Chapter 39: 39. Promotion
"Where is it?" Garp asked.
"It's in the room."
"You go get it, I'll take it to Zephyr." Garp said, pulling his finger out of his nostril and flicking it.
To Marsh's surprise, the flicked object shot straight through the thick wall!
Marsh shook his head. "I'm sorry, Vice Admiral Garp, but Captain Gion specifically told me to personally deliver it to Admiral Zephyr."
"What? Are you worried I'll steal it?" Garp shot him a glance, and a powerful, indescribable aura surged toward Marsh.
The entire ship seemed to shudder, and Marlon, standing by the door, almost fell to the ground as everything before him blurred.
"Eat the king's salary, follow the king's orders."
Marsh gritted his teeth and thrust his sword into the deck, bracing himself to avoid being blown away by the intense pressure.
What shocked Marsh was that this wave of energy wasn't Conqueror Haki, but a murderous aura refined by Garp through years of battle!
Originally, Marsh had thought that with his current strength, he might not be able to defeat Garp, but he could at least hold his ground for a hundred moves.
Now, he realized that he wouldn't even last ten moves.
"Hahahaha!" Suddenly, Garp burst out laughing, and the overwhelming aura instantly disappeared. "I really don't know where Gion found such a gem. You're pretty impressive, kid."
Marsh let out a long breath, but his legs still wobbled, and he almost collapsed.
"Here."
Garp suddenly changed the subject and handed over a document.
Marsh froze for a moment before instinctively taking it and flipping it open.
It was a commission order!
"From today, 39th Branch Private First Class Marsh is hereby appointed as a Lieutenant Junior in the Navy Headquarters! This appointment is effective immediately!"
The document was signed by Fleet Admiral Sengoku!
The brief words left Marsh dumbfounded!
He had only just joined the Navy, and his rank was already nearing that of Gion?!
This wasn't the age of the Great Pirate Era, where the Navy was in need of a massive draft to recruit new soldiers!
"Why?" Marsh hesitated, frowning.
"I heard you took down that guy, Mossy, by yourself?" Garp began digging his nose again.
"Yes, but his bounty..." Marsh started, but was cut off.
"It has nothing to do with the bounty. I checked your personnel file from 39th Branch. You're the descendant of a Navy martyr?"
"Uh..." Marsh awkwardly scratched his head. How had his fabricated backstory spread so quickly to Garp?
"Your Rokushiki is quite impressive. Anyone who can teach you such skills must have a high position. Though I don't know who they were, given your lineage and abilities, what's wrong with giving you the rank of Lieutenant Junior?"
What a reasonable explanation! Marsh found himself speechless!
"I already called that girl. She went on a whole rant in the phone call, calling you scum! Hahahaha! You see, to keep you from leaving, she even used that kind of tactic!"
Garp burst into laughter, recalling Gion's impassioned assurances that Marsh was no good.
Marsh could only awkwardly laugh along.
"Once you pass the assessment, you'll follow me from now on."
"Follow you?" Marsh blinked, confused. Who could follow Garp?
Even the lowest ranks among his followers were Lieutenant Commanders! Even Kuzan became an Admiral after following Garp!
For a moment, Marsh forgot to ask what the assessment actually entailed.
"What? You think the assessment will be easy for you?" Garp shot him a glare.
"Ahem, so, Vise Admiral Garp, what is this assessment?"
"The Navy Headquarters Devil Training Camp. I'll give you six months. Within that time, you must complete all the tasks in the training camp! Only then can you come to me. If you fail, or exceed the six-month limit, you'll return to 39th Branch and beg that girl for milk!" Garp slammed his hand on the desk, speaking sternly.
Hearing this, Marsh narrowed his eyes.
This so-called Navy Headquarters Devil Training Camp was founded by Admiral Zephyr to train advanced personnel for the Navy!
The future Admirals Akainu, Kizaru, and others were all among the first batch of students from this camp!
Even later recruits like Kuzan and Gion came from this training camp!
Not only Zephyr, but Sengoku, Garp, and even Fleet Admiral Kong would occasionally visit the camp to teach!
As Akainu, Kizaru, and others established themselves in the Navy and became Vice Admirals, the training camp became the dream of every Navy soldier!
