Chapter 3: Her young heart (Part 2)
-Is it here?
-Mhmm-she nodded at my question.
After walking for a while, we ended up in front of a 2 floor house. As soon as I felt her hand trembling under mine, I confirmed that this was the kid's house.
-Let's go.- I pulled her arm while walking towards the house- We gotta do this, don't we?
I saw the indecision in her eyes as I spoke to her. I felt like she wanted to do it, but as anyone could've expected, she wasn't too sure of it. Taking someone else's life is hard already, but doing it as a kid must be even harder.
-Kid, you sure about this?-I kneeled in front of her and patted her shoulder- We can go back if you want.
Some tears fell from her eyes while she looked to the floor. I held her trembling hand and pinched her cheek, just like I did earlier. I couldn't force her to do it, but if she wanted to, then I wanted her to be the calmest she could be.
-Jacob…
-Yeah?
-Will everything be alright once she dies?-she asked while rubbing the bruises on her arms.
I looked quietly at her arms, staring at every scar. There were cuts and burns all over her arms, and I watched them all. Each one of them disgusted me, to the point that it made me hate her aunt a lot, even though I never saw her face.
Shaking my head in denial, I stood up and turned around, beginning to walk to the entrance of the house. The kid may have been a nuisance to me, but after seeing what that woman did to her I changed my opinion on her. Don't get me wrong, I didn't like the kid or anything, I just couldn't stand an asshole like her aunt roaming free in this world.
Once we got in front of the house, I stopped and contemplated it: It was nicely locked, with all the windows and doors severely covered. The entrance would have to be a difficult one if I didn't want to alarm the kid's aunt, so I started to think of the possible ways to get in there. During my brainstorming, the kid tugged at my cape and pointed at the attic's window.
-Over there… It's not entirely locked because we ran out of materials to block it, so it just looks like it's locked.
I don't know if they were smart because they made it look like it was locked or if they were stupid because they left an open entrance, but either way, my entrance was now easier. All I had to do was reach that window, so I started to make my preparations by stretching.
-Ufff… Ok, here we go… -I said as I finished stretching, taking my cape off and putting it on the floor.
-Here we go?-she emphasized the word "we".
-Just as you heard kid, I said "we". -I moved a couple steps back and pointed at my back- Just because I'm doing you a favor, it doesn't mean you don't have to be present you know? You might not want to watch it, but you still have to be there, you know?
She looked hesitant at first, but after a few seconds she hopped right on my back, clinging to it with all her strength. I put the cape over us and once I confirmed that I could lift her bodyweight, I started to climb the wall of her house, holding on to the edges of windows or little holes that I could find.
The extra weight already made climbing difficult, but it got even worse after I ran out of spots to hold on to. This wasn't a random open-world game where I could just climb wherever I wanted by having enough stamina, this was the real world and to be honest, my arms weren't as strong as those of the climbers, so I started to get fatigued quickly.
-Hey kid…-I said while panting-You've noticed the… Huff… The pockets under the cape… Right?
-Yeah? What about them?
-The set of knives… Do you… Remem… Remember them? -I panted while sweat ran down my face.
The kid rummaged through the pockets of the cape and took out one of the throwing knives.
-You mean this?
I nodded while making sounds of effort. I took a deep breath and moved my body to a more comfortable stance, but the fatigue was still there.
-Can you… One of the big ones… Pass me one of the big ones…
She went back to searching through every pocket until she took a big combat knife, which she immediately put carefully in front of my face. The kid seemed like she was waiting for me to talk or to give an order, because she was completely still for many seconds.
-Now what?-she broke the silence.
-Now… Now carve holes… in your wall…
-What?!
-Just do it!
At that moment the agitation on my body made me lose balance on my right foot. I shouted as I felt my body slowly falling backwards, but I somehow managed to hold on to the wall and regain my balance. I clinged to the wall with all my might and thanked it for not letting me fall.
-Jacob, are we going to die?-she asked while looking down. We only climbed a few meters, but we could still get injured badly if we fell, especially her since she was on my back.
-Don't be… A dumbass now…-I sighed as my arms tensed up. Whatever we needed to do, it had to be done quickly.
-Jacob, you sure you want to carve a hole in the wall? It sounds dumb…
-Well… Huff… Any ideas… on how to make… a dramatic entrance?-I panted while trying to talk in a mocking tone.
-Actually… I may have an easier way to get in…
The kid told me to get down while slapping my face. At first I refused, because I didn't want to throw away the effort I made by climbing the wall. I looked at the attic window which was just a few meters away, but seeing the state my body was in I decided to give up and listen to her.
Once we were on the floor I rubbed my face, caressing the parts where she slapped me. She told me to wait for the signal and hide, so I did what she told me while looking at her hesitantly walking to the door. I could sense the nerves on her body from my hiding spot (which was behind the wall I just tried to climb) and immediately knew what her plan was: Using herself as bait. I took out the combat knife and waited for her signal, peeking from my hiding spot.
KNOCK! KNOCK!
The sound of the door invaded the desolate street. At first there was no response from the inside of the house, but after waiting a few seconds, a woman opened the door. I only got a glimpse of her, but I have to say it was probably the most beautiful woman I've ever seen.
-Look who's back…-Her sweet voice said in an irritated tone-I suppose you know what's gonna happen next then…
-I'm sorry auntie…-The kid said while her tears started to fall to the floor.
-You're sorry?-Her aunt gave her a quick slap on her face. The sound it made was even louder than the knocking before.
After seeing that I was convinced: She had to die. The woman then yanked her niece by her hair and pulled her inside the house. Once I heard the kid screaming and the door creaking, I knew that waiting for a signal was pointless, so I rushed to help the kid. I ran to the door, and right before it closed entirely I put my right foot between the door and the doorframe, making that my "dramatic entrance".
-Fuck… That hurt… -I said while opening the door and shaking my foot in pain.
