Chapter 58: The Gift of Life
As the crew of the Orville boarded the Evenstar, they were met by Alex and Arwen, standing calmly in the medical bay. In the center of the room, Isaac's deactivated body lay on a sleek medical bed surrounded by elf medics. The Orville crew exchanged uncertain glances, taking in the room's futuristic design and the elves' calm efficiency.
"Sir, can you fix him?" Dr. Claire Finn asked, her voice tinged with hope and concern.
Alex shook his head. "I will not fix him."
The blunt response left the Orville crew stunned. No one spoke as Alex approached Isaac's body. With a wave of his hand, the elf medics stepped back, and Alex leaned over Isaac. Carefully, he opened the robotic head and extracted a glowing blue orb.
"What is that?" Captain Ed Mercer asked, breaking the tense silence.
"This is his soul," Alex said, holding the orb afloat.
"What?!" Gordon Malloy blurted. "He's an AI! AIs don't have souls!"
"Ordinarily, that would be true," Alex replied. "But Isaac is... unique. His soul formed recently, likely due to something he wasn't designed to understand." He paused, glancing at Dr. Finn and her sons. "Emotion."
Dr. Finn's breath hitched, and she exchanged a glance with her children, who were standing by her side.
The crew of the Orville stood in shocked silence as Alex closed his eyes and raised his free hand. Energy began to radiate from him, forming intricate patterns of light that coalesced into a humanoid shape. Bones materialized first, followed by muscles, organs, and finally skin.
"Are we seriously watching Isaac being... born?" John LaMarr whispered to Gordon.
"I think I'm gonna need therapy every time I see him now," Gordon muttered.
Finally, the new body took shape, resembling Isaac's humanoid form from his simulation. Alex gently pressed the glowing orb into the figure's forehead. The room fell silent as seconds passed. Then, the body drew a deep, shuddering breath.
Isaac's eyes fluttered open, and he looked at his hands in wonder. "I am... breathing. How peculiar. Is this how biologicals perceive the world?"
Dr. Finn rushed forward, pulling Isaac into a hug. "Isaac!" she exclaimed, her voice breaking. Her son Tyson joined her, clinging to Isaac with teary eyes.
Isaac awkwardly returned the embrace, his movements uncertain but growing more natural. "This physical form is... satisfactory, thank you." he said to Alex.
Ed Mercer stepped forward, shaking his head in amazement. "Alex, I don't even know what to say. Are you a god?"
Alex exchanged a knowing glance with Arwen before replying, "Maybe."
As the Evenstar descended into Earth's atmosphere, the ship's immense size and radiant design drew the attention of every observer. It hovered gracefully in Union Central Square, causing no damage or disturbance to the ground, defying expectations.
"Man, if one of our ships tried that, it'd probably crash," Kelly Grayson remarked.
"Ship density seems unusually low," Bortus commented.
When Alex, Arwen, and their elf security personnel disembarked alongside the crew of the Orville, the crowd erupted into murmurs and exclamations.
"Are those... elves?"
"They look like they just stepped out of a fantasy novel!"
"Do you think they're single?"
"I'd marry an elf in a heartbeat!"
The buzz of excitement grew louder as Alex and Arwen made their way to the Planetary Union leadership.
Facing the Union leadership, Alex made his proposal. "I offer two of my cruisers to aid your defense forces. They will only be used for defensive purposes. In return, I request that you allow a team of my elf scientists with their own exploratory vessel to join your exploratory missions. Let some of them join the Union crew to study your culture and your allies."
Admiral Halsey exchanged a glance with his colleagues before turning back to Alex. "We accept your terms and welcome your assistance."
As the fleet prepared to depart Earth, Arwen looked at Alex curiously. "Why leave scientists here? Don't you already know all about them?"
Alex smiled. "I do. And that knowledge is stored in the central computer of the elf colony. But it will only be unlocked if they gather enough data on their own. They were created to explore, and that will be their purpose."
Arwen nodded thoughtfully as they returned to the Evenstar.
With the Evenstar, two cruisers, and five exploratory vessels, Alex initiated the journey to his primary universe. They arrived in Mars's orbit, where Alex instructed the fleet to remain on standby.
Teleporting back to their Los Angeles villa, Alex and Arwen were greeted by the familiar warmth of home. As Arwen settled in, Alex gazed out at the horizon, thinking about historical data about reckless Planetary Union explorations that had interacted with low-level civilizations and caused apocalypses.
He noted that due to capitalism's dominance on these planets, divided societies waged war on each other, destroying their planets and obliterating life instead of uniting to achieve interstellar progress.
Alex reflected on the futility of forcefully uniting Earth in his main universe and giving them interstellar technology. Such unity would likely fracture over time, leading to eventual collapse. The only viable path to global unity, he surmised, might be the emergence of a common external threat, a world-ending enemy from another planet.
