Chapter 16: A Friend in Need II
Zara's POV
"Don't worry, Jill, we just want to ask you a few questions, that's all," I say, my voice soft but firm as I gently pat her shoulder. "Do you remember anything else about where you were, or who took you?"
Jill's eyes shift nervously, her fear palpable in the air. She shakes her head slightly, a deep sense of guilt in her eyes. "I don't remember anything, Zara. I'm sorry." Her voice wavers, and I can see her fighting the urge to break down, her hands trembling at her sides.
"It's okay, it's okay," I reassure her softly. "Just try. Any little detail can be of use."
She hesitates for a long moment, her gaze drifting away from me then she closes her eyes as if searching her memories . Finally, her voice, though quiet, is steady. "Well, I remember something... but I don't think it will help much."
"What is it?" I ask eagerly, leaning closer.
"The guy who had us always wore this kind of badge with three lions," she says, her voice quiet but steady now. "One of them was wearing a crown. That's all I remember."
Mr. Wayne, who had been silent until now, suddenly speaks up. "Like this?" He shows her an emblem on his tablet screen.
Jill's eyes widen, and she nods quickly. "Yes, that's it!"
Bruce's eyes narrow with a grim determination. "That's the symbol of the Seryaklov Brothers Corporation. They're the founders of the largest human trafficking ring in the United States."
Damian's POV
The walk home is suffocating in its silence, each step feeling heavier than the last. Zara's lost in thought ahead of me, her posture rigid, her face tight with emotion. I feel the weight of the quiet settling in, making the air around us thick and uncomfortable.
Unable to stand it any longer, I break the silence, my voice more cutting than I intend. "Why do you even care about helping her?" The words feel harsh, but I can't quite understand her urgency. She barely knows the girl.
Zara slows her pace, turning to meet my gaze. Her eyes, as sharp and steady as ever, hold something I hadn't expected—an emotion I can't quite place. "Do I need a reason to want to help someone?" Her voice is calm, but there's an edge to it, a quiet strength.
"You haven't even known her for a week," I say, pressing further. "You're basically strangers."
Zara stops walking, and her blue eyes meet mine. For a moment, there's only raw emotion in them. "She reminds me of myself before I met you and everyone else," she says softly, her voice tinged with sadness. "Separated from my family, without anyone to rely on."
Her words hit me harder than I expected. "Well, thank goodness we found you," I say, instinctively brushing a hand against her cheek.
We stand there, looking at each other, the world outside of us slipping away as we find something in each other's eyes that speaks louder than words ever could.
