The Ties of Fate

Chapter 2: A hero new day

The morning sunlight streamed through Elena's window, gently waking her. Her eyes fluttered open as the echoes of yesterday's events washed over her. Stretching lazily, she reached for her phone, expecting nothing more than the usual notifications. Instead, her screen was alive with buzzing messages and endless social media alerts.

Confused, she sat up and began scrolling through the flurry of posts. Her face was everywhere—along with videos and photos from the accident scene. Headlines like "Heroic Woman Rescues Two Men from Tragic Crash" and "Bravery in Action: The Woman Who Risked It All" caught her eye. Her stomach fluttered with a mix of surprise and pride.

As she continued reading, the flood of messages touched her deeply. Strangers were thanking her, calling her a hero, and praising her courage. A small, shy smile crept across her face. It felt good to be recognized—not for her looks or dreams, but for something she had done selflessly.

She took a deep breath, placed her phone down, and got ready for work. Slipping into her café uniform and tying her long brown hair into a neat ponytail, she caught a glimpse of herself in the mirror. The reflection was the same Elena, yet something felt different. She felt a little stronger, a little prouder.

When Elena arrived at the café, her coworkers were waiting for her with wide grins and playful smirks. The moment she stepped through the door, the teasing began.

"Elena, the town's hero!" one of them exclaimed dramatically, throwing their arms up as if cheering.

Another coworker leaned against the counter with a mock-serious expression. "So, are you famous now? Did the mayor call to give you the key to the city yet?"

Before Elena could respond, her best friend Mia appeared from behind the espresso machine, a mischievous glint in her eyes. "Elena," she said, drawing out her name for effect, "I always knew you were amazing, but now the whole world knows too."

Elena rolled her eyes playfully. "Oh, stop it, Mia," she said, though her cheeks flushed with warmth.

Mia wasn't letting her off the hook that easily. "Come on! You have to give us the full story. Were you scared? Did you feel like a superhero?"

Elena shook her head, laughing. "It wasn't like that. I just... did what I thought was right."

One of the coworkers smirked. "Admit it—you felt like a superhero, didn't you?"

Mia chimed in again, leaning closer with a sly grin. "Did you at least strike a pose afterward? Maybe give the crowd a little wave?"

Elena groaned, though she couldn't help but smile at their antics. "You're all ridiculous. Now, let's get back to work before Mr. Daniels catches us slacking."

Her coworkers groaned playfully but returned to their tasks. Mia gave her a friendly nudge as they walked to the back. "I'm proud of you, you know," she said, her voice softer now.

"Thanks, Mia," Elena replied, touched by her friend's sincerity.

Later, their boss, Mr. Daniels, appeared from his office. His usually stern face softened with pride as he approached Elena.

"I saw the news, Elena," he began, his voice warm. "What you did yesterday... it was incredible. Not many people have that kind of courage."

Elena blushed, feeling a little overwhelmed. "Thank you, sir. I just did what anyone would've done."

Mr. Daniels shook his head. "Not anyone, Elena. You. And I want you to know how proud I am of you. You've set an example for all of us."

He handed her an envelope—a token of appreciation. "Take this. It's not much, but you deserve it."

Elena accepted the gesture with a grateful nod, tucking the envelope into her pocket. Her coworkers cheered quietly from the background, with Mia giving her an exaggerated thumbs-up.

"Looks like the hero has a new fan club," Mia teased as Mr. Daniels walked away.

Elena laughed softly, feeling lighter despite the attention.

After her shift ended, Elena couldn't stop thinking about the two men she had rescued. Were they okay? She decided to visit the hospital, driven by an inexplicable need to see them again.

When she arrived, she found herself standing outside a room, peering through the window. Inside, one of the men—the one who had been sitting in the back seat—was asleep. His face was peaceful, though bandaged, and Elena felt an unexpected sense of relief just watching him.

Unbeknownst to her, Nathan was dreaming. In his mind, the girl who had saved him appeared again, her figure glowing in a radiant white dress. She circled him like an angel, her presence filling him with peace and longing.

"Katrina," he murmured in his sleep, his voice soft but full of emotion. "Don't leave me."

The vision began to fade, and he reached out desperately. "Katrina!" he cried, his voice growing louder until he jolted awake with a gasp.

Elena, startled by the sound, rushed to the door and called for a nurse. "He's awake!" she said urgently.

The doctor and nurses hurried into the room, checking on Nathan as Elena stood hesitantly by the doorway.

Once the medical staff confirmed Nathan's vitals were stable, they stepped aside, and Nathan's eyes met Elena's. He stared at her, his expression shifting from confusion to recognition.

"It's you," he said softly, his voice hoarse but steady.

Elena tilted her head, confused. "Do you... know me?"

Nathan nodded slowly, a faint smile forming on his lips. "You're the one who saved me. I remember your face."

Elena stepped closer, her curiosity piqued. "How are you feeling?" she asked gently.

Nathan's gaze softened. "Better now, thanks to you."

Their conversation was interrupted by the arrival of Nathan's secretary, Thomas, who froze briefly when he saw Elena. His expression was unreadable, and Elena couldn't shake the odd feeling his presence gave her.

Nathan introduced them, and Thomas quickly composed himself. "It's nice to meet you, Miss, he said, his tone formal but polite.

As the evening wore on, Elena and Nathan found themselves talking easily, as if they had known each other for years. By the time she left the hospital, Elena felt a warmth in her chest—a sense of connection she hadn't expected.

It had been a whirlwind of a day, but as she walked home, she couldn't help but feel that this was just the beginning of something new.
