Chapter 41: 41. Swim
Decay.
That was Marsh's first impression of Zephyr in the real world.
Zephyr's body was still tall, his muscles still packed with explosive strength.
But compared to Garp of the same age, Zephyr seemed like he had lost his soul!
He slouched in his chair, cheekbones protruding, cheeks sunken.
He was in his prime, yet his face was already deeply lined with wrinkles.
"Zephyr-sensei." Momonga softly called, snapping Zephyr out of his daze.
"Oh, Momonga." Zephyr came to himself and nodded at him.
"Sensei, Lieutenant Commander Gion sent something for you." Momonga glanced at Marsh.
Marsh immediately understood, took out the box, and announced loudly, "39th Branch Lieutenant Junior Grade Marsh under orders from Lieutenant Commander Gion, brings this item to you!"
"Gion, huh?" Zephyr showed a slight smile upon hearing the name.
It seemed he remembered Gion and Momonga's days in the training camp.
Then he took the box and opened it. Just as Marsh was about to peek inside, Zephyr suddenly snapped it shut!
"That girl Gion…" Zephyr shook his head, showing a bitter smile.
"Uh...Sensei, what did Gion send you?" Momonga curiously asked.
"A Devil Fruit. If I'm not mistaken, it should be Modo Modo no Mi," Zephyr sighed.
"Modo Modo no Mi?" Momonga and Marsh both frowned.
"Yes. Does she want me to go back to my youth?" Zephyr said with a hint of indifference.
A youthful, high-spirited teacher…
Momonga showed a slight smile, realizing that even though Gion was away from Headquarters, she still knew her teacher's situation well.
Meanwhile, Marsh thought, isn't the Modo Modo no Mi the one Ain ate later on?
So, the Modo Modo no Mi that Ain ate was originally a gift from Gion to Zephyr?
That means Ain is about to join the navy soon!
'Speaking of Ain... hmm, I kind of miss her.'
Slurp.
"You're called Marsh, right?" Zephyr suddenly looked at the tall, handsome young marine in front of him.
"Yes, sir!" Marsh immediately stood to attention and saluted.
"Not bad. From now on, you'll follow me, starting from lieutenant," Zephyr said, his appreciation for Marsh evident.
"Uh..." Marsh scratched his head in embarrassment.
Momonga sighed inwardly and stepped forward, saying, "Sensei, Marsh was originally Gion's subordinate. On his way to Headquarters, he saved a marine fleet and defeated a pirate with a bounty of 94 million Berries. He's already a Lieutenant Junior Grade here at Headquarters. I introduced him just now."
"Oh?" Zephyr paused, then burst out laughing. "Look at my memory!"
"Additionally, he's been designated by Vice Admiral Garp to enter your training camp." Momonga added.
"Alright." Zephyr nodded. "Perfect timing, the camp starts the day after tomorrow. Take a day to rest, and meet here then."
With that, he tossed a map over.
Marsh glanced at it and was surprised. "The Sabaody Archipelago?"
The Sabaody Archipelago, near Marineford, was formed around the roots of the world's largest mangrove.
However, many civilians lived there. Was the training camp really held in a place like that?
"One reminder, Lieutenant Marsh." Momonga suddenly said.
"Yes, please."
"Headquarters will not provide you with any ship to reach the training camp. You have to find a way yourself to get a boat to Sabaody Archipelago, as this is part of the pre-entry assessment."
Momonga thought back to when he fought the guards to steal a small boat, a memory that brought a smile to his face.
Marsh nodded in response.
"Alright, you two can leave now." Zephyr waved them off, returning to his spot on the couch, lost in thought again.
Seeing this, Momonga could only sigh, giving a salute before leaving.
Before the two left, Zephyr gave Marsh a deep look, feeling an inexplicable sense of familiarity with the young man he had never met before.
...
"Hah..." After leaving Zephyr's office, Marsh let out a long breath.
"What's the matter?" Momonga asked curiously.
"My first mission, and I managed to complete it successfully. I feel relieved." Marsh replied with a smile. Bathed in sunlight, his white uniform made him look dazzling.
Momonga shook his head with a smile. "You should think about how you're going to get to Sabaody Archipelago. If you can't even pass this first test, I'm afraid not even Vice Admiral Garp can help you."
"Simple!" Marsh replied confidently.
"Simple?" Momonga frowned. Did this kid think it was easy to steal or take a ship here at Marineford?
He clearly didn't know the difficulty of it!
"I'll just swim over!"
