Chapter 73 - Dry Eyes
“Does this even make sense???”
Rion shouted in a surprised voice.
“What’s the gacha rate for this? Three percent? How can four of them appear at a 3% rate?”
“That’s why I told you. Pulling the gacha isn’t that fun for me.”
I sipped my tea.
Then, Rion tapped my arm.
“Hey, unnie. Let’s just splurge on a whole truckload.”
“You make it sound like ‘A Truckload’ is someone’s dog’s name.”
【Pork Rain has donated 99,000 KRW.】
【It popped out after digging the ground】
【Muttsukki-is-a-mesugaki has donated 100,000 KRW.】
【It’s my dog’s name】
【Now-hit-the-dog has donated 200,000 KRW.】
【Including transaction fees】
【LOL-FarmersOnly has donated 300,000 KRW.】
【This month’s taxes】
“Hm.”
I hadn’t planned on encouraging donations.
“Well, maybe I should at least try to pull the pickup character.”
After all, I’m still a VTuber. Since I received something, I decided to pull the gacha just as much.
Laura Iris.
This body of mine is, in many ways, quite different from that of a normal person. After all, it’s a body that came out of a game.
For instance, there’s my physical strength.
I’ve been actually cutting down monsters for ten years.
Clearing various gates, this body has been exposed to the magic of the beasts and the gates, giving it immense strength.
Like how a mage in an RPG who hits level 100, even if they pump all their stats into intelligence, still ends up with a strength stat far above ordinary people.
Luck is similar.
Is it because I inherited the blood of the ducal family’s ancestors? Or perhaps because I’m the villainous noblewoman? Maybe it’s both.
I’ve always been pretty strong when it comes to bad luck.
The worse my luck, the better things turn out—something like that.
‘It’s not exactly something I’m fond of, though.’
Am I designed to be one of those villains who keep coming back, no matter how many times the protagonist knocks them down?
Like, even after getting beaten up and written off, some dark force approaches me; or I get caught and imprisoned by the protagonist, only to find a chance to break out; or I die from the protagonist’s sword but get resurrected by some mysterious power.
Villains like that—persistently tenacious. I wonder if Laura Iris was born with that kind of fate.
But, wouldn’t it be smarter to just avoid getting cornered in the first place?
If I were to use a metaphor, it’s like having a trait where even if your family is wiped out, you alone survive.
But even if I somehow got a miraculous second chance after losing everything… wouldn’t it be smarter to just hold onto what you already have?
That’s why I’ve never thought of myself as lucky.
In fact, I think it’s more like a curse.
For example, let’s say my enemy appears before me when I’m about to die.
If, while cornered, I threw a knife and it somehow lodged itself in my enemy’s chest, would that be considered physical ability or luck?
The mere act of thinking about such things doesn’t sit well with me.
People say luck is a skill, but a victory won through luck always feels a bit unsatisfying.
Wouldn’t any human prefer to savor the sweetness of a clean victory?

【Ceiling Points: 200】
“Wow… That’s insane. Five 5-star characters from the ceiling!?”
Meanwhile, Rion was going wild beside me.
Chel had her eyes wide open, and the reactions in the chat were intense. It seemed like my luck spiking at the last minute, after all the stagnation, was giving them a bit of a thrill.
As for me, I remained indifferent. Testing my luck wasn’t something I could do.
If you charge for 200 pulls, and you get nothing but trash for 190 of them, only for the last pull at 200 to be a jackpot, isn’t that basically predetermined?
It’s no different from buying the character at full price. Knowing the result ahead of time means you never experience the heart-pounding thrill that gacha games are known for. That’s why I don’t particularly like gacha games.
But since everyone else seems to enjoy it, perhaps this is the perfect world where no one gets hurt.
With a sigh, I called Inagika.
[Laura?]
“Please say, ‘This is totally Lucky Nagika, isn’t it.'”
[Ugh… That’s embarrassing…]
“Aren’t we friends?”
[Fr-friends…! Y-yeah! We’re friends…!]
“Then, just this once for me.”
[Alright… Th-this is totally l-lucky Nagika, isn’t it…!]
-Click-
I ended the call with Inagika.
That aside.
‘Wasn’t this supposed to be a story-focused stream?’
How did it turn into a gacha stream?

Since I’d done enough gacha pulls, I decided to continue with the story.
“Huh, does this have no voice acting?”
As I began Chapter 1’s story, Rion tilted her head.
“Blue Record doesn’t have voice acting for the main story.”
“But the prologue does.”
“Only the prologue is dubbed.”
Chel answered like that.
Blue Record doesn’t have voice acting for its main story. I’m not sure why.
But I could guess. Before Blue Record, mobile gacha games like Girls’ Frontline or Idol Producer: Cinderella Kingdoms didn’t have full story dubs either.
Back then, it wasn’t common for mobile games to have fully voiced stories. The only fully dubbed mobile game I know is Princess Connect.
I’ve also heard that some games skip voice acting to speed up story production. I don’t know if Blue Record falls into that category.
It’s unfortunate that there’s no voice acting for the story, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
For some VTubers, it’s actually an advantage, and it seems Chel is one of those who benefited from it.
“We will protect our daily lives! Our freedom! Awoooouuuu!!!”
Blue Record’s iconic scene.
The scene where the protagonists summon monsters to defend their everyday lives.
Chel raised her voice and shouted.
It was an enthusiastic performance.
Though her expression remained indifferent, her voice brimmed with excitement.
Of course, her voice wasn’t exactly identical to the original character’s.
However, by slightly altering her tone and timbre, she tried to express the scene in a way that felt close to the original.
I imagine that’s what the characters would sound like saying those lines.
‘So that’s why Blue Record streams are popular.’
After all, many VTubers have voices close to anime characters.
Reading only the text can feel a bit dull, but when voice acting suddenly kicks in, it’s like color being added to your ears.
While VTubers’ voice acting may not be on the same level as professional voice actors, some VTubers make voice acting one of their main content focuses.
For them, Blue Record must have been like a hidden treasure.
“It hasn’t been a hidden treasure for quite a while. They promoted it heavily through corporate VTubers in the Japanese server.”
Chel told me that later. I guess VTubers are indeed a significant marketing tool these days.
In any case.
I won’t spoil the story, but I could see why Blue Record’s story was so well-received.
The proof was in Rion’s tears.
“Sniff… The characters are so pitiful…”
Tears dripped from Rion’s eyes.
Her eyes were swollen and red. Judging by the tear marks and her puffy face, she had cried a lot.
As I watched the sniffing Rion, I sipped my sweet tea.
“Seems like you enjoyed it.”
“Yeah… I thought it was going to be a light-hearted story, but it suddenly got really deep.”
“It certainly did. There have been many games with well-received stories, but it’s been a while since I’ve seen a mobile game with such a good story. Its themes were well-executed.”
“Exactly…”
“Since we’re out of time for today, let’s continue the story next time.”
“Should we continue tomorrow? I’ll be working from home again.”
“That doesn’t sound bad. Then…”
“Why didn’t you cry?”
As Rion and I were discussing our thoughts on Blue Record, Chel suddenly interrupted.
“What are you talking about? Rion cried so much she’s practically at risk of dehydration.”
“Uh… yeah, she probably won’t have dry eyes for a while…”
“Did you have dry eyes?”
“Don’t all modern people suffer from dry eyes?”
“But you didn’t cry, Laura.”
Chel stared at me blatantly.
“Didn’t you find it moving?”
“I did.”
“Then why didn’t you cry?”
It’s just that I didn’t feel moved enough to cry.
It’s not that I lack emotional sensitivity. However, in aristocratic society, showing tears can sometimes be a sign of weakness.
I am the daughter of the Iris Ducal family and was once poised to become the next head of the house.
A ruler must not be swayed by trivial emotions. It is a ruler’s duty to observe the world with a broad perspective.
Thus, I had rigorously trained myself not to reveal joy, sadness, or fear on my face, though I could still feel them in my heart.
“Laura-unnie being heartless and cold isn’t exactly news.”
That’s apparently what Rion thought.
You could call it a misunderstanding. Especially since Rion seems to think I’m incapable of fear, but I do experience fear and tension.
Especially in battle, fear is essential.
Too little tension leads to mistakes, and too much tension leads to mistakes as well.
So, I simply didn’t show it. But there’s no need to correct the misunderstanding.
Being perceived as heartless and tearless carries a certain intimidation factor, and sometimes, that slight difference can lead to victory on the battlefield.
“As long as you’re human, everyone has emotions.”
The person least likely to be emotional was the one who said that.
“I’ll be back tomorrow. Goodbye.”
With that, Chel bowed and left my room. She even left her phone for tracking movements behind.
And the next day, Chel returned to my house.
With Clannad in hand.

EYEAI’s CEO, Jung Hoyoung, let out a deep sigh.
“…Is there really no other way?”
The sound of Rion sniffling. Laura casually clinking her teacup.
And occasionally, Chel’s remarks echoed from his phone.
“I think we’ll have to choose from the 6th generation.”
Manager Lee Jungwoo offered.
Jung Hoyoung knew this too.
“If we’re going with the 6th generation, we can’t leave out Aurora, can we?”
“Shouldn’t it be fine? Aurora seems to be the one closest to Chel.”
It seemed fine, but also not.
Jung Hoyoung found Aurora difficult. Though she appeared gentle on the outside, there wasn’t a more complicated VTuber to handle.
Still, it was a relief that she hadn’t caused any trouble since her debut. Yet, somehow, it felt like the people around Aurora were slowly becoming… strange. Was it just his imagination?
‘Maybe she has some kind of influence that affects her surroundings.’
Was that a good thing?
Jung Hoyoung pondered, but no matter how many times he tried to reason it out, the answer remained the same. If they were going to select someone from the 6th generation, they couldn’t exclude Aurora.
“Alright then, let’s go with Aurora and Chel.”
Jung Hoyoung concluded.
On his desk was the “Winter Voice Sales Plan.”
