Chapter 24: The Poor Girl
"Damon is in a bad mood again." Raymond whispered to Chester as they did pushups. It had been an hour and they all were looking at him with pleading gazes, but Damon looked lost.
Yet his cold and domineering aura seemed to control them and they kept working instinctively. Something told them they would die if they paused.
His presence was covered with dark clouds.
"I heard he got a gift from a maid. It was his portrait. Did he kill that poor girl?" another knight whispered, making Raymond paused and stared at the knight with disbelief.
"Are you for real?"
"Raymond! Stand up and spar with me." Raymond clenched and closed his eyes. Cursing his luck. Who had told him to be such a busy body!
"Ahh! That.. Sire, I injured my hands last night while practicing. I am not sure if I can spar today." he showed the bandages on his arm with a look of regret.
Damon's eyes narrowed.
"Do you think it would work? Opened the bandages so that I could see the severity of your wound. Only then I will decide!" the man wanted to cry, yet he nodded dutifully.
"Ah! Is that the princess!" The men paused at once and stared at the little child rolling on the ground. She had reached near the grounds, stumbling.
When she finally stopped, she looked aghast. Her face was pale as she looked left and right with a pale face.
Wanting to run, Abi stood up. But her feet were injured. Before she could even stand, she gasped with the pain and sat on the ground again.
Damon was stunned! This was their way to wait for him till he finished the training? Amazing! He watched with dark eyes how Olivia came running behind the girl looking worried.
As if she could not see any of them. She sat on the ground and took the young girl in her arms.
"Oh good lord! You are injured now." Olvia cried as she raised Abi's skirt to check her wounds.
"Let it go this once!" a cold voice paused Olivia at once. She shuddered with the rage in that voice and let go of Abi's skirt instinctively.
"Brother Damon!" Abi held Olbiia's skirt tightly. She was biting her lips to stop herself from crying.
She did not want to look weak in front of her brother.
"My lord, we apologize for our intrusion. It was not our intention to disturb you. The lady just fell."
"And without any slope, she rolled on the ground and stumbled right where we were practicing!" his voice was cold as he looked at them with a mocking smile.
Abi bit her lips harder and lowered her head. Even she did not know what happened. One moment she was walking carefully and then something slippery came under her feet and she stumbled. But instead of falling, she rolled on the ground as if someone pushed her.
But there was no one except Olivia. And Olivia would never harm her. How careless she was! No wonder no one likes her.
Olivia summoned all her courage and glared at the man.
"My lord, the lady slipped on an eel. She tried to hold it but she is just a child. Could you blame her?" Damon wanted to laugh at the tone of her justification.
He could feel the gaze of his men looking at him oddly. His eyes were so dark and he felt a stomach full of anger.
Could he blame the child? No! But he could blame the girl following her. She was a cunning woman.
"Forget it. She is injured."
"Yes, my lady. Ignore Sire, he had hit his head in the morning. Shall I escort you back to the palace?" Raymond came forward and bowed his head slightly in respect.
Olivia stared at the gentleman and then the crude man seething behind Raymond and sighed. If only, Damon would be this kind!
"Ah! We disturbed you incidentally. But Abi indeed has some business with my lord. If he had some time.." she hesitated but the way she pressed her hands and looked anxious could have won a nod from even the coldest man. Even if it was just to save their image in public.
Every knight was looking at Damon with accusatory glances. As if they would blame him for a lifetime if he refused the child. Abi had wrapped her arms around Olivia's shoulders. She looked nervous and anxious as she stared at her estranged brother pleadingly.
"I.."
"Of course, we all are here to serve the young lady. Can I hold her for you?" Raymond came forward as he felt Olivia was struggling to maintain her balance.
Even if Abi was skinny, she was tall for a five year old child. Olivia was slim herself, and she was holding Abi for a long time.
"Ah! Thank you." Olivia nodded but she waited for Abi to respond before passing her to Raymond.
"Take a step back." Damon's cold and lod voice echoed in the whole area and Abi flinched. She wrapped her arms around Olivia tightly and leaned on to her chest.
Oliva stumbled but a bit and Raymond glared at Damon.
"Sire, I am ready for the duel you were asking for." many nodded as if they wanted to challenge Damon too.
Damon gritted his teeth. He glared at Olivia for creating the scene.
"Forget it. If you are struggling to hold her, you can sit instead of standing. Or better, you can already leave. The child needs treatment." he said through gritted teeth. He could not take the crown of roses from the little child.
Looking at her innocent and sad face, he felt a strange rage in his chest. That girl is Oriana's daughter. The witch of his life. He had nothing to do with her family. They were his born enemies.
"But.. I want to give you a birthday present before leaving, brother Damon. It will only take one second."
