Chapter 43 - Deterioration
“Overlapping? What do you mean by overlapping?” Huang Gan asked, looking completely baffled.
“This is just my guess. It’s like two parallel worlds that intersect at some stage, creating overlaps and connections. This could also explain why so many people have disappeared before,” Shen Qiu shared his thoughts directly.
“Ah! That’s just ridiculous! What should we do?” Huang Gan was at a loss for words.
“What else can we do? We are just ordinary citizens, with little power. We can only place our hopes on the country,” Shen Qiu said what was on his mind. A world-changing event of this magnitude was beyond their personal control. Furthermore, judging from the current situation, the crisis was steadily worsening.
There is a saying that one should not fear the sudden arrival of the apocalypse, but rather dread its gradual approach. That kind of despair is like being subjected to slow torture, tormenting one’s nerves and challenging the boundaries of human nature.
That would be the most terrifying thing.
Time passed quickly; the mist thickened, and visibility continued to decline.
Zombies emerged like mushrooms after rain.
Wei Feng had no choice but to wave his hand, ordering most of his subordinates to disperse around the welfare institute to better protect the people there.
At this moment, within the dense crowd of zombies to the west, a zombie warrior with a short blade in its hand slightly raised its head, its blood-red eyes staring at Sergeant Wei Feng, who was manning the machine gun on top of the armored vehicle.
It then lowered its head and began to approach the zombie crowd.
Bang, bang!
One zombie after another was shot in the head. Just as the cover in front was taken down, the zombie warrior gripping the short blade suddenly lifted its head, its mouth stretching open to reveal a chilling, humanoid smile.
In an instant, the zombie warrior burst forth with cheetah-like speed, charging toward the armored vehicle.
At that moment, a soldier stationed in front of the armored vehicle sensed something was wrong and immediately raised his automatic rifle to fire desperately.
The zombie warrior holding the short blade dodged left and right as it ran, avoiding critical hits to its head and body.
It absorbed some bullets and, in an instant, closed the distance, swiftly decapitating the soldier with a single blow.
The severed head, before hitting the ground, still wore an expression of disbelief.
Seeing this, Wei Feng roared, “Amu, Zhu Er, take it down!”
Since Wei Feng was currently manning the machine gun and suppressing most of the zombies, he couldn’t free up his hands and could only shout commands to his subordinates.
Amu and Zhu Er turned their guns toward the zombie warrior and opened fire.
A barrage of bullets struck the zombie warrior.
Crack crack!
Instantly, the zombie warrior’s body was riddled with holes, black blood splattering everywhere.
The zombie warrior then threw its broken blade!
Thud!
The short blade accurately struck Zhu Er’s heart, killing him on the spot as his body went rigid and fell.
“Bastard!”
Amu angrily shot at the zombie warrior, but
click!
At that critical moment, his magazine was empty.
The zombie warrior lunged at Amu like a hyena.
Instinctively, Amu tried to block with his gun, but he was quickly overpowered and knocked down.
Amu struggled desperately, but it was futile. Although he and the zombie warrior were of similar size, the zombie warrior’s strength was astonishing.
The zombie warrior then opened its mouth, revealing sharp teeth, and bit down at Amu.
All of this happened in the blink of an eye, and the rest of the teammates were unable to react in time.
Just as the zombie warrior was about to succeed, Amu’s head jerked to the side, narrowly avoiding the bite.
With all his might, Amu pressed his left hand against the zombie to keep it at bay, while his right hand fished a dagger from his waist and plunged it deep into the zombie warrior’s heart.
Crack!
Thick, black blood flowed out.
The zombie’s pupils immediately began to glaze over as Amu pushed it away with all his strength.
He gasped for breath as he got back on his feet, turning to look around, only to freeze in shock.
He saw that another teammate had been taken down; the number of zombies was increasing, and the situation was becoming critical.
He quickly reloaded and raised his weapon to shoot.
Meanwhile, on the ground, Shen Qiu was observing the battlefield, and his heart sank further into despair.
It was clear that the situation was worsening, and the soldiers who had come to their aid were starting to suffer casualties.
Continuing like this was not an option; he couldn’t just lie there waiting to be rescued—he had to rely on himself.
Shen Qiu’s gaze fell on the first soldier who had been killed.
He then got up, bent low, and rushed toward the fallen soldier.
Since the distance wasn’t far, Shen Qiu easily reached the soldier’s body, quickly picking up the HK416 and deftly removing three magazines and a grenade from the corpse.
Wei Feng, observing from the armored vehicle, furrowed his brow at this scene. As he swept the area with the machine gun, he shouted to Shen Qiu,
“Kid, can you use a gun?”
“I can! I’ve practiced at the shooting range,” Shen Qiu responded directly.
“Good, aim carefully, don’t hit our own people.”
“Understood!”
After replying, Shen Qiu raised his weapon and aimed at the approaching zombie, attempting a controlled shot!
Bang!*
A zombie fell to the ground with a headshot.
Shen Qiu was very satisfied with the feel of the firearm; it was well-maintained and had high accuracy!
Wei Feng was surprised by this scene; he hadn’t expected the young man to have such excellent marksmanship.
In fact, Shen Qiu had frequently participated in extreme sports overseas, often active in both the Blue Alliance and Gray Alliance regions, which had given him ample opportunities to handle firearms, resulting in his exceptional shooting skills.
Handling an AK with one hand was his specialty.
Meanwhile, Huang Gan, who was lying on the ground, watched as Shen Qiu effortlessly took down zombies and couldn’t help but say to Cao Kun,
“Damn, Shen Qiu is so smooth with the gun. Could it be that he really couldn’t find a job and decided to become a mercenary?”
“Who knows? We might as well just stay low,” Cao Kun replied, not knowing what else to say.
At this point, the fog around them grew thicker, and more zombies began to emerge.
“Captain, this isn’t good! The number of monsters is increasing!” Amu shouted anxiously at Wei Feng.
Wei Feng looked around, his expression shifting constantly, then picked up the communicator to call for help.
“Hello, this is the Sacred Sound Welfare Institute. The Lone Wolf Squad requests air support; we can’t hold on much longer.”
“That’s not possible; the gray mist is too thick, and visibility is too low for precise strikes. It’s easy to cause friendly fire! Hold on! We’ll coordinate personnel to support you shortly.”
A young female officer’s voice came through the communicator.
“Hurry up! There are way too many kids here!” Wei Feng urged anxiously.
“Why don’t you find a safer spot to hold out? Help will be there soon.”
“Sigh!”
Wei Feng slapped his thigh and hung up the communicator, shouting to his subordinates,
“Everyone, listen up! Prepare to cover the civilians’ retreat!”
“Yes!”
Amu and the others immediately complied.
They then shouted to Zhao Anyuan and the others,
“Who is the director? Quickly organize the personnel for evacuation! We can’t stay here any longer!”
“I am. I’ll arrange it right away. An Mei, Xiao Jie, Ni Mu, hurry, notify everyone; each of you is responsible for a group of children.”
Zhao Anyuan tried to keep calm as she assigned tasks to the social workers.
