The Young Demon Lord and her Maid-Knight

Chapter 48: Bridgeton

As the sun started rising over the horizon and the sky turned brighter, the birds began singing, filling the air with their melodious tunes. It looked like one of those nice days, the kind that promised adventure and discovery.

"So, guys, let's head toward the city," Elara suggested, her voice filled with excitement.

The group set off down the path, the morning light casting long shadows behind them. The air was crisp and fresh, carrying the faint scent of blooming flowers and the earthy aroma of dew-soaked grass. As they walked, the towering silhouette of the bridge-city began to emerge from the morning mist, revealing itself bit by bit.

As they approached, the grandeur of the bridge-city became more evident. The walls surrounding it curved gracefully like a crescent moon, their stone surfaces reflecting the soft glow of the dawn. The closer they got, the more details they could make out—intricate carvings adorned the gates, and banners fluttered gently in the breeze.

"are those buildings on the bridge?" Lilith asked in surprise, her eyes widening as she squinted to get a better look.

"It looks like it," Elara replied, an amazed expression spreading across her face. From their vantage point, they could see structures of various shapes and sizes, some with spires reaching towards the sky, others with wide, welcoming balconies.

"The last time I was here, it was just a small bridge built out of wood and stone, with a small town on the other side and just a guard post on this side," Elara exclaimed, her voice tinged with disbelief. "I can't believe how much it has changed."

As they continued their approach, the sounds of the bustling city began to reach their ears—a distant hum of conversations, the clatter of hooves on cobblestone, and the occasional shout of a vendor hawking their wares.

As they reached the gate, they could see guards ready to examine travelers and merchants. Since they were there so early, they could walk right up to them without waiting.

"Greetings," a guard said. "Welcome to Bridgeton, travelers. What brings you all here? Two faeries and two humans, or are you demons?"

"It can be hard to tell, so no hard feelings, okay?" the second guard continued, trying to lighten the mood.

"Not at all," Elara said with a warm smile. "I am human, and she is a demon," she said, pointing at Lilith. "And yes, these two here are faeries."

The second guard nodded in approval.

The first one began again, "Are you guys on the way to the faerie village in the forest, perhaps?"

"Faerie village?" Lilith asked with a hint of curiosity.

"Yes," the first guard replied. "It's a beautiful place, hidden deep within the forest west from the city on the other side of the bridge. Many travelers come through here on their way to visit it, especially those with faerie companions. It's known for its enchanting beauty and the warm hospitality of its inhabitants."

"We weren't specifically planning on it," Elara said, "but it sounds intriguing. We might just have to visit now."

"It's worth the journey," the second guard added. "Just follow the main road through the city, and you'll find the path leading to the forest on the other side. The village is well-marked once you get closer."

"Thank you for the information," Elara said, nodding appreciatively.

As they passed through the gate, the sights and sounds of Bridgeton enveloped them. The city was already waking up, with shopkeepers setting out their wares and children laughing as they ran down the cobblestone streets. The bridge itself was a marvel of engineering, with buildings perched along its length, connected by a network of walkways and staircases.

"This place is incredible," Lilith said, gazing around in wonder.

"I can't believe how much it's changed," Elara added, her eyes sparkling with excitement.

The group continued their journey into the heart of Bridgeton. "Let's start by finding an inn," Elara began. "We need to resupply up. Now that we take the waypoint route. And we could use the time to check out this place."

Lilith remarked "It's crazy to think we are walking on a bridge right now."

The others agreed with Elara and began asking around. They were told about an inn on the other side of the bridge called the "Hidden Gem." It had beds for faeries and humans alike.

As they made their way across the bridge, they took in the vibrant surroundings. The bridge was a bustling thoroughfare, lined with shops, stalls, and small cafes. Artisans displayed their crafts, from intricately woven tapestries to finely crafted jewelry. Street performers entertained passersby with music, magic tricks, and acrobatics. The atmosphere was lively, filled with the chatter of townsfolk and the calls of vendors advertising their goods.

"Look at that," Lilith pointed out, admiring a street artist who was painting a stunning mural on the side of a building.

"Everything here is so lively and colorful," one of the faeries remarked, her wings shimmering in the sunlight.

They continued to gather the supplies they needed: fresh food, potions, and other essentials for their journey. Each shop they entered was filled with unique items and friendly shopkeepers eager to help. The faeries found a store that sold enchanted trinkets, while Lilith picked up some rare herbs from an apothecary.

Finally, with their packs full and spirits high, they made their way to the "Hidden Gem." The inn was tucked away down a charming side street, its entrance marked by a beautifully carved wooden sign depicting a sparkling gemstone.

As they stepped inside, they were greeted by the warm glow of lantern light and the comforting aroma of baked goods and spiced drinks. The innkeeper, a kind-looking woman with silver hair and a welcoming smile, approached them.

"Welcome to the Hidden Gem! How can I assist you today?"

"We'd like to rent some rooms," Elara said. "We have two faeries in our group and was recommended to come here."

"Of course," the innkeeper replied. "We have just the right accommodations for you. Follow me."

She led them up a cozy staircase to their rooms. Each room was thoughtfully designed, with beds and furniture suited to their specific needs. The faeries had airy, open spaces with soft, flower-filled nooks for resting, while Lilith and Elara had comfortable, spacious rooms with large, inviting beds.

"Thank you," Elara said. "This place is wonderful."

"Enjoy your stay," the innkeeper said, giving them a warm smile before leaving them to settle in.

As they unpacked and relaxed, they couldn't help but feel excited about exploring more of Bridgeton. The city was full of surprises and hidden gems, and they were eager to uncover them all before continuing their journey to the faerie village.
