Chapter 3: Chapter 3: Way of life
A new day has come to this barren land.
The sunlight shone down on Noid's eyes, but he didn't feel warm because of it, he just felt uncomfortable.
It's true that if you're in a bad situation, anything that happens around you can make you angry.
Noid was soon awakened by hunger. This was probably fortunate, because he did not die of exhaustion in his sleep.
This is perhaps a small consolation.
It's hard to imagine that even being able to wake up to see tomorrow is a blessing.
Noid woke up his ally, but neither of them had the energy or mood to chat, just slowly pulling each other forward.
Today, is another harsh day.
After a full meal of water rats, they had to return to a life of wandering, digging up tree bark and weeds to eat.
But today they seem to be lucky.
Because on the brown dirt road, Noid saw horse tracks and wheel tracks.
It's of the carriage.
Seeing these traces, Noid became excited. There were traces of carriages, which meant that there were people. And if the animals had not been slaughtered for food, it meant that they were not refugees. That meant there was food!
And that also means their chance of survival is here!
Noid tried to walk faster, following the tracks of the carriage, but his exhausted body couldn't get any better no matter how hard he tried.
Even so, Noid still worked tirelessly, as if he was on stimulants.
Very quickly, he saw that many refugees had gathered around, all of them following the tracks of the carriage as if they had gone crazy, even if someone fell down exhausted, no one paid any attention.
What a chaotic scene.
After walking for a while, Noid was forced to find a place to rest, but he just stood there to rest, he didn't even sit down.
Noid was afraid that if he sat down, he wouldn't be able to get up again.
His ally also came to stand beside him.
Noid took out the remaining food, divided it in half, and gave it to this person, speaking in a hoarse voice.
"Eat and gain strength, we're almost there."
This person, as usual, just nodded, accepted the food and quietly nibbled.
Noid said it was food, but what he took out was just a dark, soft lump of something. Although he didn't want to know exactly what it was, he knew that this was enough to stave off hunger.
It tasted a bit like corn anyway, he thought.
After filling their stomachs a bit, the two of them set off with hope.
Their footsteps quickened, gradually overtaking the other refugees.
Time passed, from morning to afternoon.
As the sky darkened, the outline of a town was reflected in Noid's pupils.
Noid's dumbfounded face finally changed.
He shed tears.
Finally, he got here.
The place was so close that it seemed like he could reach out and touch it.
Noid glanced behind, the number of refugees compared to this morning had decreased by half.
All of them died before they could touch life.
Noid originally had no feelings towards these strangers. But now he felt a little touched.
Leave this aside.
He needs to live first.
Even selling yourself into slavery is better than starving to death.
Besides, Noid doesn't necessarily have to be a slave.
He carefully pushed aside the thick layers of clothing covering him and took out a few coins.
This is the money that Noid luckily picked up, and he still keeps it to this day.
If he couldn't find a place to spend the money, then there were no more than useless coins.
Luckily, they didn't.
Seeing the coins in Noid's palm, his allies were stunned.
Even this person did not know that Noid had hidden money on him.
However, this person said nothing, nor did he appear greedy.
In any case, now that they had reached town, their cooperation was over. And Noid had no obligation to share that small amount of money.
However, Kain beckoned.
The other person did not understand for a moment, and could only follow him.
Entering the town, the eyes of the surrounding people only glanced at them for a moment before leaving again.
Obviously, the situation of refugees coming here is not rare, so the residents here show such indifference.
Noid found a somewhat run-down restaurant and asked about the prices of the dishes. In the end, the money in his hand could only buy two bowls of soup and a loaf of bread.
"Then give it to me."
Noid reluctantly forced out a smile, the restaurant owner didn't give him any face, just held out his hand.
"Pay first."
The restaurant owner's demeanor seemed very familiar to refugees like Noid. And it seems that many people have cheated.
Noid did not argue, honestly took out the money and placed it in the restaurant owner's hand, not forgetting to plead.
"Please."
"Okay, sit there and wait. The food will be here soon."
The money arrived, the restaurant owner's attitude was much better, and he even showed them to their seats.
Even so, Noid and his allies still kept their distance by choosing the furthest seats. Because just now, when they passed by another customer, that person had covered his nose and looked at them with disgust.
This is understandable, long periods of wandering also lead to hygiene issues being neglected. Noid is used to this, but that doesn't mean others are too.
Both of them sat down at the table, at this moment, his ally opened the mouth.
"I have no money..."
This voice, although hard to hear and hoarse, probably because it had been a long time since he had opened his mouth, Noid still recognized that this was a girl's voice, and a very young one at that.
However, he still pretended not to notice, as if he had not discovered anything.
"It's okay, eat and you'll have the strength to continue living."
After all, they had supported each other through thick and thin for a long time. Kain could not abandon his comrades.
Seeing Noid's sincerity, the girl just bowed her head.
