Chapter 1279: Cosmoem’s Terrifying Defense
Although Yuga was delighted with the twenty Treecko newly gifted by the League, what happened next was not so cheerful.
After years of raising numerous Pokémon in the Ecopark, apart from the passing of the elderly Togekiss clan leader at the very beginning, other Pokémon had finally begun to succumb to the natural cycles of life.
The deaths started in the new Ecopark.
The new Ecopark was where Yuga housed and cared for Pokémon with lower potential. When Yuga convinced certain groups of Pokémon to enter the Ecopark, some of these groups already included elderly Pokémon, such as those from the Elektross and Tynamo group.
Yuga couldn't just abandon these aged Pokémon, so he settled them in the new Ecopark. Over time, as was inevitable, Pokémon in the new Ecopark began to pass away one after another.
In addition, some species with inherently short lifespans also started to reach the end of their lives. This included Pokémon like Vivillon, Beautifly, and Dustox.
Whenever a Pokémon passed away, Yuga had to find someone to take them to the Pokémon Tower for burial.
However, as Yuga didn't share a deep bond with these Pokémon, after making two such trips, he realized this was bound to happen more frequently in the future. Running back and forth every time would be unsustainable, so he decided to hire someone to take on the responsibility.
Thus, when an elderly Beautifly in the new Ecopark passed away again, Yuga posted a job notice at the entrance of the YoYo Day Care.
Beautifly is a species with a naturally short lifespan. Combined with the low potential of the ones in the new Ecopark, and their particularly low levels, it was only normal for some to pass away.
The average lifespan of a level 10–20 Beautifly with red or orange potential is only 2–4 years.
The recently deceased Beautifly had the lowest red potential. Its potential had been so poor since birth that it couldn't be sold. At that time, Yuga hadn't yet established partnerships with smaller Pokémon Day Care, so it ended up staying in the new Ecopark.
The living conditions in the new Ecopark were decent, but this particular Beautifly wasn't very diligent. It passed away shortly after reaching three years of age.
Yuga had a considerable number of Beautifly, Vivillon, and Dustox in his care. These species were highly prolific, so although this was just the beginning, the number of deceased Pokémon was bound to increase over time.
As a result, Yuga decided to hire a dedicated part-time employee at the YoYo Day Care to handle the task of taking deceased Pokémon to the Pokémon Tower.
When Uncle Kate from next door saw Yuga's job notice, he immediately remarked that Yuga was wasting money. He offered to handle the task during his spare time for free, saying there was no need to hire someone else.
However, Yuga declined. Uncle Kate was already busy with his regular work. Asking him to spend extra time running to the Pokémon Tower would not only delay his primary duties but also tire him out unnecessarily.
Yuga understood that Uncle Kate was simply eager to help. In his free time, he frequently came over to the day care and the gym to lend a hand.
Uncle Kate was, in fact, considered an employee of the YoYo Day Care. He was deeply grateful for the work opportunities Yuga had provided him.
Initially, Yuga had hired Uncle Kate to craft Sharp Fangs. As the YoYo Day Care's business flourished, the demand for Sharp Fangs grew, and so did Uncle Kate's income.
Thanks to this job, Uncle Kate's family enjoyed an improved quality of life, and he was able to provide better support for his son, who was training to become a Pokémon Trainer.
Later, Yuga acquired the crafting method for Razor Claws from the system store. He also entrusted this work to Uncle Kate, further increasing his wages.
Since both the crafting methods and raw materials were supplied by Yuga, Uncle Kate was essentially an employee earning a salary for his services at the YoYo Day Care.
Because crafting Sharp Fangs and Sharp Claws was not an easy task, Yuga offered Uncle Kate a very high salary—almost comparable to what a mid-level manager at a large company like Devon Corporation would earn.
Given such a high-quality job opportunity, Uncle Kate naturally felt deeply grateful toward Yuga. However, Yuga thought it wasn't necessary for Uncle Kate to handle any additional tasks for him. After all, this job could be given to anyone. Uncle Kate had not only saved Yuga's life but had also been a longtime friend and neighbor to the family, and his character was beyond reproach. Why let an opportunity like this benefit an outsider?
Besides, the job was indeed quite exhausting. Yuga wasn't comfortable entrusting the crafting of Sharp Fangs and Sharp Claws to anyone else, so he felt Uncle Kate was the most suitable person for the role.
Uncle Kate was visibly disappointed when he couldn't take on more responsibilities to help Yuga, leaving Yuga both amused and helpless.
Ultimately, the person who took up the task of delivering Pokémon to the Pokémon Tower was Kano's younger brother, Shuuya.
Kano and her brother Shuuya were both orphans from the Forest Home Orphanage. After working at YoYo Day Care for a while and saving up some money, Kano brought her brother out of the orphanage.
Previously, Shuuya was under ten years old, so Kano had no way to bring him out. But once he turned ten, she immediately went to retrieve him so they could live together.
Now, the siblings rented a house and lived a good life.
Kano used to live in the employee dormitory provided by YoYo Day Care, but after she brought Shuuya out of the orphanage, she rented her own place. After all, Shuuya wasn't an employee of YoYo Day Care and couldn't live in the dormitory.
Kano was an incense maker, a rare talent, so Yuga paid her a generous salary, more than enough to support her and her brother.
Kano's biggest wish now was to buy a house of her own so that she and her brother could have their own home. She worked very hard toward this goal.
After their life improved, Kano considered supporting Shuuya in becoming a Trainer, but Shuuya refused. Seeing his resolve, Kano gave up trying to persuade him.
Shuuya had once dreamed of becoming a Trainer, but seeing how hard his sister worked every day, he secretly abandoned the idea.
He wanted to start earning money as soon as possible to help ease his sister's burden.
Although Shuuya hadn't reached adulthood, he was already ten years old and could take on some part-time jobs. Recently, he had been secretly looking for work without telling his sister.
Because he liked Pokémon, Shuuya often visited the Pokémon Paradise to play with the stray Pokémon whenever he came to see his sister at the day care. That's how he happened to see the job notice Yuga had posted outside the store.
Yuga remembered Shuuya well. Back when Kano was hesitant to leave the Forest Home because she worried about her brother being alone in the orphanage, it was sensible Shuuya who personally convinced his sister and even came to plead with Yuga for help.
When Yuga saw Shuuya again, he immediately recognized him. Compared to their first meeting, Shuuya had grown much taller.
Yuga had a favorable impression of Shuuya. When he learned that the boy wanted to apply for the job of delivering Pokémon to the Pokémon Tower, he informed Kano. With her consent, he hired Shuuya.
At first, Kano was surprised to learn that Shuuya was looking for part-time work. But after understanding his reasons, she was moved and agreed, knowing that her brother cared about her and wanted to ease her burden.
Seeing the siblings' bond, Yuga sighed, "Children from poor families grow up early!"
The Pokémon Tower wasn't far from Verdanturf Town, and delivering Pokémon there wasn't a dangerous task. Shuuya was perfectly capable of handling it.
After confirming Shuuya's employment, Yuga took him to meet the Great Flygon.
"When you go to the Pokémon Tower, you'll ride the Flygon. It flies fast and is strong enough to protect you along the way," Yuga introduced the Pokémon to Shuuya.
The Great Flygon was crouched on the ground and politely nodded at Shuuya.
Yuga had already discussed the arrangement with it, and it didn't mind taking on this new job. Besides, this wasn't a daily task; it would only happen occasionally.
"Th-thank you!" Shuuya, a natural Pokémon enthusiast, was both thrilled and excited to meet the Great Flygon.
The Great Flygon was the captain of YoYo Day Care's aerial patrol team and often flew over Verdanturf Town. Many residents recognized it, including Shuuya.
Since his sister was an employee at the YoYo Day Care, Shuuya was well aware of the prowess of Flygon. Now that he had the opportunity to ride such a powerful Pokémon for work, he was beyond thrilled, imagining how envious others would be.
After seeing the initial rapport between Shuuya and Flygon, Yuga said, "Go ahead and try riding Flygon first. Once you're comfortable, you can start the actual work."
Shuuya nodded eagerly and, under Yuga's guidance, climbed onto Flygon with a mixture of excitement and nervousness.
While Yuga usually rode Pokémon without special equipment, Shuuya wasn't a Trainer, and Flygon wasn't his Pokémon. Their lack of synchronization prompted Yuga to prioritize safety by custom-ordering a riding harness.
Shuuya proved to be quite courageous. With the harness providing security, he quickly adapted to soaring through the sky on Flygon.
When Yuga saw that Shuuya was ready, he took him to where the deceased Beautifly had been placed. Gesturing to the wooden coffin containing Beautifly's body, Yuga instructed, "Please take care of Beautifly. After burying it, ask the monks there to recite a prayer for its blessing."
Although Yuga wasn't particularly superstitious, it was customary for people to have prayers recited when laying a Pokémon to rest. Following tradition, Yuga had done the same during his previous visits.
"Got it. Don't worry, I'll take care of it," Shuuya replied obediently.
After ensuring Shuuya understood, Yuga watched as the young boy mounted Flygon. The Pokémon then grabbed the wooden coffin with ease and took off into the sky.
The coffin had been specially crafted on Yuga's request, so Flygon had no trouble carrying it.
Once Shuuya was on his way, Yuga returned to the shop. The moment he stepped inside, a small figure floated toward him. Upon closer inspection, he realized it was none other than Cosmoem.
"Cosmoem, you're awake!" Yuga exclaimed in delight. After such a long slumber, Cosmoem was finally awake.
"Cosmoem~ Cosmoem~!"
Cosmoem circled around Yuga joyfully, clearly brimming with energy.
Relieved to see Cosmoem as lively as ever, Yuga felt reassured. Although his Insight ability still couldn't fully discern Cosmoem's stats, the sheer pressure it unintentionally emitted spoke volumes about its tremendous growth in power.
Excited to show off its strength, Cosmoem eagerly began demonstrating its abilities. However, since it only knew Teleport and Cosmic Power, it flashed around Yuga with rapid Teleportation, moving so quickly that Yuga could barely keep up.
While Teleport was an incredibly convenient move, it was also notoriously draining—otherwise, Pokémon that could use Teleport would dominate competitive arenas. Yet, for Cosmoem, using Teleport had always been effortless. Yuga had never seen it tire from using the move.
Even so, the current Cosmoem's Teleport was on a whole new level compared to before.
Previously, after using Teleport once, Cosmoem would have to pause for a few seconds before being able to use it again. But now, it seemed to require no pause at all. Its movements were completely seamless, flashing from place to place without any noticeable delay—it was almost unbelievable how smooth it had become.
At that moment, Mewtwo appeared beside Yuga. Recently, Mewtwo had needed certain materials and equipment for its experiments, so it had come to ask Yuga to purchase them on its behalf.
When Yuga saw Mewtwo, an idea suddenly struck him. "Mewtwo, how about sparring with Cosmoem?"
Spar with this little thing? Mewtwo stared blankly at Cosmoem, which Yuga had pointed to, for a good while.
Cosmoem, however, was delighted upon hearing this. It had always trained alone through meditation and had rarely, if ever, sparred with other Pokémon.
Mewtwo gave Yuga a glance. Although it couldn't quite understand what Yuga was planning, it nodded in agreement. After all, it was just an employee of sorts, and if the boss gave an order, it had to comply.
So, Yuga took Cosmoem and Mewtwo to the Eesert Sub-Ecopark.
Given Mewtwo's immense destructive power, the desert was the safest place for a battle.
In the desert, fierce winds swept up clouds of yellow sand as Mewtwo and Cosmoem floated in mid-air, facing each other.
Mewtwo didn't know that Cosmoem only had two support moves—Teleport and Cosmic Power. Seeing Cosmoem remaining completely motionless, it was puzzled but decided to make the first move.
Mewtwo extended both of its hands, forming a Shadow Ball in the palm of each hand, and hurled them one after the other toward Cosmoem. However, Cosmoem's figure flickered twice, easily dodging the Shadow Balls.
Seeing this, Mewtwo was slightly surprised. Its interest in Cosmoem was piqued, so it created two more Shadow Balls and threw them again.
But Cosmoem's Teleport was far too fast and seamless, leaving Mewtwo unable to land a hit. Although Mewtwo couldn't understand why Cosmoem wasn't counterattacking, it found itself becoming increasingly serious as the battle went on.
While Cosmoem's Teleport was impressive, Mewtwo wasn't without options to counter it. First, it used Miracle Eye on Cosmoem, then followed up with an Aura Sphere.
Yuga's Cosmoem was a mutant Pokémon—not a pure Psychic-type but a dual Psychic/Ghost-type. Without the use of Miracle Eye, Fighting-type moves like Aura Sphere would have been ineffective against it.
Aura Sphere is a guaranteed-hit move, so not even Cosmoem's Teleport could evade it.
Boom!
A loud explosion echoed through the desert. When the dust settled, Mewtwo stared in shock—Cosmoem was completely unharmed, and its mouth fell open in disbelief.
Even a Level 100 Pokémon would struggle to endure such an attack unscathed, yet Cosmoem was perfectly fine!
It turned out that during its repeated dodges, Cosmoem had already used Cosmic Power multiple times, raising both its Defense and Special Defense to their maximum potential.
Yuga, witnessing this, was equally astonished. He had thought Cosmoem's Teleport was outrageous enough, but its defensive capabilities were on an entirely different level of absurdity.
Unconvinced, Mewtwo fired several more Aura Spheres in rapid succession at Cosmoem.
Seeing that dodging was futile, Cosmoem simply stopped moving altogether, floating still and allowing Mewtwo to attack at will. In the end, it only sustained minor injuries, which were easily treated.
Yuga now had a clear understanding of just how exaggerated Cosmoem's defensive power was.
