Chapter 57: The Evenstar, Space Battle
Alex named the planet Eryndis, a verdant world in the star system Caldaia, as the new home for the elves. From his fleet, he selected one Admiral-class ship, naming it the Evenstar, as his personal flagship.
Four cruisers and ten exploratory vessels accompanied the Evenstar as Alex set out once more, heading for the Milky Way.
"Initiate space jump to the designated coordinate," Alex commanded.
"Yes, Your Majesty," came the synchronized responses from the ship captains. A flash of golden light engulfed the fleet as they initiated a space jump, heading toward a Union-influenced star system.
The fleet emerged near the system's edge, forming a triangular forward formation with the Evenstar leading. The flagship's spearhead design, crafted from crystalline silver, gleamed brilliantly, accentuated by golden lines running along its hull, a mark of elegance and authority.
Inside the Evenstar, Alex sat calmly at the central cockpit. Arwen was beside him, with Lily perched on her shoulder. In front, the navigator and helmsman manned the controls, while to the left, elves monitored the scanner arrays and weapon systems. On the right, engineers and defense specialists maintained the ship's operations.
As the fleet traversed through quantum space, a signal came through the scanners. "Your Majesty, we've detected anomalies ahead," reported the elf at the scanner console. "Several hundred ships are engaged in battle."
"Project visual," Alex replied.
A holographic display materialized, showing a chaotic clash among green Krill ships, Union vessels, and the robotic Kaylon fleet. The Kaylons appeared to be the aggressors, overwhelming the others with superior firepower.
"Set course to Earth and hold position in orbit," Alex instructed. "Intercept any Kaylon or Krill ships attempting to approach the planet."
As the fleet exited quantum near Earth's orbit, alarms blared across Union Central.
"Alert! Unidentified ships have entered Earth's orbit," a lieutenant announced.
"Get visual and power up planetary defenses," Admiral Perry ordered.
"That won't be necessary," Ed Mercer's voice interjected over the communicator. "They're friends."
Even as the Union forces assessed the situation, several Kaylon ships broke away from the main battle and sped toward Earth. The Union forces, including the Orville, scrambled to intercept but were outmatched. Plasma fire tore through Union vessels, leaving only the Orville and one other ship in pursuit.
"Two cruisers, intercept," Alex commanded.
Two sleek cruisers detached from the formation, accelerating toward the Kaylon ships. Golden shields shimmered as the cruisers withstood a barrage of plasma fire.
Undeterred, they returned precise volleys of particle cannon fire, systematically dismantling the Kaylon ships. Within moments, the immediate threat to Earth was neutralized, and the cruisers rejoined the fray.
Onboard the Orville, John LaMarr watched in awe. "They don't even bother dodging!"
"Must be confident about their defenses," Captain Mercer replied.
The Kaylon fleet began to falter under the relentless assault. Observing their movements, Alex anticipated their retreat. "Charge the particle cannon," he ordered. "Target their retreat point."
The Evenstar's spear-like prow opened to reveal a massive cannon muzzle glowing with golden energy. As the retreating Kaylons regrouped, the cannon unleashed a focused beam.
The golden light tore through the Kaylon formation, destroying dozens of ships in an instant. Only a few managed to escape into quantum.
"Your Majesty, we're receiving communication requests from Union Central and the Orville," reported the elf at the scanner array.
"Answer them," Alex said calmly.
Admiral Halsey appeared on the screen. "Thank you for your assistance, Your Excellency."
"You're welcome. It was a matter of convenience," Alex replied with a polite smile.
Captain Mercer's face replaced Halsey's. "What was that weapon, Alex? It gave us goosebumps."
"Just a cannon," Alex said with a grin. "Nothing special."
"Just a cannon? That beam could probably destroy a planet," John LaMarr commented offscreen.
Alex laughed. "How about you come aboard the Evenstar?" Alex paused, "and, bring that special Kaylon friend of yours."
As the communication ended, Arwen turned to Alex. "Is the Kaylon you mentioned really a robot?"
"Yes," Alex replied. "He's unique, gaining emotion despite being a machine. I plan to offer him a choice, to remain as he is or become human."
Lily, who had been unusually quiet, let out a small sigh. "I'm bored. Can I go inside Mín Heimr? I miss my friends."
Alex smiled and extended his hand. "As you wish, my lady."
With a giggle, Lily leaped from Arwen's shoulder and disappeared into Alex's ring.
