Chapter 11 - Bullying the Newbie
Su-yeon turned on the broadcast, poured herself a glass of water, and drank it while looking at the screen.
“Slurp… hmm?”
The numbers she saw after removing the cup from her view were a bit strange.
Viewers: 72
Compared to yesterday, the number of viewers surged as soon as the broadcast started.
“Cough…!”
She almost spat out the water she was drinking due to the sudden flood of attention.
“….Gulp….”
She managed to swallow the water without spraying it on the monitor, wiped her lips, and checked the viewer count again.
124 viewers.
What is this? Is this another raid? Did a famous streamer send people to my small channel? Or did I do something yesterday?
No matter how hard she thought about it, all she did yesterday was play some games, host Chocoa’s stream, and then watch her broadcast.
Even as her thoughts were scattered, the chat window was scrolling up quickly.
– Is this the right place? He’s not saying anything though?
– Didn’t we hear something just now???
– Say something, dude.
Aroalo- Yeah, this is the right place.
Ah, that person. The one who asked yesterday if it was my first time streaming and didn’t say anything after that.
“…Um… Can you hear me?”
He placed the cup in the corner of the desk, put on her headset, and spoke into the small microphone.
– ???!
– Woah, what did I just hear?
– Is this real? Say something again!
– Sounds like a voice mod, lol. The quality is trash, too, haha.
– LOL, do you think that sound can be made with a program? LOL, that’s wild.
– Haha, bet that’s a 30-year-old dude if we turn on the camera.
What is this?
I just said one word, and they’re already dividing into sides and fighting.
“……Don’t fight. Why are you fighting?”
– Wow, she really talked.
– Obviously because of you, haha. Using something fancy, but the sound quality is terrible, lol. Just quit.
– Are you using a headset? Why is the sound quality so bad?
– If it’s real, those idiots wouldn’t just sit there quietly without saying anything.
– These idiots are just going crazy. Just ask, damn it.
“Sound quality? Yeah, I’m using a headset. It’s a pretty expensive one, actually.”
– Really? How much?
“60,000 won.”
For Su-yeon, who had lived a rather frugal life, that was a lot of money. Really.
– ????
– Poor much?
– This concept is insane, lol.
“…Oh… Aroalo… Thank you for the follow?”
Even though she gained her first follower, the chat was still filled with people fighting. As the nurse had mentioned before, it seemed people really liked her voice. However, she hadn’t expected this kind of reaction.
They were arguing about whether or not her voice was real… There sure were a lot of gullible people in the world.
“…It’s not a program. My voice has just changed a bit compared to before, but is it that pleasant to hear?”
– Yeah, it’s really good.
– Obviously, she poured a lot of money into it and is acting all high and mighty, lol.
– If this is real, it’s legendary.
“Money… I don’t have that kind of money. I’m struggling to live as it is…”
Aroalo has donated 1,000 won!
Do you not know what’s happening in the community right now?
“Community…? Siege? I don’t really follow it… But your name sounds familiar…”
“Huh…? 1,000 won…?”
Someone donated 1,000 won? To me?
Chocoa’s stream doesn’t get that many donations. A few small donations of 1,000 or 10,000 won here and there—it’s more of a hobby that brings in a little income. But someone donated to me?
“Uh… th-thank you?”
– her reaction makes me want to turn on the camera.
– For real.
– This chick is acting so well, haha. Did you practice?
“…Why are you all being like this toward me?”
– Because it’s disgusting to watch some basement-dwelling loser, a computer-addicted bum, act all fake.
Aroalo- Ugh
– That’s over the line.
– Yeah, man, that’s too much. Self-criticism is one thing, but this?
“Hmm… So you’re saying I have to prove my voice is real?”
– Do it if you can, lol.
“…Sigh… Should I just not bother…”
Why am I even getting involved in this? Why is that person so mad at me, cursing me out like this? Is what they said really the reason?
– No, no, don’t leave.
– Are you leaving after just 30 minutes today too?
“Uh… I’ll probably stop at 6 o’clock, as usual.”
I need to watch my favorite streamer.
– Got plans?
“No, I finished work already.”
– What do you do for work? Are you a voice actor?
– Voice actor, lol. Just a bum sitting around, like I said.
“I work part-time at a café. Today was my first day.”
– Where do you work??
– Lol, calm down, dude’s ready to rush there.
“…It’s in Seoul, but I won’t say more than that.”
– But really, it’s hard to believe you’re human based on your voice.
– For real, lol.
– Ah~ I want to turn on the camera.
– Don’t say that out loud, you fool.
“Camera…? You mean a webcam?”
Didn’t Chocoa use one the other day?
– Yeah.
Aroalo- Excuse me, sir… I’m from Lesik RO_… Could you add me as a friend…?
“Huh? For real?”
Aroalo- I’m serious, sir. I’m in the game right now.
– You’re always there, lol.
– Yeah, you’re like a ghost, lol.
“I’ll do it later. Is my sound quality really that bad?”
I had spent a lot of money on this headset, thinking it was worth it. At first, I was using the basic keyboard and mouse that came with my PC. It hurt my ears and wasn’t very comfortable, but since I was mostly working and sleeping, I didn’t find it too inconvenient. Later, though, my ears started to hurt more, and I couldn’t hear Chocoa’s voice well, so I bought one with good reviews.
– The sound quality feels like you’re in a cheap internet café, but your voice is carrying the whole thing.
– That metaphor, though.
– He’s using bad equipment on purpose so the voice mod doesn’t get exposed, haha.
– What are you even saying? He’s just spouting nonsense to stir things up.
– Right, lol. Just shut up and admit it.
“…Hmm…”
I watched them argue for about 40 minutes. As expected, the best entertainment is watching people fight, and time flew by. Still, the small screen now showed 188 viewers, splitting into sides and tearing each other apart.
“If I plan on streaming more, I’ll think about buying a mic. But are those expensive?”
– Plan on streaming more? Are you quitting?
– She’s already thinking of quitting, haha. What a loser mindset.
– Mics are expensive, but a decent one is 100,000 to 200,000 won?
“Whew… What about a webcam? Is it that expensive too…?”
I had only ever watched other people stream, so I didn’t realize how much money went into it.
“I don’t know if I’ll quit… My little sister recommended this, and I’m just trying it out. I’m not sure if I’ll keep doing it.”
– Little sister?
– Little sister is a god! Little sister is a god!
– How old is your sister?
“He’s a high school sophomore.”
– ?? I didn’t expect that.
– How old are you, Baraa?
– Hey, wake up, you idiots, haha. There’s a creepy old man breathing heavily in the background.
“I’m 21. I’m not an old man.”
– If you got a better mic and streamed properly, I think you’d blow up.
“…Do streamers make a lot of money?”
– Haha, why are you acting like you don’t know, lol? The concept is so dumb.
“Sigh… Please stop.”
– Huh? Are you mad? Why are you mad? Are you angry because someone called you a scammer and exposed you?
Why am I doing this? Why do I need to keep streaming while getting cursed out and called a scammer by people I don’t even know? It was hard to find an answer, no matter how seriously I thought about it.
“What do I need to do to make you believe me?”
– Figure it out yourself, lol. Or turn on your webcam. What, are you scared?
I was getting annoyed. What did I do to deserve such harsh words from this person? If they didn’t like me, couldn’t they just leave? They reminded me of the annoying drunks I used to deal with during my late-night convenience store shifts—those customers who wouldn’t leave until they vented all their frustrations on me.
Reality and the internet weren’t that different. The only difference was that I couldn’t see their faces here. But online, people insulted and expressed their complaints even more brazenly.
“If I prove my voice is real, what will you do?”
I was irritated. This situation wasn’t something I had wanted. But hearing insults and curses for no reason just made me feel more stressed
.
– If you do, I’ll go to the Han River and apologize naked, haha.
– LOL
The chat had shifted from arguing to laughing at the user who promised to apologize naked by the Han River.
“Hold on a second…”
This month, I didn’t have to pay rent, but I had to cover my sister’s rent. Since it was already a month overdue, she might face penalties, and there was nothing I could do about it. If I added the bonus to my weekly part-time earnings… and factored in food and living expenses… I’d have a little money left. If I could survive on bean sprouts in the fridge for the rest of the month, I might be able to buy both a webcam and a mic and still have some money left. After all, with this efficient body, one meal a day was enough.
That day, the stream ended at 6 p.m. after shopping for a webcam and mic.
I didn’t host Chocoa. I didn’t want to send these people to her stream, where they would probably just continue their arguments.
“….Ugh… Did I buy this for nothing…?”
Su-yeon thought about explaining to the doctor that she seemed to be losing control.
