Night of the Apocalypse

Chapter 44 - Breach of Defense

One of the social workers at the scene was also suppressing his fear as he helped the children to their feet.

“Don’t panic! Don’t get flustered, just follow us.”

Shen Qiu scanned the crowd and suddenly remembered something, quickly asking for Zhao Anyuan.

“Director An, where are those babies? I haven’t seen a single one.”

“They’re all in the nursery. The incident happened suddenly, and there were too many babies to carry out. But don’t worry; A Dan and the others are watching them inside. We locked the nursery door and blocked it with heavy objects.”

Zhao Anyuan explained to Shen Qiu.

After hearing Zhao Anyuan’s words, Shen Qiu rubbed his forehead and said,

“Director An, this isn’t good. Those monsters came over randomly, and they might directly overlap into the nursery. Even if they don’t overlap inside, they’ll go crazy and destroy any obstacles if they hear noise, putting all the babies in the nursery in danger.”

Upon hearing Shen Qiu’s words, Zhao Anyuan became anxious and immediately ran toward the main building.

Aunt Qiao sensed that the situation was dire and rushed over to grab Zhao Anyuan.

“Director An? What are you doing?”

Zhao Anyuan trembled uncontrollably, filled with urgency as she said,

“The babies are in danger! I have to go back and save them!”

Upon hearing Zhao Anyuan’s words, Aunt Qiao’s expression changed as she suddenly realized the seriousness of the situation.

“Oh no! I’ll go with you!”

“Don’t be reckless; that area might be filled with monsters. Going there would be suicide!”

Huang Gan and the others quickly tried to dissuade Director An from going to save the babies.

At this moment, Wei Feng noticed the commotion near Zhao Anyuan and shouted.

“What are you doing? Why aren’t you organizing the personnel to prepare for evacuation? What are you arguing about?”

“Sir, we can’t evacuate! There are many infants in that building! Please, can you save them?”
Zhao Anyuan pleaded, trembling.

Wei Feng’s face turned darker than charcoal upon hearing Zhao Anyuan’s words, and he gritted his teeth to ask,

“How many infants are there?”

“About 130.”
Shen Qiu answered succinctly.

Upon hearing this number, Wei Feng felt a heavy weight on his heart.

Shen Qiu quietly watched Wei Feng, waiting for him to make a decision. With so many children in the nursery, saving them was impossible without the help of Wei Feng and his team.

“Captain, what should we do?”
Amu asked anxiously.

“Damn it! Amu, take a few people and cover them as they go to rescue the babies. Do it quickly! Save as many as you can, and if things go wrong, evacuate immediately!”

Wei Feng said fiercely, fully aware that this action was somewhat foolish, but he had no other choice.

“Understood!”
Amu immediately responded.

“Thank you so much! I will lead the way.”
Director Zhao Anyuan said excitedly, seeing that they were willing to go rescue the babies.

“Director An, you shouldn’t go. You should stay here and comfort the children. I’ll lead the way to the nursery; I know how to get there.”
Shen Qiu calmly stopped Director Zhao Anyuan.

“Xiao Shen.”
Zhao Anyuan looked at Shen Qiu with teary eyes.

“Shen Qiu is right. Director An, you shouldn’t go; we’ll take care of the babies.”

Huang Gan, Zhao Lian, Cao Kun, and the others all stepped forward resolutely.

“Then I’ll leave it to you.”

Zhao Anyuan nodded in agreement.

“Let’s go!”

Shen Qiu immediately ran toward the main building, holding his firearm.
Amu and the others quickly followed.

Intersection of Shouhuan and Shengyin Streets.

Under the terrifying barrage of gunfire, the corpses were shot to pieces.
However, the fog grew thicker, and visibility continued to decrease, causing the corpses to close in relentlessly.

“Everyone, stay alert! Don’t let a single monster get close!”
Li Yan shouted loudly.

“Yes!”

All the soldiers on-site were at their utmost tension. They were not afraid of war itself, but rather the unprecedented mental pressure of fighting such unknown monsters.

At that moment, a young man in sportswear ran over in a panic, being closely pursued by several corpses.

Hearing gunfire coming from the direction of the intersection, he felt a glimmer of hope, as if he had grasped a lifeline while drowning, and desperately ran toward it.

As he got closer, the sound of gunfire became clearer.

“Help! Save me!”
the young man cried out in terror.

At the intersection, a soldier, highly tense, fired at the approaching figure through the gray fog.
He saw a silhouette rapidly closing in, but due to the low visibility, he couldn’t make it out clearly.

Suddenly, he was startled, quickly adjusting his aim and firing at that figure!

Rat-tat-tat!
The figure let out a scream and fell to the ground.

Although the gunfire in the area was deafening, the soldier still heard a faint cry, leaving him stunned.

“What happened? Did I accidentally hit someone? Is that a living person?”

His companion next to him also froze and uncertainly spoke up.

“It really seems to be a person; I heard a faint scream.”

Li Yan saw this scene and immediately walked over, placing a hand on the soldier’s shoulder as he addressed everyone.

“Everyone, listen up! This is a critical moment. We cannot allow any monsters to get close; they must be shot on sight. If there are any accidental shootings, it’s not your fault—don’t carry any psychological burden. As for the responsibility afterward, I will take it all on myself. We absolutely cannot let this position fall; otherwise, the entire area will be in danger! Do you understand?”

“Understood!”
Everyone responded in unison.

“However, if you can clearly identify a target, intentional shootings are absolutely not allowed!”
Li Yan added promptly.

“Yes!”
All the soldiers responded loudly. With Li Yan’s words, their mental pressure significantly decreased, allowing them to devote themselves to the fight even more.

No matter how many corpses emerged from the gray fog ahead, they eliminated them all.
Gradually, the number of corpses began to dwindle.

But before Li Yan and the others could catch their breath, a sudden barrage of bullets swept through the gray fog from the right street.

“Ah!”

Three soldiers were shot on the spot.
Bullets struck the heavy armored vehicle, creating sparks.

“Enemy attack from the right!”
Chen Ji shouted in anger.

Li Yan and the others quickly adjusted their aim, while the rest of the team used the armored vehicle for cover and changed their defensive direction.

In the right street, pairs of red eyes lit up.
Accompanied by the clanking sounds of footsteps, several mechanical clean-up units emerged.

“Damn it, it’s mechanical soldiers! Open fire!”
Li Yan shouted angrily as he recognized the threat.

Chen Ji and the others opened fire fiercely, simultaneously throwing grenades.

Boom!

One by one, the clean-up units were blown to pieces.

The damaged bodies sparked with electricity!
However, these clean-up units were not to be underestimated; they formed a line and unleashed a continuous barrage of firepower.

Both sides fell into a stalemate of firepower.

At that moment, a shell suddenly whistled out from the gray fog, directly targeting the heavy armored vehicle.

Li Yan reacted quickly and shouted,

“Dodge!”

He leaped back.

Boom!

In an instant, the heavy armored vehicle that had been serving as cover for him was hit and exploded violently!

Flames shot up into the sky.

The people inside the armored vehicle and several soldiers who didn’t manage to dodge were killed on the spot.

Li Yan’s ears were ringing.

He struggled to get up, shaking his head repeatedly.

“Li Yan, are you okay?”

Chen Ji helped Li Yan, but Li Yan pushed his hand away and turned to look into the gray fog.

He saw a terrifying, grim figure slowly emerging—a four-meter-tall LZ-01 type War Guardian: the Widow Spider came into view.

At that moment, the other two surviving armored vehicles immediately turned their guns toward the Widow Spider and opened fire, but it was of no use; the dense bullets could not penetrate its thick armor.

Instead, it only angered the Widow Spider, which turned its head to lock onto the two armored vehicles.

Whoosh!

One rocket after another poured out.

Chen Ji immediately pulled Li Yan down.

Boom!

Instantly, the remaining two armored vehicles were destroyed, and the shockwave from the explosions sent Chen Ji, Li Yan, and the others flying.

Both men were bleeding and in pain.
Li Yan struggled to take out his communicator and spoke,

“This is the Sacred Sound Street defense point, requesting support.”
