Chapter 47: “On The Run”
John decisively turned off his phone. He also asked Charlie to turn off his phone and took out the SIM card inside.
After doing this, with a bunch of cash stuffed into the backpack, the two hunters rushed to the suburbs on foot.
They didn't dare to use taxis or other public vehicles, afraid that the people would rat them out or chase them like the three hunters before.
Neo didn't move around and was so silent for a while, until they were a distance away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
[Big hooman, smol hooman...I am so sorry...]
These two were dragged into the muds because he tamed them, and he attracted people's covetousness, causing trouble for the three of them.
It was all his fault.
Both John and Charlie were already prepared to face various scenarios with this ancestor, so at this moment, they were surprisingly calm.
[It's okay. Even if all of this is indirectly your fault, those people are still the most despicable.]
John gritted his teeth, and when he recalled a certain memory in his mind, he almost bit his tongue out of rage.
Those families are really disgusting. A bunch of maggots gnawing on ordinary people and hunters without backers.
Neo listened to John's hoarse voice in his mind and fell silent.
At this time, he didn't even have any urge to come out of the backpack.
It was all because of his too eye-catching identity...
If only he roamed around as a cockroach, maybe all of this wouldn't happen.
Neo suddenly felt emo.
Why is it so difficult to live freely as a slime?
People targeted him everywhere.
Charlie and John didn't know that a certain slime was depressed.
After they ran for an entire hour, they took a break for thirty minutes and continued to run towards the suburbs.
After five full hours running on foot and taking a rest once an hour, the two hunters finally left Slime City's territory smoothly, officially entering the suburbs.
Neo had already put away his depression and started to look around through the gap in the backpack's zipper.
When Neo looked at his surroundings, he immediately saw the receding "steel forest" behind.
From this distance, he could see the towering silver-blue wall and a nearly transparent barrier surrounding the entire city.
As they got farther and farther away from the city, the surroundings became more and more desolate, with only trees, rocks, bushes and weeds.
The sun had already begun to set, and night was about to arrive.
[Guys, we have to enter the nearest town or village before the sun completely disappears. C'mon! Speed up!]
John urged Charlie, who looked like he was about to faint.
But Charlie was already at his limits.
[U-uncle, I can't...I can't run anymore...]
Seeing that Charlie really couldn't continue to walk further, Neo immediately proposed an idea.
[Hooman, enter my contracted beast space. You rest for a while and then switch with the big hooman.]
Charlie's eyes instantly brightened at Neo's suggestion, and he didn't hesitate to throw his backpack to the dumbfounded John.
Dang! How did he forget that this ancestor also had such a cheating skill!
After making sure that Charlie was ready, Neo immediately shouted—
[Beast Charlie, return!]
With just one call, Charlie disappeared out of thin air and smoothly entered Neo's contracted beast space.
The telepathy was still connected, so Neo quickly asked Charlie about his condition.
[How is it? Can you breathe normally? Is it too cramped or not?]
At first, Charlie was silent, but after a few seconds, he slowly let out a sigh of relief.
[It's okay, Neo. The space is pitch black and quiet, but it's quite spacious for me, as big as a king size bed.]
And he could breathe smoothly too.
This place was the best place to sleep without any outside disturbance!
But…the space was too quiet, almost scaring the timid Charlie.
Thankfully, with Neo chattering in his mind, Charlie was not so afraid anymore.
[Keep talking, Neo. Your voice can help me calm down...]
At Charlie's plea, John and Neo had no choice but to walk through the wilderness suburbs while talking about random things.
Neo started from what he just saw along the way.
[Big hooman, what is that black barrier over there?]
Neo pointed his tiny hands at a certain huge barrier afar that was so conspicuous in the middle of the wilderness.
The city barrier he saw before was transparent, so why was this one black?
Seeing the black barrier in the distance, John didn't immediately answer Leo's question but talked about other things.
[Ah, I think I have to tell you about the world map and World District 9's map first.]
John cleared his throat and pretended to be a serious teacher to the slime who was listening in the backpack.
[You know what…this world is like a spiral, with the center is the [Civilization Tower], followed by District 1-3 that formed a golden triangle.]
Then, the other districts spread out, circling the first 3 districts and the tower.
[Our World District 9 is spread out at the very back, near World District 10 and the Red Line.]
John made some hand gestures in the air, trying to give Neo a clear image.
[Then now, imagine our district as a huge straight line.]
The four capital cities were located in a straight line, a certain distance away from each other, becoming "anchors".
The rest of the ordinary and smaller cities were located in between the four capital cities.
John continued to describe District 9's map without using his phone.
[The front side of our district is District 8, separated by a long and vast river. The back side is the city suburbs where we are now, and then, there is one last district behind the suburbs— ]
World District 10.
A place of exile, a place without a law.
The world's biggest prison for the most vicious criminals and their seven generations of descendants!
