Chapter 10 - Bullying the Newbie
Even if I had become a woman, I didn’t want to wear a skirt.
Of course, it wasn’t like I’d rather die than wear one.
If the only uniform left at the store was a skirt or if there was a rule that I absolutely had to wear a skirt, I’d force myself to wear it.
Though I’d probably feel the urge to smoke that day.
“Hello…. My name is Lee Su-yeon, and I’m new here! I have plenty of experience working at cafes, so I’d appreciate it if you weren’t too worried! The manager has assigned me to the counter and serving!”
“Oh… yes… I’m Yoon Si-ha…! This is my first time working at a cafe… I’ve been here for about a month…!”
“Yes! Looking forward to working with you!”
I extended my hand for a handshake to the young man in front of me. He grabbed my hand and shook it mechanically, like a machine.
“Senior! Three iced Americanos, please!”
“Y-Yes!”
It seemed the manager wasn’t kidding about being short on staff; the place was bustling.
“Welcome! Can I help you with your order?”
“Um… yes… two chocolate shortcakes… and two hot lattes, please.”
“Would you like latte art with that?”
“Uh? Yes… please.”
“Two chocolate shortcakes! I’ll handle the lattes!”
Finally, the line ended, and no more customers seemed to be coming in.
I hurried to make the two lattes, preparing for the latte art. There were still some orders that hadn’t been served, and the senior would soon finish the iced americanos.
Focusing as much as I could, I slowly poured white milk into the well-made lattes, drawing two cats.
“I’ll go serve them now!”
I balanced the tray filled with drinks and food, moving carefully so nothing spilled.
As I walked to the tables, I mentally reviewed what food and drinks went where.
“Here are the hot chocolate and smoothie you ordered!”
A couple looked at me strangely, but I continued serving and going around the café, busy with my tasks.
“The newbie works really well! I might have to consider a bonus!”
“Thank you!”
The manager, aware of how busy the café was, had come out of the break room to help out at the counter.
As the rush of customers died down, the café grew more peaceful.
“Wow, it feels like we had twice as many customers all of a sudden.”
“Does it?”
“Of course! Our café normally doesn’t get this busy! Si-ha, you did well too.”
“Yeah…”
I had to admit, there were quite a few customers on my first day.
“Don’t be so down, Senior!”
“Um… Can I change how I address you…? No matter how I think about it, it feels like you’re my senior, Su-yeon.”
“Hmm? Even if it’s just a month, you’re still the senior! And you don’t have to be so formal, just call me casually.”
There was a time at my first part-time job when someone who had started just a few days before me demanded to be called ‘senior.’ They bullied me to the point that I thought they were really awful… It was good I quit early back then…
“O-Okay… then, noona!”
I froze for a moment, lost in thought, when I heard something strange. Surely, that wasn’t directed at me?
“…..”
I looked over at the manager, thinking maybe Si-ha had called her, but there was no response.
“Noona…?”
The strange feeling grew as I heard it again.
“…Me?”
“Did you not like it?”
“…My age…”
“I’m 18.”
No one had ever called me “noona” before. People who came after me always addressed me as “hyung,” “senior,” or “oppa.”
You could say it was similar to my younger sister calling me “unnie,” but it felt completely different.
“…Just call me what you said earlier.”
“O-Okay, senior!”
“…”
“This is fun. Since we’re not busy, should we eat something?”
“Yes… Manager, do you have a spare hair tie?”
My hair, which reached down to my waist, was bothering me.
It kept getting in my way, and there was even a moment when I almost dipped my hair into a drink while making it.
“Here, just have some cup noodles for now.”
“Thank you.”
I grabbed a black hair tie, remembering how I used to tie my younger sister’s hair, and began tying my own hair.
Snap-
“Huh?”
Since it had been a while, I messed up twice. While I was struggling, I heard the shutter of a camera from beside me.
I looked over to see a customer, wide-eyed, as if they had startled themselves.
“I-I’m so sorry! It’s just… you’re so pretty, unnie…! If you don’t like it, I’ll delete the photo!”
Snap-
I finally succeeded in tying my hair into a ponytail.
“Eh? I don’t mind the photo. You don’t have to delete it.”
“Thank you!”
The customer bowed deeply before returning to their seat.
After a quick lunch, the number of customers inexplicably increased again, and the café filled up with people.
For some reason, even while I worked, I kept receiving numerous requests for photos.
The manager, though shocked, couldn’t hide her smile, and the poor, overwhelmed Si-ha worked hard.
By the time the line reached almost out the door, I thought to myself, “Quitting after just one day would be a bit much, right…?”
It was 3 p.m. when the next shift workers came in with expressions difficult to describe.
Finally, we were able to clock out.
“On your way out, could you take the trash to the back door?”
The manager shouted her last request as we hurried around the counter, so Si-ha and I each grabbed a black trash bag and went outside.
“Wow… There’s a lot today…”
“Yeah, no kidding…”
We threw the trash into the large bins, exchanged goodbyes, and I started walking home.
“Ugh…”
It had been a while since I’d worked, so both my arms were trembling, but I stopped by the market on my way home for my empty fridge.
There was almost no food left at home, so I grabbed a cart and wandered the aisles.
“Hmm~”
As usual, I listened to music through my earphones while picking out suitable ingredients.
“Whoa… Sale!”
I stuffed my cart with bean sprouts that were on a buy-one-get-one sale and moved on. Bean sprouts were versatile.
You could blanch them and eat them with simple seasonings or toss them into ramen.
Next, I picked up some frozen shrimp.
“Hmm… 20 pieces…”
Calculating the cost in my head, I added them to my cart and headed for the checkout.
My younger sibling’s favorite food was fried shrimp.
When we were kids, when we lived with our grandparents, it was hard to come by seafood because we lived in the mountains.
For my sibling’s birthday, Dad drove us for hours to a seafood restaurant.
That’s when my sibling fell in love with shrimp and seafood…
For the record, I hated seafood.
It wasn’t an allergy or anything; I just had a strong aversion to it.
There’s a family secret that, at that restaurant, I avoided eating until I finally took one bite and threw up immediately.
But there is something I hate even more.
“Hmm… 40,000 won…”
I had bought only what I needed, avoiding unnecessary purchases, but I still ended up spending more than expected.
I sighed as I walked home.
When I got home, I spent some time putting the groceries away in the fridge.
“…I guess I got good value?”
It was, indeed, great value.
The fried rice I had yesterday kept me from feeling too hungry even after a busy day at work, and the ramen I had earlier didn’t feel too heavy.
At this rate, one meal a day should be enough.
“…Saved on food costs.”
Having discovered the second benefit of this new body, I was changing clothes when my phone rang.
“Hmm…”
I quickly finished changing and picked up the call.
“Hello?”
-Su-yeon, it’s me.
“Mom? What’s up?”
-I was worried about you, so I called.
“I’m fine. I even worked a part-time job earlier. Maybe because of my unusual appearance, we had a lot of customers, so I might even get a bonus.”
-That’s good to hear… anything else different?
“Hmm… My hair is too long, and it’s annoying. I used to cut it myself, but it’s too long for me to handle now.”
-Go to a salon and get it trimmed. There are plenty of good ones in Seoul, aren’t there?
“Alright. I’ll go sometime this week.”
-Okay… let’s meet up sometime soon.
“Alright. Call me if anything comes up.”
-We’re fine here. I’ll hang up now… my daughter.
“…Don’t make it so awkward… you’re making me feel awkward too.”
Click-
“…Hah…”
I let out a deep sigh and sat down at my computer.
There wasn’t anything in particular I needed to do, but fiddling with the computer was better than going out for a smoke.
“…Ah, right, the stream…”
Last night’s stream had only one viewer, and it wasn’t particularly interesting.
But I wasn’t about to give up after just one day, so I turned the stream on again.
It was 4:50 p.m., and I started a stream that I would end in an hour and ten minutes.
Since last night, a small fire had been ignited in the Lesik (Legendary Six) community, “Siege.”
The well-known user, Aroalo, had sparked a small controversy that quickly grew, fueled by a stream replay.
Users were discussing a streamer named “Baraa,” with various opinions.
Some claimed to have played against Baraa, a platinum-level player, multiple times, though the streamer had never used a microphone, so no one knew their identity.
A few platinum users confirmed that Baraa had indeed been absent for a month, lending weight to Aroalo’s claims.
The second issue concerned the voice in the stream replay.
Some users said they followed immediately after hearing it, while others, skeptical that such a voice could exist, speculated that it might be artificially altered.
However, since the voice only spoke for less than 30 seconds over a 30-minute stream, it was hard to make a clear judgment.
As the debate continued, a notification popped up.
“Baraa has started a live broadcast!”
