Chapter 299: To the Next (2)
Every product that these alchemists create would be something that has already shown its value in the market. Not many would try to create a new one, as research on these new products would empty their wallets.
The first reason why they don't do new research is that they won't even know whether it would be a hit or a flop in the market.
Even if it were to be known that the product would be a hit, to achieve that, it wouldn't be easy. It takes a lot of time and resources. This is something not many can afford.
So, many would stick to the known products to become wealthy, unless someone unearths an old recipe that was lost. Though getting such a recipe would be costly, many would want to get their hands on them.
The reason was simple.
First, the cost of getting such a recipe would be cheaper than making your own recipe from scratch.
Second, everything that the product does would usually be detailed in that recipe.
When a new potion or pill appears, not many would be willing to buy it as they wouldn't know what side effects this new product would cause. This is why there are trials, just like on earth but there is no regulatory industry to oversee that.
Even so, no alchemist who had made a name would bring his own name to sell a faulty product. He would make a loss now rather than destroy his career and his future business profits.
If the product was made and released by a renowned alchemist, people would buy it sooner or later. So, everything that they sell would be properly vetted by themselves before the release to not destroy their name.
Of course, the vetting here means they would conduct a lot of trials.
If the product was poisonous, they could kill the people who are taking these trials. Many times, that did happen and most times when a new product appears, it would have already caused significant damage before it came to the market.
If there were any damages to the trial takers, then who is responsible?
It is the product maker or the one behind them. They now have to take care of the trial takers whose bodies they have damaged, and if there is a family, that burden would be on their shoulders as well.
A new potion would take a lot of time to create and a lot of trials, which leave a lot of people damaged in one way or another. Since these trials are voluntary, if they were killed or if their bodies were damaged, the people who created the product would ensure that these trial takers and their families were taken care of.
So, they wouldn't be punished even when deaths occur.
Of course, even if there was no punishment, it wouldn't be that good for the alchemists either. Those who usually are in their labs and have never seen much death would be shaken to the core and may even give up alchemy as a whole.
Things like this do happen from time to time.
Professionals would see something that would shake their core, and they would give up everything they have worked for.
Scenarios like this are inevitable, whatever the world we live in. Even on Earth, there are many soldiers who are diagnosed with PTSD because of the horrors that they saw in the combat regions.
It was not just soldiers that were diagnosed with PTSD, many do. As long as they see something that shakes a core, then the stress would follow the trauma.
This is why if there are sponsors behind the alchemists, they wouldn't just sponsor any kind of new product without knowing what it could do.
They always think about the profits that these products can give them and at the same time, they don't want the alchemists to break down. I mean, they should have poured a lot into these alchemists to bring them to the higher ranks, and if something happens to their cash cow, then it is considered a loss.
So, even if the sponsors don't care personally about these alchemists, they care about their profits and, in the end, wouldn't let their alchemists do stupid things.
---
Anyway, we were pouring everything that we got into Celine in order to make her a Tier-4 alchemist.
She is on the verge of breaking into a Tier-4 Alchemist but that is not an easy thing to do. She burnt a lot of ingredients but the results were not good as of yet, but we didn't give up.
We went on a lot of hunts in the week and earned a lot, which all went to Celine.
The reason, the allure of having a personal Tier-4 alchemist. Though they are not the topmost of the alchemy world, Tier-4 is like a divide that leaves out the basic ones, while Tier-7 determines whether you are born for alchemy or not.
These ranks are similar to the combat professions. Tier-4 and above are the major fighting forces of any nation, even though Tier-3 and below occupies the major part of the fighting force.
Tier-7 and above are elites and powerhouses of the nation.
In Glessaria, Tier-7 means that you are very powerful and could have a noble title if you didn't have one before. My mother, though she didn't have a title, was still the wife of a viscount. So, she didn't get any titles.
From what I learned later, if she had reached Tier-7 before marriage, she would have gotten a title.
Now that she is a Viscountess by marriage, she didn't get any but if she reaches Tier-8, that wouldn't be a problem. She would get her own title and some lands allocated to her by the royal house.
The royals would even dole out some extra benefits like tax-free for a few years and some resources to develop the lands depending on where she was allocated the lands, which probably would be at the periphery of the kingdom, where the kingdom doesn't have any rights to.
