Chapter 27: Chapter 27: Breaking the Chain
The weight of Liu Yuan's words lingered in the room, suffocating and oppressive. Li An couldn't shake the feeling that everything she thought she knew about Zhang Xian had been a carefully constructed façade, built from lies and half-truths. What was the man she had trusted? What was he hiding beneath the stoic exterior?
For the first time since this ordeal began, she felt like she was standing at the edge of a precipice, the ground beneath her shifting, slipping away. There was no clear path forward. No way to move without risking everything.
Her eyes wandered to the window, where the fog still clung to the streets, thick and blurring everything. The world outside seemed as murky as her thoughts. The city was quiet, too quiet. The silence almost felt like a warning.
"What do I do now?" she whispered to herself, barely able to form the question in her mind, let alone say it out loud.
Liu Yuan's departure left her with a hollow feeling. The words he'd left behind kept echoing in her mind. Zhang Xian had kept her in the dark to protect her. But did she want to be protected anymore? Or was it better to know the truth, however dangerous it might be?
In the back of her mind, a faint voice urged her to trust Zhang Xian, to believe in the person he had shown her. But was it that simple? Was everything they had shared just a fragile illusion, shattered the moment she discovered what he had been hiding?
A knock on the door broke through her spiraling thoughts. Li An's heart skipped a beat as she turned, expecting Liu Yuan to return. But instead, it was Zhang Xian himself, standing in the doorway, his expression unreadable.
"We need to talk," he said quietly, his voice low and steady.
Li An stood frozen for a moment, unsure of how to react. He had always had a way of appearing when she least expected it, but this time felt different. His presence was no longer comforting; instead, it filled her with an unease she couldn't shake. Everything in her wanted to turn away, to run from the confrontation she knew was coming, but she couldn't. Not anymore.
"About what?" she asked, her voice steady despite the storm swirling inside her.
Zhang Xian stepped into the room, closing the door behind him. He didn't immediately sit down or make any attempt to bridge the distance between them. Instead, he simply stood there, his gaze fixed on her.
"About everything," he said, his voice barely above a whisper. "About what you've just learned. About who I really am."
Li An's pulse quickened. She could feel the tension in the air, the heavy weight of the moment pressing down on her. She opened her mouth to speak, but the words stuck in her throat. What could she possibly say?
She had so many questions. So many doubts. But somehow, they all felt insignificant compared to the one burning question in her heart. "Why didn't you tell me?"
Zhang Xian didn't look away. "Because I wanted to protect you." His answer was simple, but it felt loaded with meaning. "I've been trying to protect you from this world, from everything that comes with it. I thought if you didn't know, you'd be safe."
Li An shook her head. "Safe? You kept me in the dark. How is that safety? How is hiding the truth protecting me?"
Zhang Xian took a step closer, but he didn't try to touch her. His expression was still unreadable, though there was something in his eyes—a deep, quiet sadness that seemed to stretch back into the past.
"Because I care about you more than anything," he said softly. "I don't want to drag you into this mess. I don't want you to see what I've seen, to become part of this world."
For a moment, the words felt almost too much to bear. Li An's chest tightened, the pain of it cutting deeper than she had expected. How could he make these decisions for her? How could he think that shielding her from the truth was an act of love?
"You don't get to decide what's best for me," she said, her voice breaking. "I'm not a child, Zhang Xian. I can make my own choices. But you've taken that from me."
Zhang Xian's face softened, and for the first time in what felt like an eternity, he stepped forward, reaching for her hand.
"I'm sorry," he said, his voice almost a whisper. "I thought I was protecting you, but I see now that I've hurt you. And that's the last thing I wanted to do."
Li An pulled her hand back instinctively, the gesture more out of habit than anger. She needed space, needed time to process everything he had just said. There was too much to unravel, too many emotions tangled up in her heart.
"I don't know if I can trust you," she said, her voice low. "How can I? You've kept so much from me. How do I know what's real and what isn't?"
Zhang Xian's face grew tight with frustration, but his eyes never left hers. "I understand," he said, his voice thick with emotion. "But I need you to know that everything I've done, I've done for you. I don't want to keep secrets anymore. I don't want to hide things from you."
Li An closed her eyes, swallowing the lump that had formed in her throat. She wanted to believe him. She really did. But the truth was a dangerous thing. It was an unstoppable force, and once she saw it, there would be no going back.
"What do you want from me?" she asked, the words feeling hollow in the air.
Zhang Xian sighed, his shoulders slumping as though a heavy burden had been placed upon them. "I want you to decide. Not for me, but for you. I want you to choose whether you can live with this truth. Whether you can live with me."
Li An felt her heart thudding in her chest. The decision before her seemed monumental, impossible. She didn't know if she could live with the darkness Zhang Xian had brought into her life, but one thing was clear: the choice was now hers to make.
The silence between them stretched on, and as she stood there, staring at the man she thought she knew, she realized that nothing would ever be the same again.
