Undead Lord of Gluttonous Pride

Chapter 8: Undead Betrayal?

Damien dragged the corpse to the edge of the roof, kicked it off, and watched it fall and hit the ground with a wet thud. He felt strange seeing something that had been living only seconds before and was now dead.

He didn't feel especially affected since it was going to kill him, but he couldn't say the same for... the actual him.

The foggy memories that continued to bounce around still continue to do so, and the memories of the real Damien are just there—sat on the sidelines.

In "Damien's" memories, he found out that what makes a person is their experiences in life, so why does it feel like he wasn't Damien when he has his memories?

That was when he thought about the foggy ones. They must still be influencing him even though they couldn't be unravelled. 'But of course... That's just a theory...'

He looked to the side and saw the skeleton also doing the same as he did—pushing the bodies off the roof.

For some reason, when they were having a short break, it suddenly gestured for him to do this. He didn't know why yet, but he suspected it must be important.

After that, they continued to hop between the rooftops. Hours seemed to pass by as they continued to roam around; this time, they encountered several adversaries.

From wolves to eels, they were able to deal with them swiftly with the other undead that they grouped up along their way.

Currently...

"SCREECH!"

They were hunting one of those birds.

The undead group ran along the surface of an especially long rooftop made of bricks. Damien was situated in the middle while four ran near him in a cross formation.

Behind him was the archer he was with, while the three others were two skeletons and one zombie. Each of them wore some piece of rusty armour and held swords of varying quality.

They all rushed forward towards the bird that was charging directly at them. At the meter gap between them, they all fell to the ground and slid under it.

Their bodies scratched against the rough, scratchy surface of the ceiling underneath them.

SWOOSH...!

The air from the bird's dash towards them blew over the top of their heads. The archer quickly got back up to his feet and shot an arrow at the back of the bird, causing it to fall and crash inside the roof of a building.

Everyone else, including him, hastily got up off the floor before hopping over into the building through the hole it created—their blades flashing out of their sheaths.

The two skeletons wielding swords leapt down into the hole and pierced through the bird's wings, followed by the zombie, who pierced through its back. And finally...

[You have slain a tainted creature, Brown Bird.]

Damien stabbed into the back of its skull with his sword, killing it. When he killed it, however, a screen appeared, indicating his victory over it, albeit with help.

He stared at the screen, which he had seen several times previously because they had killed a few other creatures on the way today.

However, despite having already seen it, that doesn't mean he isn't curious about its purpose besides telling him that something is already dead.

How does he know that something is definitely dead? Because when it appeared for the first time, he stabbed a corpse multiple times and confirmed that it was definitely dead.

Damien then watched the skeleton check on its condition on whether or not it was dead before climbing out. No matter how many times he told them, they seemed to not listen to him.

Or... incapable of it.

The zombie is definitely able to hear, considering it still had ears, albeit they were hanging off. The skeletons, however, while not so obvious, can actually hear.

Whenever a loud noise appears, they always snap their heads towards the direction of it.

He sighed and finally pulled himself out of the broken house. Before getting out, he took one glance inside it and noticed a wooden cradle.

It rocked back and forth due to the sudden intrusion into the home. Damien stared at it with a hint of pity before looking away from it.

After getting out and getting back onto a more stable rooftop, he looked towards the others and saw them as stiff as a board, almost like they were acting to become statues.

He raised a brow, confusion written over his face. That was until they suddenly dashed towards him. Damien—out of reflex—swung his sword at them.

His sword sliced through the air like a knife cutting into butter. However, his attempt to keep them away ended in failure, for they dodged it in the nick of time with ease and continued their way towards him.

One of the two skeletons disarmed him of his sword, and a loud ringing sound from the metal clashing resounded.

CLANG!

The sword flew out of his loose grasp; surprise could be seen in his non-existent eyes as he watched it spinning in the air before landing and clattering against the floor.

He immediately jumped back, getting cornered at the edge of the roof. Damien stared at them with cautious eyes.

He analysed how all three of them cut off any sort of escape he could attempt. But what he also noticed was that their weapons were sheathed.

'Do they have no intentions to harm me?'

He narrowed his eyes. Does he trust them or not? Such thoughts occurred in his mind. He knew they were capable of killing him after fighting with them for a while.

Damien's tense body then became relaxed. "I'm going to trust you guys... ." A complicated feeling appeared in his chest. The word "Trust" felt weird to him. "But you better not make me regret this."

The three, seeing he had let down his guard, dashed towards him.

Damien stood still and waited for whatever came next. They neared his body and stretched their arms out towards him.

Damien gazed into their eyes and spotted a green glow emanating from within. Their skinny, rotting fingers seized his body and pulled against him.

And then... something happened that he didn't expect they would do...
