Chapter 29 - First Impressions Amidst Dark Clouds
“………What..? What did you say…?”
“…………”
Uh, I’m screwed.
Leaning against the hard chair, I felt a sense of complete detachment as my true feelings slipped out. Hehe, it’s saintess time.
“Uh… Baraa-nim…?”
Unfortunately, I could still hear Chocoa’s voice through my headset.
“………Yes…”
“What did you say? The sound cut out, so I couldn’t hear well…”
Really? Did she really not hear me??
Hope surged in my mind, and I immediately straightened up. Come to think of it, such things did happen. When playing games with friends, there were times when Sooyoung would curse loudly after dying unfairly, but Discord would cut the sound, sparing my ears a few times.
“….Really…?”
“Baraa-nim! What were you shouting about so loudly!!! I caught ‘Sa,’ but that’s it..! Why are they drawing this out like it’s fun?”
Yoon Gae’s voice wasn’t cut off, and the sound of him arguing with the viewers could be heard crystal clear.
“What were you going to say after ‘Sa’?”
Chocoa asked curiously. But it didn’t seem like a good idea to tell the truth… I just stayed silent.
“……..Don’t want to say?”
“….I’m sorry……..”
“Hmm…. Oh well, if you ever want to tell me, let me know.”
“…..Yes..”
“Baraa-nim.”
“Yes?”
“But why did you lie to me?”
Me? I lied to Chocoa-nim?
I racked my brain, trying to find any mistakes in the things I’d said, but I couldn’t recall any. Chocoa asked again when I stayed silent.
“You said you were the eldest son on my stream.”
“Ah.”
“Why did you lie to me?”
“Uh.. ah… I… it wasn’t really… I wasn’t trying to… deceive you, it’s just that…”
“Pfft….. It’s okay. Let’s queue up now.”
“Yes~ Professor! Should we do unranked or quick match??”
“Hmm….. You said you’ve practiced, so let’s go unranked.”
“Okay, I’ll arrange the team comp.”
With Aroalo’s comment, the queue popped quickly. It looked like a full five-man queue.
“Haa……..”
I muted my mic, wiped my face, and let out a deep sigh. This wasn’t the usual conversation between viewers and streamers in chat; it was just broadcasters relaxing together.
In that case, all I could do was lead this game to victory. I didn’t have Yoon Gae’s ability to manage a stream well, or Chocoa’s skills in interacting with viewers, nor did I have ex-pro-level skills or Aroalo’s support abilities. All I could do was give it my best.
It’s been a while since I went all out in a game.
I muted my mic and started the game.
“………Which map do you want to play on?”
“,,,,,Hmm… I’m fine with any map, but… is there a specific one you want?”
“Café.”
It was my favorite map, and a really, really big one.
“Hmm… Café sounds good.”
“Do you like coffee…?”
Chocoa was probably referring to the map, but I asked just in case she meant a real café.
“I don’t particularly like it. But I do drink it often when doing assignments.”
I felt a bit happy learning something new about Chocoa and banned some decent operators. Of course, I didn’t ban Montagne, since Chocoa had practiced with him.
“We’re attacking first. Anything specific you want to play?”
“Uh… that… Gunner..? Sir?”
“Yes?”
“Can I try something I want to do?”
“Sure, it’s unranked anyway.”
“What are you going to play, Baraa-nim?!”
“……Kali.”
“Oh sh**~”
Kali, the operator with the only anti-material sniper rifle in Lesik. She had a 12x scope, incomparable to any other gun, along with a lower-magnification scope, and could shoot small explosives. However, her pick rate was abysmal. Unless you got a perfect shot, she’d deal only partial damage, and the bolt-action reload made her too slow to be practical. Only weirdos or those chasing a romantic ideal picked her.
“Isn’t that a sniper rifle?”
“Yes, it is.”
“Isn’t it hard?”
Even Chocoa, who was still new to Lesik, knew about its difficulty. But I didn’t mind.
“Are you going Montagne, Chocoa-nim?”
“Uh… yes.”
“Then… I’ll cover you, so could someone play hard breacher?”
“I’ll do the hard breaching.”
Aroalo, who had been quietly listening, took on the hard breacher role to balance out the team. Yoon Gae…
“Are you sure about that…?”
“I told you, it’s unranked anyway.”
“………Ha…. fine…”
Yoon Gae picked Glaz. While also a sniper, Glaz had a DMR rather than a bolt-action SR, and his ability to shoot through smoke and highlight enemies was great in theory but poorly executed in the game. He was used even less than Kali.
The game started, and I sent out a drone.
“……The bomb is on the third floor… Watch out for traps……”
“Ah, my drone’s destroyed.”
Chocoa’s drone was shot as we confirmed the bomb on the third floor. I wondered who had the audacity to destroy Chocoa’s drone, but if we killed everyone, they’d be among them. I calmed the tension in my fingers and finished droning.
“I’ll clear the first floor with Chocoa-nim and Aroalo. The rest of you head upstairs first.”
“……..”
The other teammates spawned at the main entrance to clear the first floor, but Yoon Gae and I spawned at the opposite side.
“Shall we go!!”
“Watch out for spawn kil—”
“Eeeeeek!!!!”
Gunfire came from a small broken barricade on the third-floor window. Aroalo, running with a pistol for faster movement, was shot and riddled with bullets by an enemy. As soon as I heard the gunshots, I rushed to the window and brought my large scope to my eye.
The shots came from the center of the third-floor windows. I quickly aimed up and fired at one, targeting the enemy’s head as they tried to retreat.
Bang!!
True to the anti-material rifle, a loud sound reverberated as the bullet flew.
“Got them.”
Though it wasn’t a headshot, they seemed to have died from being hit by the barricade and the body shot. Two kill logs popped up, indicating a 1:1 trade. I swiftly approached the building’s outer wall.
“Haa….. This is too much… Guys! Honestly, this is stream-sniping, right? How else could they have aimed at exactly where I was coming?!”
Grateful I had reduced my volume to 50%, I threw the rappel line to the rooftop and quickly scaled the building.
“……First floor, clear.”
Aroalo’s brief call reassured me that there were no threats below, so I rappelled faster, stopping just below the window from which the earlier shots had come.
“……….”
I heard a faint rustling sound from below. Maybe they planned a two-man spawn kill from the start, or they repositioned, anticipating my approach. But that didn’t matter now. I switched weapons.
From the giant anti-material rifle to a compact SMG.
Rat-a-tat-tat—
I strafed a little to the right, hugging the wall as I fired downward at the source of the sound. I was hit by a return shot, but the damage was negligible.
“…..Entered the third floor.”
“What? Not the roof?”
I could have safely sniped from the roof, but the team had already cleared the second floor and was about to reach the third. I didn’t know where the roamers were, but if we grouped up, they’d back off. My job was to clear out obstacles for Chocoa’s Montagne to breach safely. That meant traps, barbed wire, and enemies.
Kicking off the wall, I charged in, aiming downward.
Rat-a-tat-tat—
I shot down the bear trap that would have immediately downed anyone stepping on it, then quickly hugged the left wall.
I reloaded all my guns and listened closely to the surrounding sounds.
“……….”
At least, in this room, there was no one. The reinforced wall provided enough cover, making it difficult to get a clear angle on me. I deployed a small drone to scout for enemy positions.
“…..One near the red stairs… Two others in the bombsite.”
Behind the thick wall was an enemy—armed with a shotgun. If I approached first, I’d surely lose the fight.
“Chocoa-nim…? Could you come up the stairs with me?”
“Yes, I’m on my way.”
“Yoon Gae-nim, please watch my drone.”
The drone I had deployed earlier was positioned perfectly to monitor the two most likely entry points for the enemy to attack me. If anyone tried to sneak up, Yoon Gae would let me know. I heard the heavy clinking of Montagne’s shield as Chocoa approached. I crouched and pulled out my main gun.
Bang! Bang!
The enemy met Chocoa head-on at the stairs, resisting strongly. Expecting our other teammates to join the fight soon, the enemy retreated, only to find me waiting.
Bang!!!
I blew through the enemy’s head as they attempted to retreat to the bomb site.
“They’re behind us!! Behind!!”
“Got it.”
I rushed past the fallen enemy and regrouped with my teammates.
“You’re really good.”
“Heh… Th-thank you…”
I let out a stupid chuckle at Chocoa’s compliment, but I focused back on the game.
“We don’t even need to play.”
“He’s always like this.”
I heard some grumbling, but the sound of gunfire soon filled the air.
Chocoa, trying to block bullets with her shield, was too late.
“…………”
“Wow~ You’re on fire today! Especially when you rushed in during the first round and nailed that headshot, whew!!”
“Ahaha…..”
“Do you want to go pro? I know a coach.”
“Ah.. no… I’m not that good…”
“Come on… Well, should we queue up again?”
Four hours passed. We had six wins and two losses. Though others wanted to keep playing, both Chocoa and I seemed tired, so we all called it a night. Chocoa ended her stream after chatting for a few more minutes before signing off.
“Whew……”
I took off my headset and shut down my computer.
“….Hehehe….”
Feeling good about having played with Chocoa and even adding her as a friend, I lay down on my bed.
The next few days were going to be busy. I had to pack and move. But for now, I enjoyed this good mood, listening to the soft sound of rain, and drifted off to sleep.
Unaware of what might happen tomorrow.
