Chapter 37 - The Demon King
“We confirm that the same entity has defeated the floor 9 boss 100 times. An extra boss will be summoned on floor 10.”
“What, what the hell is this?”
“Hey! What’s happening?”
Many novice explorers are panicking, starting to make a fuss about what just happened.
Boom!
At that moment, something falls from the sky. The sound silences the agitated explorers, and everyone looks in the direction of the noise.
A cloud of dust rises, revealing the presence of something enormous. Twice the size of an adult male, with green skin. It’s tough-looking skin seems impenetrable, as if it’s a seasoned warrior.
With distinctive long ears, a long nose, and a giant axe slung over its shoulder, it appears to be a goblin. This creature, surely the weakest of the goblin species, wears a magnificent red cape like a king and, despite the impact of its fall, stands up as if nothing happened.
The goblin exudes an aura of certain death.
The explorers can’t move. This creature shouldn’t be here. It’s definitely not supposed to appear on such a low floor. Their bodies and minds scream in despair, realizing they can’t possibly defeat it.
A merciless announcement confirms our dire situation.
“We have summoned the extra boss, Goblin King. All gates except for the one from floor 9 will be sealed until the extra boss is defeated.”
“No… no way…”
“Help… please…”
Step by step, the Goblin King advances, slowly recalling past rage, as if trembling with joy at finally getting revenge.
The goblins, embodying the fury of those trampled by explorers, walk forward with an axe on their shoulder.
The explorers can’t move. Their bodies and minds scream, trying to accept their impending doom.
At the front, an explorer desperately tries to move his legs to run but falls. His legs give out, and he can only flail desperately, trying to escape.
The Goblin King reaches him. It raises its axe, intending to cut him in half.
“Help me…”
But no one even draws their sword. They know it’s futile; no one can stop such a giant axe. All they can do is watch the pleading man.
And the only thing he can do is…
“Help me… help me, please!!”
…cry out for someone to save him.
The axe swings down. Everyone braces for death and looks away.
But some don’t turn away. While everyone averts their eyes and abandons him, some don’t. Boys who resist even if they lack strength. Boys who know that saying no to being trampled is true strength.
Because that’s what courage is.
Clang!
It’s their sense of justice.
The sound of metal echoes across the floor. It sounds like swords crashing with enough force to destroy each other. The explorers open their eyes to see a small boy, smaller than them, blocking the giant axe with his own.
“Grrraaahhh!”
(What is this blow? It feels like all my energy and strength were drained in an instant.)
“Ugh, R-Reina!”
“Yes!”
Barely managing to push back the axe with both hands, the boy calls out.
Another person, undeterred by the situation, charges at the king with her sword.
“Graaa!”
Though she can’t deliver a decisive blow, she manages to cut through the skin. Blue blood flows from the Goblin King’s shoulder. It seems that the combined attacks of Kenya and Reina can just barely affect this opponent.
Kenya’s equipment is all B-rank, suitable for floors 30-40. This enemy is of a higher floor, likely above 40 but not quite reaching 50, given that they can damage it.
(We can win, Reina and I can do this!)
The boy and girl engage the king in battle. The alchemist and the hero face off against the Goblin King.
Their first cooperative effort.
Instead of cutting a cake, they cut the Goblin King with swords.
The audience is large, but no one smiles or cheers.
All they can do is shout and desperately support the two’s efforts.
“Awesome…”
One of the explorers mutters. The others, too, begin to voice their awe. In this low floor, most parties are only equipped with knight series gear or slightly better.
Yet these two are clearly exceptional. Their battle suggests top-tier explorers, possibly even gold or platinum rank.
The girl’s fighting style is beautiful. She dodges the Goblin King’s destructive axe as if petals are dancing, counterattacking as she moves.
The boy’s style is rough, yet he blocks the massive axe and pushes it away with a roar.
Some explorers may see them as not much different from their own children. But their backs are strong, and the explorers draw courage from them.
How long did they keep clashing?
“Hah, hah, hah.” “Hah, hah, hah.”
Both Kenya and Reina are out of breath, but neither is fatally wounded. Their teamwork is incredible, as if they had done this many times before.
The Goblin King is also bleeding blue from multiple wounds, panting heavily.
“Keep going…”
“Keep going!!”
“Keep going!!!”
Many explorers cheer for them. They start to believe that these two might actually win. They wish fervently for their victory against the overwhelming fear of death.
Kenya uses his strength to block the Goblin King’s attacks, creating an opening for Reina to cut into its body. They keep repeating this, slowly gaining ground.
The Goblin King, who had been grinning, now shows no trace of overconfidence. It realizes these two can threaten its life and fights seriously for survival.
In the midst of this extreme battle, Kenya feels they can win, he thinks they can. As long as they don’t make a single mistake, they can defeat this monster.
But such confidence is a mistake in battle.
During the struggle, thinking about victory is a distraction. Kenya hasn’t yet fully grasped what true battle entails, the need for unwavering focus until the end.
That overconfidence proves fatal.
“?!”
Blocking the King’s downward strike with his sword, Kenya loses his balance. The intense fight has left the ground uneven, and a moment’s distraction aligns with the wrong timing. He slips, landing on his back.
From that position, the King’s horizontal swing targets Kenya.
“Gahh!”
While falling, Kenya manages to block the blow in an awkward position. But the impact sends his blade flying.
With his sword gone, Kenya’s status drops significantly.
“Gyaaah!”
Seeing an opportunity, the King slashes back at Kenya, its axe aimed to kill.
“!?”
The blow carves into Kenya’s chest.
