Night of the Apocalypse

Chapter 42 - Reinforcements

“Escape? Didn’t you hear the alarms and the broadcast? If there are no accidents, there will be more monsters on the streets. Inside the welfare institute, the monsters we can currently see are at least limited in number and still manageable.” Shen Qiu analyzed rationally.

“Shen Qiu is right. We shouldn’t blindly escape. Besides, there are so many children here; they wouldn’t be able to run anyway,” Cao Kun agreed.

“Ah~”

At this moment, a scream erupted from the crowd on the north side, causing instant chaos.

Shen Qiu turned to look and saw a corpse staggering over.

“Don’t panic! Retreat this way!” Zhao Anyuan shouted, stepping forward to shield all the children in front of her.

Seeing that there was only one, Shen Qiu rushed forward.

Zhao Anyuan and the others watched with bated breath as Shen Qiu advanced, their hearts in their throats.

The corpse, seeing Shen Qiu charging at it, opened its mouth wide and lunged forward aggressively.

Shen Qiu dodged the corpse’s bite by sidestepping, then clenched his right fist and struck the corpse hard on the cheek.

Crack!

The corpse’s head twisted at an awkward angle.

Following that, Shen Qiu swept the corpse’s legs out from under it, causing it to fall.

Just as the corpse was about to struggle back up, Shen Qiu suddenly stomped on its back, forcefully pressing it back down to the ground.

“So cool!” Huang Gan shouted excitedly, watching Shen Qiu subdue a corpse in just a few moves.

However, at that moment, a female social worker cried out in terror, “Another one is coming!”

Shen Qiu looked in the direction and saw two corpses staggering toward him through the fog. His expression darkened as he quickly thought about how to fight back.

“Weapons are here.”

At that moment, Aunt Qiao and the others shouted, holding various makeshift weapons—a fire axe, a kitchen knife, a hoe, and more.

“Throw me the fire axe!” Shen Qiu shouted loudly.

Aunt Qiao, extremely nervous, threw the axe, but her aim was a bit off. Shen Qiu abandoned the corpse he was pressing down on, stepping forward to catch it.

The corpse he had pinned down immediately began to struggle to get up.

Cao Kun anxiously shouted, “Shen Qiu, be careful! That corpse is getting up!”

Just as his words fell, Shen Qiu executed a 180-degree turn and swung the axe horizontally.

Crack!

The fire axe struck the neck of the rising corpse, knocking it back down. A bloody gash was opened on its neck, and black blood splattered everywhere.

Shen Qiu, like a butcher, stepped on the corpse’s head and swung the axe down again.

Crack!

The head severed from the body!

Watching this scene, many of the children present were horrified, and some of the female social workers covered their mouths, nearly vomiting.

Shen Qiu didn’t care about appearances anymore and charged at the nearest corpse.

The corpse lunged at Shen Qiu, but before it could bite him, the fire axe had already struck its head.

Crack!

Half of the axe sank into its skull, and then Shen Qiu kicked the corpse away and ran toward another one, axe raised high.

As expected, he dispatched the second corpse just as easily with a single blow to the head.

After taking down three corpses in a row, Shen Qiu let out a long sigh of relief. However, in the next second, his pupils suddenly constricted.

He saw, emerging from the fog in all directions, one staggering corpse after another.

“Ah, so many monsters.”

“How can there be so many monsters?”

Huang Gan and the others looked at the corpses appearing everywhere, nearly wetting themselves in fear.

Shen Qiu brandished the fire axe and quickly retreated into the crowd, shouting in a deep voice, “All adults step forward and form a defensive circle. Use weapons if you have them; if not, use your fists. All children should hide inside!”

At that moment, security guard Uncle Wu, Aunt Qiao, Huang Gan, and others stepped forward to protect the children.

Unfortunately, some of the social workers had already reached their breaking point, shouting in terror, “We don’t want to die!”

As they spoke, this group of social workers turned and ran toward the exit!

“Calm down! Don’t run outside!” Zhao Anyuan shouted urgently.

But it was useless; extreme fear had taken over their minds, and they couldn’t hear anything.

Just as they managed to evade some of the corpses and were about to reach the door, a loud crash echoed!

With a thundering sound, the massive iron gate fell to the ground, and swarms of corpses surged in.

The fleeing social workers were directly knocked down by the crowd of corpses. They struggled desperately, crying out in despair, “Help!”

Unfortunately, no one could save them. Soon, amidst their screams, they were all torn to shreds.

Shen Qiu watched this scene, his expression growing increasingly grim. He looked left and right.

All around them were corpses; they were completely surrounded, especially at the entrance, where the number of corpses was even greater.

“What should we do, Shen Qiu!”

Huang Gan trembled as he gripped a kitchen knife, fearfully asking.

“What can we do? We can only fight them!”

Shen Qiu struggled to suppress the restless blood within him. The continuous killings and the fear of death were constantly stimulating his nerves, making him feel an unprecedented excitement.

“Damn it! Let’s fight them!”

“Fight!”

Seeing there was no way out, Huang Gan and the others steeled themselves and charged forward.

But the shaking of their legs said it all.

The corpses staggered ever closer.

Shen Qiu gripped the axe tighter, his heart a mix of fear and excitement.

Just as they were about to fight desperately, a sudden, piercing crashing sound erupted.

A heavy armored vehicle, revving at full power like a bulldozer, violently rolled in, followed by more than twenty fully armed soldiers.

They charged in with unstoppable momentum.

“Rescue is here! We’re saved!”

Cao Kun shouted excitedly upon seeing the armored vehicle.

When the armored vehicle and soldiers forcefully reached Shen Qiu and the others, a round-faced sergeant in military uniform stood atop the vehicle, holding a heavy machine gun while shouting at Shen Qiu and the others, “Quick! Everyone get down!”

Shen Qiu and the others immediately echoed, “Get down!”

A group of social workers and children dropped to the ground, while some children who hadn’t reacted quickly were pressed down by Zhao Anyuan and others.

Then, all the soldiers raised their HK416 automatic rifles in unison, forming a line.

“Open fire!”

As the sergeant’s right hand came down, the sound of gunfire erupted.

Bang! Bang!

The dense rain of bullets flew directly over Shen Qiu and the others, sweeping toward the zombies encircling them.

Zombies hit by the gunfire had their bodies riddled with holes, continuously retreating.

However, unless their bodies were severely damaged or they were shot in the head or heart, the zombies could still get back up.

“Captain Wei, why are these monsters so resilient?”

Several soldiers asked, their faces filled with tension.

“This is unbelievable!”

Wei Feng’s expression was very grim.

Shen Qiu observed closely and immediately identified the problem. He shouted to Wei Feng and the others, “Aim for the head! If you shoot them in the head, they generally won’t get back up.”

Upon hearing Shen Qiu’s words, Sergeant Wei Feng immediately issued the order.

“First squad, stop the sweeping fire! Everyone, aim for headshots! The rest, continue suppressive fire!”

“Yes!”

The soldiers present all responded.

With the change in strategy, one zombie after another was shot in the head and fell, gradually bringing the situation under control.

However, zombies continued to emerge from all around.

“Oh my God, why are there so many monsters? Where are they all coming from?”

Huang Gan, crouching beside Shen Qiu, kept swallowing nervously as she spoke.

“We must have bad luck; the welfare institute is located in an overlapping disaster zone,” Shen Qiu observed and analyzed with a tense expression.
