Chapter 26: Chapter 26: The Endgame
The night had swallowed the city whole. A thick fog had settled over the streets, blotting out the lights and muffling the sounds of the world. It was as if the city had become a place suspended between reality and something else—something darker. Li An stood by the window, staring out at the mist, her mind racing.
The silence in the room was heavy, almost suffocating. It had been hours since her conversation with Zhang Xian, and though she had tried to focus on something else, the weight of their words hung over her. The choice she had to make, the path she had to walk—it all seemed so overwhelming, so impossible. How could she be expected to make sense of all this, when nothing made sense at all?
Zhang Xian had offered her his heart, his trust, but he had also given her the impossible task of making a decision. He had laid everything on the line, and now it was up to her to decide whether to take the next step. But the truth was, she didn't know what the next step even looked like.
A sharp knock on the door interrupted her thoughts. Li An startled, then quickly crossed the room to open it. Standing in the doorway was a figure she hadn't expected—Liu Yuan. His face was pale, his eyes wide with urgency.
"We need to talk," he said, his voice tight. "It's about Zhang Xian."
Li An's heart skipped a beat. She stepped back, allowing Liu Yuan to enter. "What happened?"
Liu Yuan's gaze flickered nervously toward the door, as though he were checking to see if anyone was listening. "There's something you need to know. Something about Zhang Xian's past."
Li An felt a chill run down her spine. She had always known that Zhang Xian's past was shrouded in mystery, but she had never pressed him for details. Now, it seemed, the past was coming to her whether she was ready or not.
"What is it?" she asked, her voice trembling.
Liu Yuan took a deep breath before speaking. "It's not just that he's been involved in some dangerous things. It's what he did to protect you. What he's been hiding from you—what he's willing to do to keep you safe."
Li An felt her pulse quicken. She had thought she understood Zhang Xian, but now it seemed like she had barely scratched the surface. She could feel the weight of his secrets pressing down on her, and a deep, unsettling suspicion crept into her mind.
"Tell me everything," she demanded, her voice firm. "What has he been hiding?"
Liu Yuan hesitated, his gaze flickering nervously between Li An and the door. "I'm not supposed to tell you this," he said quietly, almost apologetically. "But you need to know. Zhang Xian—he's not just a man running from his past. He's a man who's willing to destroy everything, to risk everything, to protect you. Even if it means hurting you in the process."
Li An's head spun. This was too much. She had spent so long trying to understand Zhang Xian's motivations, but now everything seemed to be crumbling around her. The man she thought she knew—was he someone completely different? And what did this mean for her?
"What are you saying?" she whispered. "What could he possibly be hiding that's so dangerous?"
Liu Yuan's face twisted in distress. "I can't go into the details, but there are people—dangerous people—who are after him. After both of you. And Zhang Xian's been keeping them off your back, even if it means going to extreme lengths. He's sacrificed a lot to protect you, Li An. More than you realize."
The room seemed to spin, the walls closing in as her thoughts raced. Everything she had believed, everything she had trusted about Zhang Xian—was it a lie? Or was it something darker, something even more complicated than she had ever imagined?
"But why?" she breathed. "Why would he keep this from me?"
Liu Yuan's expression softened, his voice almost sympathetic. "Because he's trying to protect you. He doesn't want you to carry the weight of his choices, doesn't want you to be dragged into this world."
Li An sank into the nearest chair, her mind reeling. Zhang Xian had been trying to shield her from the truth, trying to keep her safe by keeping her in the dark. But in doing so, he had built a wall between them—a wall that was now beginning to crumble, piece by piece. The secrets, the lies, they were all coming to light, and the path forward seemed more uncertain than ever.
"So what now?" she whispered, more to herself than to Liu Yuan.
Liu Yuan hesitated before answering, his voice filled with caution. "I don't know. But you need to make a choice, Li An. You need to decide whether you can handle the truth. Whether you can handle the consequences of being with someone like Zhang Xian."
Her chest tightened at the thought. She had already given him so much of herself—her trust, her heart, her fears. But was that enough to carry her through this storm? Could she truly stand by him, knowing the depth of the darkness he was hiding?
As she sat there, her mind awash with uncertainty, one thing became painfully clear: no matter what happened next, there was no turning back. The world she had once known—the world she had tried to protect—was slipping away, and there was nothing she could do to stop it.
The question now was whether she would face the storm, or run from it.
