting and leading the rest of her team which was fighting the subordinates of the two teams that ambushed hers, had disappeared while she was fiercely clashing with those four.
And in order to create a chance to escape, the remaining enemy captain after seeing his companions being ultimately crushed by Fawn, lunched a full-scale attack against her subordinates.
Which forced Fawn to stop her pursue and instead defend her subordinates who had just finished their own fights despite not having someone leading them, which ended up making them waste too much stamina and spirit energy resulting in them being barely able to defend themselves.
Needless to say, but the enemy captain's plan worked, he was able to escape from the battlefield and while Fawn managed to prevent any deaths from happening, her subordinates suffered some heavy wounds, something that wouldn't have happened, have they had another peak Star Tribulation guarding their backs… like that vice-captain of hers.
So, imagine her surprise when her subordinates told her that their vice-captain had rushed in a certain direction out of nowhere, a direction which she followed as soon as she got to know about it, just to find said vice-captain's beheaded corpse.
Feeling the "familiar" traces of sword intent from the now missing head area on the three corpses and recognizing the other headless corpses laying next to the one of her vice-captain, Fawn's pretty eyebrows knitted together.
Fawn then approached the corpses to inspect her vice-captain's corpse and her frown deepened before she looked in two different directions, the first one being the one at which Aster flew away earlier and then the one where the spaceships of the Fey family were stationed.
The potential Fey princess who was momentarily lost in her thoughts was brought back to the real world by a worried man's voice.
"Young miss, are you alright?", a slightly chubby middle-aged man with brown hair and a full beard arrived at the area closest to that battlefield, accompanied by a group of youths with the uniforms of the Mountain Amber family but without the any badge, meaning that they weren't direct descendants, they were Fawn's subordinates.
As for the bearded man that looked like a relaxed uncle, who was by the way a peak Law Integration realm cultivator, and not an average one if you take into account the fact that the space was fluctuating around him due to the anger he was feeling right now, he was the protector sent by Fawn's family.
A curious thing regarding Fawn's situation, is that her "older brother" who is an equal to Aster's godmothers, as he belongs to their same batch and is considered the strongest in his branch which is the main one from the Mountain Amber family, is that said guy is only her half-brother.
While Fawn's father comes from the main branch of the Mountain Amber, her mother is from one of the many secondary branches not even one of the strong ones to be accurate, and the fact that she has the potential to become a new princess was only discovered after she had left the main family's territory due to a certain incident.
Previous to that, she still wasn't given the treatment of a direct descendant by her father's side of the family, she had shown talent and promise so it's not like she was mistreated but they didn't pay her any special attention, she was just one of the many "halfs" out there, as her father who despite not being anything special within the main branch was still a proper direct descendant level elder, had four wives and nine children altogether, Fawn being the youngest among them all.
Her mother's side on the hand which is where she grew up, gave her a better treatment since whether she reached the status of a direct descendant or not, she was still the sole granddaughter of the current patriarch of her mother's family branch, who was by the way the only daughter of the patriarch as well.
Due to the previous she wasn't assigned a half heavenly realm protector, it's not like her mother's branch is weak, as they are still a part of a ruler level force like the Fey, however half heavenly realm cultivators are not that easy to come by, so they are treated like valuable actives that are managed by the council of elders that supervises the Mountain Amber… which is mostly formed by members of the main branch.
Half heavenly realm cultivators are the strongest forces that can be deployed in middle ranked Stellar Systems, so most of them are either stationed in key places that had to be defended or are assigned as protectors to heir level members of the youngest generation.
Hence why her mother couldn't find one in time to accompany her daughter, even with her father's help due to the sudden appearance of the distortions and the fact that she was sent to a "low difficulty place", however she still hired the most reliable and pricey Law Integration bodyguard that was available to guard her daughter.
But then the whole thing regarding Fawn being a potential princess became known and it spread out of the Fey family's sphere of influence somehow, "luckily" Fawn was travelling in the same float as an heir, though from another family, it was the closest ally of the Mountain Amber, in other words the Ocean Aquamarine family.
And said heir had a younger brother who had a sworn brother from the Mountain Amber family, which led to despite him being only an average direct descendant, having the main family assign a half heavenly realm protector to him, naturally we are talking about Albert and Bradley here.
So, after a short discussion, Fawn was given the badge of a direct descendant a status on par or more accurately slightly higher than those two and the half heavenly protector was to take care of her directly too.
And that led to the fact that the kind uncle looking bearded man, had not been present the couple of times when Fawn had met Aster, since the half heavenly realm protector had assigned to supervise all the menial tasks of the float, in part because he was an outsider and in part because the protector wanted the credit for guarding a future princess.
Anyway, this continued until a minute ago when the bodyguard whose name is Otto by the way, saw the half heavenly realm protectors, Wade and practically every other member of the Mountain Amber and Ocean Aquamarine except his young miss and her team, return with two pale and badly wounded Albert and Bradley.
And when Otto asked why she wasn't with them, he was simply told to go find her and bring her to the spaceship, while claiming that she wasn't being targeted by anyone, naturally that was a lie, though Fawn wasn't specially targeted as she wore the badge of the Mountain Amber family, there wasn't a lack of reckless rogues that decided to bet their lives to obtain some benefits.
Like that captain who managed to escape, a diverting tactic like the one he applied is something used by rogue cultivators on a daily basis, those guys who live day by day use anything they can to close the gap between themselves and "rightful" cultivators, well everything besides evil techniques in public at least, as that would make them be labelled as evil cultivators to be hunted.
"Mm", Fawn who had closed her right eye for a second tapped her right foot a couple of times as she slightly nodded before saying.
"Apparently something big happened so let's go back to the spaceship, uncle Otto please take these three corpses with us", with a calm voice she flew towards the area where the spaceships of the Mountain Amber family were stationed.
Luckily her personal spaceship wasn't among the ones Aster took as compensation, even if Wade would have wanted it to be one of the ones handed over to the enemy, they didn't have the token of ownership and Aster didn't choose it anyway.
…
Leaving that aside, a few minutes ago at one of the furthest parts of the battlefield at what would be considered the "outer" area covered by the distortions, a place which was basically abandoned by those with some kind of status, meaning that it was a paradise for rogue cultivators and those from low ranked families and forces whose members by a stroke of luck were nearby when all this started.
In other words, it was a lawless all-out everyone against everyone battle area, well, most of it since a few people wearing renowned uniforms had ended up occupying a couple of spots in this place, among those the first pair of spots that the rogues avoided were occupied by a girl wearing a ring with a white winged sword emblem on it.
Her white and dark gray outfit which consisted in a skirt and a blouse as well as light metal armor made a good contrast with her shoulder length inked black hair as well as her pretty dark green toned eyes, it was the one of the newest additions to the group, the top core disciple from the White Sword faction and according to contribution, the first ranked disciple in the whole sect, Lieze.
And she was currently surrounded in the four directions by a pack of "wild dogs", well they were two pairs of wild dogs to be accurate based on the two different kind of uniforms they were using.
"So, what's this all about?", casually asked Lieze.
"We want the resource that will come out of that distortion of course", said one of the two peak Star Tribulation enemies, which made Lieze snort.
"Rogues like you who don't have the backing of the Mercenary Union, somehow grew the guts to target a core disciple from the Myriad Occupation sect, one would have thought that after all those years in the battlefield your lying skills would be better", she said.
And before the enemies could answer she interrupted them by adding.
"In any case I have more important things to think about, like for example how did you know that I was the correct target for whatever grudge you might have, when nobody has seen my face in public ever since I joined the sect…", Lieze took a second before continuing with a slightly more aggressive tone this time.
"And also, who has offered you a safeguard after you had theoretically fulfilled your mission, the options aren't that many though, you are covered from head to toe with equipment that random mercenaries like you wouldn't be able to afford, disguised to make it look old, so your financial patron should be a force from a high ranked Stellar System".
"That leaves us with two main options, either the Supreme Elemental sect or the Stall family directly, as for the informant it must be that sister and mother of mine…", Lieze's declarations were stopped by the other peak Star Tribulation realm shouting.
"Enough!", this one was wearing a dark yellow leather jacket while the one who spoke earlier had a blue coat, rogues didn't follow the uniform code of families or forces, but they did use something to identify themselves when they banded together to work as mercenaries, since they didn't want to be killed by an ally by mistake in the battlefield.
The jacket wearing cultivator then looked at the coat wearing one as he said.
"Let's just kill her and make our leave, I don't want to be near that monster for even a second more than what is strictly needed", naturally he was referring to Aster, who after his display of battle prowess when rogues were targeting the junior disciples of the sect, basically prohibited them from ganging up on them.
Sure, they were only four against one which was still "allowed" but the fear of that golden sword reaping arms, legs and heads still persisted in the jacket wearing cultivator, which led Lieze to her next conclusion.
"You are truly afraid of him and know who I am and yet here you are, resources and promises of compensation can't be the only reason as to why you are targeting me, a personal grudge perhaps?", she asked, which made both peak Star Tribulation cultivators's faces twist in anger.
"Someone who claims to be neutral but hypocritically massacres rogue cultivators, can't even remember the uniforms they wore!", shouted the jacket wearing cultivators in unison, there were two of each groups, for a total of four.
Lieze nodded at them, but unfortunately the answer they got from her was not even close to what they expected.
"Mm, I have killed too many pieces of trash in my missions and you guys tend to use similar items for different bands, just this year I have dealt with "Blue Wolves", "Blue Bulls" and "Blue Bears" groups, they all wore a piece of blue clothes and had a bigger interest in the junior disciples from the sect than in the resources they were transporting, hence why I didn't put any effort in identifying them".
"So, whether you come from those three or another one, I have never killed anyone that didn't deserve it and I have never taken the initiative to attack anyone, in fact I always offered to tell them where to find what they were looking for, but like I said their interests always went past what their missions demanded", she said.
While in the open sects and forces from middle and lower ranked Stellar Systems are prohibited to bid war at each other, unless the ruling family of the high ranked Stellar System that manages those territories, allows it after receiving a proper justification, dirty war is a daily thing.
At the commercial sector where non-affiliated actives like mercenaries are hired to assault the recollection teams and steal the resources they had gathered, or assassination tries, robbery through pirate groups financed by an enemy group, kidnapping an important target to demand a ransom and the list goes on.
All that creates a demand for the battle-oriented disciples, which results in scouting, bodyguard missions or simply participating in a small-scale battlefield, like this one, despite the elegant name that this event had received as a "Joint Operation", it was a place where killing the opponent wasn't punishable.
And Lieze has always taken the longest and most tedious escorting missions, in which she had to guard the recollection teams that had gone out for the first time, which made them easy targets for mercenaries that should be targeting the resources they had mined, found or gathered after a few months out of the sect.
However, the situation always took the same route, the mercenaries put the resources second and getting the disciples first, one doesn't need to be a genius to know what they wanted to do to them, hence why Lieze wiped them out all the time, the huge contribution points she gathered were not only for showing after all.
"I changed my mind, let's break her limbs and sell her to a cheap brothel at an underground settlement", said the coat wearing peak Star Tribulation cultivator which made Lieze smirk.
"I do remember a similar phrase, there was this piece of scum of around my age who wanted to sell the "trade" with the disciples of the Orange Lotus and yet he ended up them begging pathetically for an antidote while poison corroded him from the inside, he had a blue scarf".
And to top it off, she added.
"And then another "honorable mention" would be that guy who wanted to skin one of the girls from the Green Lotus alive after his invitation was rejected, he used a yellow metal whip and died through the thousand cut method".
"Booom!", both groups saw red the moment the exact causes of death of their relatives was mentioned, they all took out their weapons, spears for the coat wearing pair and swords for the jacket wearing ones.
With a "swoosh", the four of them flashed, appearing around Lieze while aiming their weapons at her limbs, according to the information they got, this was their best chance at revenge, now that their target was restricted as she had no spirit weapon to defend herself.
But just like how they misinterpreted what "neutrality" meant for Lieze, they were mistaken about something, someone who can be considered to be at the same level as Iris and Nerissa… wouldn't be defenseless just because she can't use a spirit weapons.
The moment those four's weapons were swung and thrusted at Lieze, a strange situation unveiled itself.
"Aghhh!".
"What the hell are you doing!".
"Gaaaah!".
"That's my line you bastard!".
Both peak Star Tribulation cultivators ended up piercing and slashing the subordinate of the other with their weapons, all this while Lieze remained floating in that same spot without even a wrinkle appearing on her clothes.
The sight of Lieze being perfectly fine, prevented the captains of their respective two-man teams from fighting each other, they instead retreated a few meters alongside their respective subordinates who were applying pressure on their wounds to stop the blood loss.
"What kind of trick was that?", asked the coat captain as he handed a healing pill to his subordinate, to which the jacket captain shook his head as he did the same for his own subordinate.
"A defensive talisman perhaps, since she can't use a spirit weapon as of current… playing tricks in front of rogue cultivators, what a joke".
Both captains exchanged gazes and their subordinates who were ready for the next assault nodded as well, they left aside any pretense and decided to fight the way they knew the best, dirty.
Staring with the jacket captain taking out a gray talisman from his pocket which then produced a large amount of smoke that blocked Lieze's view, to then make circles around her, they truly acted like a pack of wild dogs surrounding their prey.
'Let's see you revolt in agony due to pain of being slowly poisoned', venomously thought the coat captain as he threw a bottle containing a green viscous liquid to then destroy the bottle with a stab of his spear, which continued its way towards Lieze's right thigh, while his subordinate's one was aimed at her side.
At the same time the swords of the jacket cultivators slashed in a way that they would shave a layer of skin and flesh from Lieze's arms, they even added the first level of intent to their weapons.
But then a mellow voice caused them to freeze on the spot.
"No Sword Style, White Scale", then the smoke was dispelled in the act to reveal that, the subordinate from the jacket captain had a piece of his head shaved clean while the subordinate of the coat captain had his face melted away by poison, needless to say but both were dead, killed by their own leaders!
