Chapter 15: Dungeon of the Wind King
The four adventurers, Tobe, Miri, Yuka, and Max, stepped into the marble-lined entryway of the dungeon. Their HUDs illuminated with the words: Dungeon of the Wind King. Each of them exchanged glances, absorbing the surprising elegance of their surroundings. Unlike the rugged, cave-like dungeons they had encountered before, this one was lined with polished marble slabs, grand chandeliers, flickering candles, and elegant blue torches. The ambiance gave the impression of a royal palace rather than a dungeon.
"Stay sharp, everyone," Miri said, her shield raised and sword at the ready as she took the lead. Her eyes darted across the ornate designs etched into the walls. "This doesn't feel like any dungeon we've ever been in."
Yuka walked slightly behind her, already summoning her new companion, Spryt. The tiny elemental sprite flitted beside her, shifting between the colors of fire, water, earth, and wind. "The decorations are beautiful, though," Yuka commented, trailing her fingers along a marble column. "Almost like someone lives here."
"This... is not what I expected," Max said, his voice filled with suspicion. He dragged the tip of his greatsword across the smooth floor. "Why does it look so fancy? Where's the smell of death and decay?"
Tobe, in his usual nonchalant manner, strolled in the middle of the group. He adjusted his gloves, a sly grin on his face. "Maybe Max is just grumpy because we haven't seen any monsters yet. You missing your daily dose of slashing things?"
"I'm not grumpy," Max snapped, his frown deepening. "I'm cautious. This place is way too nice. It's like a trap."
Miri turned her head slightly and gave Tobe a warm but firm smile. "Focus, Tobe. We need to stay alert."
"Sorry, sorry. My bad," Tobe said, sticking his tongue out playfully before falling into step.
The group's friendly banter ceased as they reached a wide circular room. The polished floor shone under the glow of a massive chandelier hanging overhead. As soon as they stepped inside, the hallway behind them sealed shut with a resounding thud. Max rushed back, his greatsword in hand, trying to pry the door open.
"Hey! Let us out!" Max shouted, slamming his weapon against the marble. "This thing's solid!"
"You really thought yelling at a door would work?" Tobe teased, casually crossing his arms.
Yuka, meanwhile, examined the intricate artwork etched into the walls. "There's something eerie about this. Do you hear that fluttering sound?"
Before anyone could respond, the floor began to rumble. Miri raised her shield instinctively, and Max stepped back from the door. Tobe straightened up, his gloves crackling faintly with mana.
"Get ready!" Miri ordered, her voice steady.
The floor beneath them started descending like an elevator. As it moved, Yuka's ears twitched. Her eyes widened. "Wind Bats!" she exclaimed, pointing to the randomly placed small holes in the marble walls.
A swarm of bats, their wings shimmering with wind energy, burst forth. The air filled with the sound of flapping wings and high-pitched screeches.
Miri took the frontline, her sword slicing through the first wave of creatures. "Stay together and don't let them surround us!" she yelled, her shield deflecting a dive-bombing bat.
Max roared as he swung his greatsword in a wide arc, cutting down several bats in a single blow. "Finally, something to fight!" he bellowed, though his expression was more annoyed than pleased.
Tobe stood in the center, weaving mana into his gloves. With a sharp motion, he cast Explosion Impact, sending a group of bats crashing into the walls. "These guys are like mosquitoes and flies! Just how many are there?"
Yuka summoned Blubby, to assist. Blubby leapt into the fray, shooting some bats with slime shots. Spryt, now glowing with a fiery hue, shot bursts of flame at the swarm. "Blubby, keep them away from the platform's edge! Spryt, focus on thinning their numbers!" Yuka commanded.
The battle raged on for what felt like an eternity. The adventurers' stamina began to wane as the relentless swarm continued. Tobe pulled two recovery potions and two mana restoration potions from his Space Space spell.
"Here, catch!" Tobe shouted, tossing a recovery potion to Miri and Max, while handing Yuka a mana restoration potion. He downed his own potion quickly, mana replenishing as he prepared a Fall Lightning.
"This platform better reach the bottom soon, or we're gonna drop from exhaustion before the bats stop!" Max complained, stomping a bat under his boot.
After defeating and clearing many wind bats, the swarm suddenly dispersed, retreating into the darkness. The platform continued to descend, the silence unnerving.
"Finally," Max grumbled, wiping bat blood off his blade. "But why is this thing still going down? It's taking forever!"
Before anyone could answer, a wall they passed above them cracked. Rubble rained down.
"Move!" Miri shouted, using her shield to block falling debris. Max swung his greatsword to clear the larger chunks, while Tobe and Yuka darted around the falling rubble. Miri lunged forward, pushing Tobe out of the way of a particularly large piece.
As the dust settled, a hulking figure landed with a heavy thud. A Wind Ogre, its skin a glowing light green, loomed over them. Its red eyes burned with malice, and its mouthless face added an unsettling air of menace.
"No mouth?" Tobe muttered, "That's... disturbing."
"Focus!" Miri barked, readying her sword and shield. "This thing's not going to wait for us to figure it out!"
The Wind Ogre roared, rushing forward. Miri braced herself, shield up, but Tobe dashed ahead, using High Jump to vault over the creature. In midair, he cast Mana Strings, attaching glowing threads to the ogre's mana pool. With a burst of energy, he yanked himself downward, delivering a powerful Explosion Impact with the soles of his feet to the ogre's neck.
The ogre staggered, momentarily stunned. Tobe took advantage of the opening, flinging the creature into the air with another Mana String. "Hit it with everything you've got!" he yelled.
Miri activated Bastion Weapon Integration, fusing her shield with her sword. She leapt, slashing the ogre midair. Max followed, his greatsword cleaving into the ogre's torso.
Yuka coordinated her summons. "Scale, charge your Wind Cannon! Spryt, combine the elements into it! Flake, add ice magic!" The resulting attack, a devastating move called Calamity Cannon1, struck the ogre, engulfing it in a storm of elemental energy.
The ogre absorbed the elements, its arms glowing as it prepared a devastating blow. "If that thing lands a hit, this platform's done for!" Max shouted.
Thinking quickly, Tobe used Reconstruct, summoning two massive hands from the platform's marble to hold the ogre in place. "Finish it now!" he ordered.
Yuka half-summoned Gyutei (specifically his head) and ordered his tongue to fling Max's greatsword at the ogre's arm, completely stopping the charged fist. She then half-summoned Balboa (specifically his arm) to launch Miri into the air. Miri agreed, then placed herself atop Balboa's palm as Balboa flung her up high, Miri raised her sword, activating a Bastion-Supported-Rocket-Powered Downward Slash. With one decisive strike, she severed the ogre's head.
As the ogre's head separated cleanly from its body, the creature's form began to dissolve, fading into wisps of wind mana. Tobe returned the platform to its normal state just as he noticed Miri falling. He tried to position himself to catch her, only for Miri to activate Weightless Embodiment. She floated down gracefully, landing softly in front of Tobe with a playful smile.
"Thanks for the thought, though, Tobe," she said, her tone and smile warm and happy.
Tobe awkwardly coughed and straightened his posture, trying to brush off his failed attempt. However, a green, glowing rock fell from above and landed squarely on his head. Rubbing the sore spot and muttering under his breath, he picked up the mysterious stone, examining it closely.
"What is this?" Tobe wondered aloud as the platform finally reached the next level of the dungeon.
Unable to identify what it was, Tobe tossed the mysterious green rock into his Space Space spell, he switched it to vacuum mode, efficiently collecting the Wind Bat carcasses. Miri observed him with a slight smirk, brushing debris off her shield.
"Let's not waste any more time here," she said, gesturing toward the path ahead.
Max groaned. "That took way too long…" His tone was filled with exaggerated frustration. As they moved forward, they entered another massive circular chamber, eerily similar to the one they had just cleared.
Max raised his arms theatrically. "WELL! This feels like déjà vu!"
The moment they stepped into the room, the path behind them sealed shut with a loud thud, prompting Max to spin around.
"GREAT! What is it now?!" he muttered.
Yuka's ears perked up as she heard something above. Her gaze shot upward, prompting Tobe and Miri to follow her lead. Max groaned but eventually looked up as well.
Descending steadily from above was a tall, imposing figure draped in a cloak of emerald and teal fabric that shimmered faintly in the dim light. The figure's elegance was unsettling, his long limbs and sharp features making him look almost ethereal.
Max tightened his grip on his greatsword. "Well… who the heck is this tall, dandy, fashionable-looking fellow?"
Tobe added, "He looks friendly!"
The figure raised one hand, forming it into a casual flicking gesture. Miri immediately barked orders. "Form up! Bastion, wall mode!"
Her shield, Bastion, expanded and transformed into a massive wall. She activated Defense Up, layering magical protection over the group. With practiced efficiency, Miri summoned Blubby, who promptly shifted into its defensive Shield form.
Tobe planted his hand on the ground, activating Reconstruct to create a sturdy barricade. "NEVER MIND! NOT FRIENDLY!"
"Nope!" Max added.
The figure flicked his finger, unleashing a concentrated gust of wind that struck like a freight train. The sheer force tore through their defenses, flinging them backward. They crashed through the wall at the back of the chamber, groaning in pain as they tumbled into a vast cavern below. The walls of the cavern shimmered with yellow, blue, and green crystals, casting an otherworldly glow over the scene.
Yuka recovered first, quickly summoning Scale. She leapt onto his back and directed it toward Max, who was flailing wildly as he fell.
"Gotcha!" Yuka shouted as Scale caught Max mid-air.
Tobe, meanwhile, was too distracted by the stunning crystalline walls. His thoughts were a mix of awe and absurdity. "Oh hey! Now THIS is how a dungeon is supposed to look!"
Miri grabbed Tobe, activating Weightless Embodiment to slow their descent. "Please focus, Tobe senpai," she said with a calm smile.
"Thanks, Miri," he replied sheepishly while scratching the back of his head.
They floated gently down and landed on Scale's back. As the group regrouped, they shared uneasy glances, trying to plan their next move. Suddenly, the same tall figure from before appeared, floating gracefully downward.
Tobe groaned, and flashed a smug grin, "So… you're the Wind King, huh?"
Their HUDs confirmed it: Wind King. His name flashed ominously, accompanied by a swirling wind effect.
The group braced themselves as the Wind King extended his arms, conjuring miniature tornadoes that began to spin menacingly around him.
The battle began with the Wind King sending a barrage of wind blades toward them. Miri took the lead, raising her shield and activating Shield block to deflect some of the projectiles. "Stay close! Coordinate your attacks!" she commanded.
Tobe summoned multiple Vine Whips, connecting them to several crystals embedded in the cavern walls. Using Reconstruct, he shattered the crystals into jagged shards, which he hurled at the Wind King.
The Wind King effortlessly redirected the shards with a swirl of wind, but Tobe was already moving. He activated Firas Bolto, charging it until it glowed blue. With a powerful force, he sent the blazing bolt straight at the Wind King. The projectile detonated on impact, creating a fiery explosion that briefly obscured their opponent.
Max seized the opportunity, leaping from Scale's back with surprising agility. His greatsword crackled with energy as he brought it down in a thunderous strike. The Wind King caught the blade with a gust of air, but Max pushed through with sheer brute force, forcing the Wind King to retreat slightly.
"Nice one!" Tobe shouted, before noticing the Wind King preparing another attack. "Uh-oh, incoming!"
The Wind King summoned a massive whirlwind, aiming to engulf them all. Yuka countered by half-summoning Gyutei, her Poisonous Frog familiar.
"Gyutei, poison mist!" she commanded.
Gyutei croaked loudly, releasing a thick, toxic cloud that disrupted the whirlwind's structure. The poison caused the Wind King to falter, giving the team a brief window to regroup.
Miri charged forward, activating Strength Up and Pierce. Her sword glowed with energy as she lunged at the Wind King, aiming for his heart. He deflected her attack with a blade of wind, but the sheer force of her strike forced him back.
"Flake, now!" Tobe shouted.
Flake, the Snow Fairy, flew into action, launching Icicle Rush at the Wind King. The sharp icicles pierced the Wind King's wind barrier, striking true and freezing parts some of the Wind King's wind barrier. Flake followed up with Frost Breath, the Frost Breath seeping through the holes the icicles have made, managing to encase most of the Wind King's torso in ice.
"Keep up the pressure!" Yuka encouraged, summoning Balboa, her Rock Golem familiar.
Balboa slammed his massive fists into the Wind King, creating a shockwave that somehow destabilized the Wind King's wind barrier. As the Wind King retaliated but using sharp wind to cut Balboa to pieces, Miri capitalized on the moment, activating Shield Bash and then activating Halo Flash after, to try and knock the Wind King off balance.
The Wind King clicked his tongue, unleashing a tempest that blew everyone back. Oculis, hovering nearby, activated Wide Party Heal, enveloping the team in a soft, restorative glow.
"Thanks, Oculis!" Tobe said, dusting himself off.
The Wind King floated higher, summoning a colossal, explosive tornado, forming on his hands. The group exchanged determined glances and regrouped atop Scale, bracing for the storm.
"Again! Defense formation!" Miri shouted. She reactivated Defense Up, spreading the protective aura across the team. Bastion transformed into its wall form, providing an anchor for their defense.
"Flake, ice sphere!" Tobe commanded. The Snow Fairy conjured a massive sphere of ice, which Tobe quickly reshaped using Reconstruct into a wide, sturdy shield. He layered it with a dense barrier of water using Aqua Control, adding extra resilience.
Yuka summoned Blubby and ordered it to shift into its defensive slime form. The massive Slime Shield jiggled into place, adding another layer of protection. Max, lacking defensive spells, positioned himself at the rear, ready to counterattack if needed.
The colossal tornado hurtled toward them, its destructive force shaking the cavern. Oculis timed Wide Party Heal perfectly, countering the shockwaves as the attack struck. Chaos erupted as the shields buckled, the storm overwhelming their defenses. The blinding tempest consumed everything, plunging the scene into darkness.
