Chapter 44: Into the Slytherin Lair
There was a Christmas party in the Great Hall, and it looked magnificent.
Beautiful silver Christmas trees adorned the room, and mistletoe and holly decorated the ceiling. The ceiling was enchanted to release warm, dry snowflakes at a touch.
Evan and Harry had just finished their third pudding. Hermione led them out of the grand hall to begin their plan.
Obtaining the hair of Crabbe and Goyle wasn't difficult.
With two cupcakes laced with a sleeping potion, those two were at their mercy.
However, the challenge lay in Evan and Harry hiding them in the hallway closet, ensuring nobody saw, and eventually plucking a few hairs and taking their clothes.
The issue arose when Hermione, Evan insisted, argued that the black hair in her hand was not McGonagall's, but rather from a cat.
"It's impossible, Evan!" Hermione said stubbornly, "I got this from her clothing."
"But her Animagus form is a cat, you have the hair that way because it is almost identical to her, so be cautious."
Finally, after Evan's insistence, the three had to return to the grand hall to seize the chance to obtain hair from someone else.
When they saw Pansy Parkinson rise from the table and head towards Snape, Hermione quickly bumped into her and snatched a bit of her hair before she could react.
As Hermione apologized to her, Evan and Harry saw Snape glare at them with hostility, prompting them to quickly rush to the bathroom without a second to spare.
"This is the best opportunity as students will begin returning after Christmas."
"After drinking it, they will have exactly one hour before returning to themselves. Our plan is flawless; people will only see Crabbe, Goyle, and Parkinson."
Hermione then took the potion and poured it into three goblets.
Her hands trembled as she placed Parkinson's hair into the goblet.
The Polyjuice Potion made a bubbling sound and in a second turned into an unpleasant dark brown color.
"It's up to you," said Hermione.
Harry hastily tossed Goyle's hair, and Evan threw in Crabbe's.
The two goblets began to bubble and fizz. Goyle's turned earthy yellow while Crabbe's became dark brown.
"What do we do now?" Harry inquired.
"Of course, we drink it," Hermione replied nervously.
"Let's hope the taste isn't too dreadful. Cheers!" Evan lifted the goblet and drank it down in one go, then turned and hurried to the nearest bathroom.
The Polyjuice Potion tasted vile; swallowing it, he felt a burning sensation spread through his stomach, fingers, and toes, as if melting.
His skin felt like bubbling hot wax as he collapsed to the floor, watching his hands begin to enlarge, fingers thicken, nails widen, and knuckles bulge like bolts.
As Evan's shoulders stretched, a sharp pain set in.
A tingling sensation on his forehead indicated his head was changing, and as his chest expanded, his robe tore.
It all happened swiftly and stopped abruptly.
Although he had read about this transformation countless times in the book, the feeling of becoming Crabbe was indescribable. Evan effortlessly shed the small uniform and donned Crabbe's clothing. Then he heard Goyle's voice yell.
"Are you both okay?"
"I'm fine," Evan responded in Crabbe's voice.
Evan approached the mirror to see himself; he looked exactly like Crabbe.
Harry and Hermione had also transformed.
"Have you finished looking at each other? We have already wasted more than five minutes of valuable time! Let us go to the Slytherin common room and hope that Malfoy is there."
Then they carefully opened the bathroom door and saw that no one was there.
They then mimicked the movements of the person they were supposed to be.
Under Hermione's leadership, the trio headed towards the Slytherin common room, but they stopped when they saw the person standing in front of them, Snape.
"Good evening, Parkinson, Goyle, and Crabbe," Snape said in a slow, low voice, "What are you doing here?"
"I, we..."
Evan and Harry looked at each other, unsure of what to say,
But Crabbe and Goyle seemed unfazed as usual, Snape ignored them and looked at Hermione with interest.
"Professor, we are returning to the common room," Hermione said cautiously.
"Oh, why?" Snape said softly, "Miss Parkinson, please come to my office later, I believe it is worth discussing a bit about the party."
"But, Professor..." said Harry, unable to continue, as he had no reason to stop Snape from taking Pansy Parkinson.
Evan and Harry watched as Snape led Hermione away.
"Is this also called foolproof?" Harry anxiously asked, "I wonder if she will be okay."
"I think we should stick to the original plan, and when we are done with Malfoy, then we will try to save Hermione," Evan suggested.
"Easy to say, but do you have any idea where the Slytherin common room is?"
Evan shook his head, realizing this dilemma.
The empty dungeon corridor was like a maze, after a quarter of an hour, they were back where they started.
They reached a hallway with three paths they could take, one led to Snape's office, another was where Nearly Headless Nick was celebrating his birthday party, and the third was one they had never passed before. But Evan saw a painting of a silver fruit bowl which should be the secret entrance leading to Hogwarts' kitchen.
"No, I remember this picture, we just saw it, maybe we should go left," Harry said uncertainly.
"No, that leads to the Hufflepuff common room."
Just as the two were filled with despair, they saw Draco Malfoy walking towards them, this was the first time Evan was glad to see him.
"Why are you two standing here, I thought you would be back by now?" Malfoy said.
Evan and Harry nodded, and Malfoy led them to the right side of a damp, empty stone wall.
"What is the new password?" Malfoy asked Harry.
"Well...?" Harry hesitated.
"Oh, yes, it's pure-blood," Malfoy said.
As soon as he uttered those words, they saw an opening slowly form in the wall, and Malfoy entered followed by Evan and Harry.
