Chapter 48: “Black Barrier & Red Line"
[That black barrier you mentioned before…is World District 10's barrier.] John pointed at the black barrier again, finally answering Neo's question.
Unlike other districts and cities' barriers that were there to protect the people inside, World District 10's barrier was more like a cage, imprisoning criminals and all troublesome dungeon beasts inside.
Rumors said that all the most disgusting and strange dungeon beasts only appeared at World District 10, as if to punish these criminals.
[Ohhhh— so that's it! I see, I see!] Neo finally got a certain understanding about the World Districts, but then, John started to act mysterious.
[You know what? All World Districts other than World District 10 have definite highest-level dungeons.]
Neo immediately recalled District 9's dungeons and found that the highest-level dungeon there was only F-rank, never higher.
The little slime subconsciously exclaimed.
[How can this be?? Don't dungeons appear randomly?]
Why would the dungeons appear strictly according to the level of the district itself?
It was as if someone was arranging these dungeons…
Hearing Neo's response, John's eyes instantly lit up, as if he had been waiting for Neo to ask this question.
He immediately slapped his thigh and shouted.
[Good question! This miracle is all thanks to the World Heroes!]
This world was actually really similar to Neo's world, until a few decades ago, humanity suffered from a sudden [Dungeon Catastrophe], where dungeons appeared everywhere out of thin air.
After humanity went through years of chaos and desperation, in the third year, several legendary-level awakened hunters worked together to change the world.
Using some kind of space ability, they picked out the fallen cities and countries that couldn't be saved anymore, separating almost half of the world into two sides—
[Human Districts] and
[Primordial Wild District].
[Primordial Wild District] became a no-man's land, a paradise for dungeon beasts.
The surviving humans inside the [Primordial Wild District] either survived and moved to [Human Districts], or died a gruesome death in the beasts' bellies.
[You see that red vertical barrier behind the dome-shaped black barrier?]
John suddenly pointed at a vast and tall reddish transparent "wall" over the horizon.
Neo saw the "wall" and couldn't see the end. The red "wall" even reached way beyond the clouds, preventing aerial beasts and planes from passing through.
Before Neo could nod at John's question, John immediately spoke with a hint of excitement in his voice.
[That's the [Red Line], the dividing line between our human territory and the Primordial Wild District!]
After taking a few short breaths to calm down his excitement, John continued his story, still with a hint of excitement in his voice.
[After separating the two sides, the heroes quickly re-assembled the world, like playing with puzzle pieces.]
They grouped together dungeons of the same rank in one territory, which formed [World Districts] that humans knew to this day.
The farther from [Primordial Wild District], the higher the dungeon levels, but also the bigger the safe zones, the more the resources, the more powerful the hunters, the more prosperous.
The closer to the [Primordial Wild District], the lower the dungeon levels, the less the resources, the weaker the hunters, the more "backward", and also the easier to suffer from the beasts inside [Primordial Wild District].
[To be honest, the number of ordinary people is the highest in District 8 and 9.]
John's eyes dimmed, as if remembering another painful memory.
[When we go to higher-level districts, there will be less and less ordinary people.]
It sounded cruel to ordinary people, but it was necessary to keep the entire human race from extinction.
The law of the jungle. The strong survived, the weak perished.
After the ten human districts were fully formed, some hunters with incredible skills sacrificed their lives to set up a certain rule, forcing newer dungeons to only appear in designated districts.
[That's how the heroes created this stable world.]
John ended his speech with a solemn face.
History recorded the deeds of these heroes and marked that incredible year back then as the [New Era].
After entering the [New Era], humans had tried to clear up the rampant beasts inside the [Primordial Wild District], slowly taking back the lost territories.
Despite their efforts, they could only expand the territories of all the World Districts to a certain extent, but certainly not that much.
[All of this is because we still have to deal with a more dangerous thing than the dungeon beasts— ]
John paused for a few seconds and let out a long sigh.
[It was the Civilization Tower.]
Before Neo could ask about the tower, John suddenly spoke to Neo with clear fatigue in his eyes and voice.
[Okay, I want to change shifts with Charlie. It's time for me to rest!]
He was really about to collapse after walking and running for almost six hours straight!
He even had to coax a certain ancestor with stories, and now, his throat was sore.
If he was not an awakened hunter with a strong physique, he would have died a long time ago.
Please, take mercy on this old man!
[Oh, right, right, I forgot, hahaha.]
Neo tried to calm down the exhausted John and immediately woke up Charlie with a shout.
[Smol hooman! Wake up! It's your shift now!]
Charlie was immediately startled awake by the shout in his mind.
Without complaining, he went out of the contracted beast space on his own, appearing out of thin air.
Then, John threw away the two backpacks he was carrying and without a word, he entered his own contracted beast space.
Charlie was still a bit groggy, but despite his slow movement, he slowly picked up the backpacks.
He wore one backpack on his back and hugged the other one.
Because Charlie was weaker than John, his walking speed slowed down by a lot, and when they finally found the entrance to the nearest village, the sun had already completely set down.
Charlie sighed in relief and was about to enter the village through a small road when Neo suddenly shouted.
[Wait? What's that?]
